The drive back to the mansion felt nothing like the one before dinner.

The silence this time was sharp, uncomfortable—cutting deeper with every mile. Aaliyah stared out the window, her reflection faint against the glass, her thoughts spiraling around the words Ethan had dropped so casually.

A clause you’ve never seen.

“What does the clause say?” she asked again, her voice calm but strained.

Ethan tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “It was added by my legal team before the contract was finalized.”

“And you didn’t think I deserved to know?” she asked.

“I thought it wouldn’t matter,” he said quickly. “The contract was supposed to run its course. Clean. Simple.”

Aaliyah let out a short, bitter laugh. “Nothing about this has been simple.”

The car pulled into the driveway, but she didn’t move to get out. Neither did he.

“The clause states that if either party terminates the marriage before the agreed period,” Ethan said slowly, “there’s a penalty.”

Her chest tightened. “Financial?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

He hesitated.

“Ethan,” she warned.

“Enough to ruin you,” he said quietly. “And damage my company.”

The words landed like a slap.

“So I was trapped,” she whispered. “From the beginning.”

“No,” he said sharply. “You were protected.”

She turned to him, eyes blazing. “Protected by you deciding what I could handle?”

“I didn’t want you to feel pressured to stay.”

“But I was,” she said. “Every moment I thought about leaving, every time I told myself to endure—there was a reason, wasn’t there?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

“That’s why you were never worried about me walking away,” she continued. “Because I couldn’t afford to.”

“That’s not true anymore,” he said urgently. “If you want out now, I’ll take the hit.”

She shook her head. “That’s not the point.”

They finally stepped out of the car, tension clinging to them like fog as they entered the mansion.

“I trusted you,” Aaliyah said softly. “Even when you shut me out. Even when you made me feel small. I trusted that at least the rules were honest.”

Ethan’s voice cracked. “I was wrong.”

“Yes,” she said. “You were.”

She turned to leave, but he caught her wrist gently.

“Please,” he said. “Don’t shut me out now.”

She pulled her hand free. “I need to know something.”

“Anything.”

“Did you start caring for me because you wanted to… or because it became easier than losing everything?”

The question stunned him.

“That’s not fair,” he said.

“No,” she replied. “It’s honest.”

He stepped closer, his voice raw. “I care for you because you changed me. Because you stood your ground when I didn’t deserve it. Because losing you terrifies me in ways money never could.”

Tears welled in her eyes—but she didn’t let them fall.

“Then why do I feel like your feelings came with conditions?” she asked.

He had no answer.

Aaliyah took a step back. “I need space.”

“Just tonight?” he asked.

She shook her head. “I don’t know.”

The word shattered something inside him.

She walked upstairs, leaving him standing in the hall alone.

From the shadows near the staircase, Amara watched quietly, her lips curling into a slow smile.

Perfect, she thought.

The fracture had begun.

Inside her room, Aaliyah locked the door and sank onto the bed, pressing her hands to her face. Her heart ached—not just from betrayal, but from the cruel truth that she still cared.

Downstairs, Ethan poured himself a drink he didn’t touch.

He stared at the contract folder on his desk, its weight heavier than ever before.

For the first time, he understood something painfully clear.
