Chapter 2

Author: Bitter Lamb
He carried me to the bed, picked up a German book, and read it slowly.

As a translator, I needed to listen to German. Ever since our marriage, Michael had read these German journals to me every night before I went to sleep.

For five years, he had never once stopped.

I did not want to waste his time, so I told him, “I already have materials and videos for this. You work so hard every day. You do not need to read anymore.”

That night, he pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead and spoke to me tenderly.

“Evelyn, I’d rather do it for a lifetime.

“I want you to see me and to hear me every night before bed and every morning when you wake.”

For the past five years, he had always put my needs before his, no matter how minuscule. He handled everything himself. Even after years of marriage, he never steered close to any other woman. Even when out with friends, he never stepped into bars.

Michael was young, outstanding, and the richest man in Salt City. My mother-in-law had long wanted to push women at him when my belly showed no movement for years.

Each time, he refused. For my sake, he even fell out with his family.

During that time, his family struck back fiercely, trying to suppress him everywhere.

When I saw his haggard face, I begged him through tears more than once to separate.

But every time, he held me tight in his arms and said firmly, “We will not separate. Never. No matter what happens, we must stay together.”

I even once envied myself for having such a good partner like Michael.

The warmth beneath me was tender, and when I returned to my senses, I realized Michael had already carried me to the bed.

He tucked in the quilt for me and brushed my brow with his fingers.

I frowned and turned away from his hand.

“I’m sleepy. Stop moving.”

His hand froze in midair, then he lightly rubbed my head.

“Then go to sleep.”

The moon rose high. Beside me came steady breaths. I could not sleep, so I opened my eyes.

Michael’s familiar, steady presence wrapped around me. His large hand was locked firmly around my waist.

He was holding me in his sleep. That was real. However, his betrayal was also real.

The next day, Michael said he wanted to take me to a newly released movie.

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.

The butler stepped in. Through the gap in the door, I thought I saw the edge of a white skirt.

“Sir, someone is here for you.”

Michael frowned. He caught sight of the figure outside, and his voice carried a faint, unsteady panic.

“Didn’t I say I am not working today? Who would show up at my door?”

I squeezed his hand to calm him.

“Don’t get upset. Maybe it’s an urgent matter from the company.”

I glanced sideways at the figure outside the door.

It was Rachel.

I asked the butler to bring her in, but Michael stopped me first.

He saw my gaze, and his eyes flickered before he explained himself, “Evelyn, I just remembered the company does have a pressing issue. I may need to head back and deal with it. Don’t worry, I will be back very soon, and then we will go see the movie together, all right?”

Hearing that, I held back the agitation in my chest.

Michael's uncle's family was never qualified to compete with Michael for the heir’s position, yet over the past five years, Michael cared only about searching for me and had neglected the company. It left the patriarch of the Anderson family completely disappointed. They took advantage of the chance to curry favor with the old man and constantly demonstrated its ability within the company. But Michael was the heir the patriarch had devoted his life to raising. Even if disappointed, he could not completely abandon him. Michael's uncle's family was unwilling to let the opportunity slip, so they schemed to tarnish Michael’s standing in the patriarch’s eyes and went as far as to spread malicious slander. Michael had been urgently summoned back home because of their plotting. They accused him of cutting corners in a project, which had caused workers to die. The old man was upstanding and kind. He hated such things the most. Upon hearing it, he became so furious that he collapsed

He had long since lost the shine he once carried. His body was thin, and his face was scruffy with an unkempt beard. What was strange was how quickly I recognized him, and how quickly he recognized me. “Evelyn, Evelyn! I’ve finally found you. These five years weren’t in vain after all! “Let’s stop fighting, okay? Let’s stop and go home together, alright? “I know I wronged you before, but I’ve already driven Rachel away and made her pay the price, so please don’t be mad—” Before he could finish, Blue cut in. “Mommy, who’s this weird old man?” The childish voice rang out, and Michael’s eyes snapped to Blue. “Evelyn, y-you have a child?” His eyes went blank, and his words turned into stammers. I spoke aloofly. “Surprised? I suppose you are. After all, you fed me abortion drugs for five years. Of course, you’d be shocked to learn that I still had a child, wouldn’t you? “But we’re already separated. Whether I have a child, and with whom, has nothing to do with you.”

I never expected the cameras to make it so easy for me to keep an eye on what was happening at home. When he returned to the bedroom, he began searching frantically. “Where is everything? Why is everything gone? Where are all the things I gave Evelyn?! “My diary—where is my diary?!” Susan followed him inside. Hearing his words, she finally spoke with pity. “Mrs. Anderson cleared everything away a few days ago. Some she threw out, some she burned, and now nothing is left. She said that since she had decided to leave, she would leave completely. That meant removing all traces of herself by your side. “And she asked me to give you a message—that if she discovered that the love you gave her wasn’t unique, then she wouldn’t want you.” When Susan finished speaking, Michael’s trembling body froze stiff. Nobody knew how much time passed before he collapsed weakly to his knees. He stared blankly out the window, and silent tears fell. Susan stood beside him and sighed quietly.

After the plane landed, I went to a property my parents had left me. Sometime, my phone pinged with messages, and I discovered they were alerts from the home security cameras. After thinking for a moment, I opened the surveillance video. On the screen, Rachel sat on the sofa while gently rubbing her stomach. Sudden hurried footsteps sounded, and Michael rushed in. “Evelyn—I’m back! Did you miss me? Why didn’t you come out to see me? Are you mad that my business trip took too long?” I watched him frantically searching for me, and I smiled. He would never find me. Seeing Michael return, Rachel hurried forward to meet him. “Michael, you are back!” Michael’s pupils contracted sharply when he saw Rachel, and he gripped her arms at once. “How are you in my house? Where is Evelyn?” Rachel pouted aggrievedly. “Evelyn said she would give up her position to me! Who knows where she went…” Extreme panic flashed across Michael’s face. “E-Evelyn already knows?! Where di

I did not know how much time had passed when I started speaking again. I spoke in a slow, calm tone. “Don’t tell Michael about this. Not a single person is allowed to tell him.” When I returned home, Rachel was already waiting there. When she saw me, she swayed her hips and deliberately pushed her stomach out with a smug look on her face. “You knew about me a long time ago, Evelyn, didn’t you?” I silently studied her. Her eyes were bright. Her skin was pale, and her body was gracefully slender. We were nothing alike. After I learned of Rachel’s existence, I had someone investigate their relationship. They had known each other long ago, but Rachel’s humble background made his mother believe she was unworthy of Michael. After we married, at a banquet, Michael was maliciously drugged and mistook Rachel for me. The two of them had spent a night together. Afterwards, to take responsibility for Rachel, Michael hid her away in a villa on the outskirts of the city. That v

On the way home, the image of Michael tenderly supporting Rachel never left my mind. He treasured her. He treasured their child. The thought dragged me back to the years of marriage when I never once missed the medicine laced with abortion drugs. A wave of grief swallowed me whole. I stumbled back to the bedroom in a daze. I packed away everything connected to him and threw it all into the trash. I threw away the necklace he had spent a fortune to win for me, the collection of handbags he had gathered, and the silly little trinkets he had hunted down just to make me laugh. When the garbage truck carried everything away, my emotions finally eased up a little. No. There was still one thing. The moment I thought of it, I rushed to the bedroom and pulled a diary from the nightstand. It was a diary he had prepared for me after our marriage. Every page recorded fragments of me. The notebook was thick, and as soon as I opened it, the pages fanned open on their own. [Ev
