Chapter 20: The Kiss That Changed Everything

The mansion was unusually quiet that night.

The echoes of their footsteps faded as Ethan and Aaliyah walked through the hallway, neither speaking, both painfully aware of how close they were—closer than they had ever been since the day they signed that contract.

At the door to her room, Aaliyah stopped.

“This is me,” she said softly, her hand resting on the door handle.

Ethan nodded, though something in his chest twisted at the thought of walking away. “Good night, Aaliyah.”

She turned to face him, searching his expression. “Good night.”

She opened the door—but didn’t step inside.

Instead, she hesitated, then turned back to him. “Ethan… about what you said in the car.”

“Yes?” His voice was low.

“I need honesty,” she said. “Not just tonight. Not just when you’re afraid of losing me.”

He stepped closer, closing the small distance between them. “Then ask me anything.”

Her breath hitched.

“Do you want me?” she asked quietly. “Not as your wife on paper. Not as a responsibility. But as a woman.”

The question stunned him.

Ethan had faced hostile boardrooms and ruthless competitors without flinching—but this? This terrified him.

“Yes,” he said without hesitation. “I’ve wanted you for longer than I was willing to admit.”

Her eyes shimmered. “Then why does it still feel like you’re holding back?”

Because if I let go, I might fall too hard, he thought.

But he didn’t say that.

Instead, he lifted his hand, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. His touch was tentative, reverent.

“I don’t know how to do this slowly,” he admitted. “Or safely.”

She let out a shaky laugh. “Neither do I.”

Their gazes locked. The air between them felt charged, electric.

Aaliyah’s heart raced as Ethan leaned closer, his forehead resting against hers. She could feel his breath, warm and unsteady.

“If you want me to stop,” he murmured, “say the word.”

She didn’t.

Instead, she closed the distance.

The kiss was soft at first—hesitant, almost unsure—like two people afraid the moment might disappear if they moved too fast. But when Aaliyah’s fingers curled into his shirt, something in Ethan snapped.

The kiss deepened.

It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t desperate. It was aching and tender, filled with everything they hadn’t said.

Ethan cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek as if memorizing her. Aaliyah leaned into him, her walls crumbling one by one.

For the first time, she felt chosen.

When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless.

“This changes things,” Aaliyah whispered.

“Yes,” he said. “It does.”

Fear flickered in her eyes. “Are you going to regret this tomorrow?”

He shook his head. “I already regret every moment I pretended I didn’t feel this.”

She swallowed hard. “Then don’t run.”

“I won’t,” he promised again. “Even if this scares me.”

She smiled sadly. “It scares me too.”

Ethan stepped back slightly, forcing himself to create space. “We should stop,” he said, voice tight. “Before we rush into something we don’t understand.”

Aaliyah nodded, though disappointment flickered across her face. “Thank you… for not treating this like a conquest.”

“You’re not something to conquer,” he said firmly. “You’re someone I want to protect.”

Those words settled deep in her heart.

She stepped into her room and turned back to him one last time. “Good night, Ethan.”

“Good night,” he replied.

As the door closed softly behind her, Ethan stood there longer than he should have.

Inside her room, Aaliyah leaned against the door, her hand pressed to her lips, her heart pounding wildly.

That kiss wasn’t just a mistake.

It was a beginning.

And neither of them could pretend otherwise anymore.

Clean. Simple.”Aaliyah let out a short, bitter laugh. “Nothing about this has been simple.”The car pulled into the driveway, but she didn’t move to get out. Neither did he.“The clause states that if either party terminates the marriage before the agreed period,” Ethan said slowly, “there’s a
