Rain lashed against the windshield as Isla’s car cut through the midnight streets. The city lights bled through the glass, distorted by tears she refused to wipe away.

Her fingers clenched around the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. Every image replayed in her mind, Axton’s stillness, the woman’s mocking smile, the mask, the mirror image of her own face.

Her chest hurt so much it felt like breathing was a punishment.

She had loved him. Despite knowing the marriage was a contract, she had believed he’d chosen her.

But he hadn’t.

He’d chosen a ghost she could never compete with.

By the time the car stopped at a red light, Isla’s vision had blurred completely. She couldn’t go home, not to the apartment that still smelled like him or to the shared bed that suddenly felt like a lie.

“Keep driving,” she told the driver hoarsely. “Anywhere.”

Minutes passed. The rain grew heavier, smearing the world into colors of neon and silver. When the car slowed again, she looked up through swollen eyes and saw the glowing signboard ahead:

HAVEN’S HOLLOW.

A notorious bar. The kind her father used to warn her about. It was crowded and loud, the kind of place people went to forget their lives.

“Here,” Isla whispered. “Stop here.”

Before the driver could respond, she pushed the door open and stepped into the rain. Water plastered her hair against her face, soaked through her silk blouse, but she didn’t care.

Inside, the bar was dim and warm, thick with the scent of whiskey and perfume. Music pulsed softly in the background. People laughed, flirted, lived, oblivious to her world collapsing.

She slid onto a stool at the counter. “Vodka,” she said, her voice low.

The bartender hesitated, she looked too polished, and too fragile to belong there, but he poured it anyway.

The first glass burned.

The second numbed.

By the third, she could almost convince herself that the ache in her chest wasn’t real.

She stared at her reflection in the bar mirror, and a laugh came out broken, halfway between sob and hysteria. She downed another glass, the sound of her emptying it drowned by the chatter around her.

When she turned, she collided with someone.

Her glass slipped, shattered on the floor.

“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, but the stranger caught her wrist before she could bend down.

“It’s fine,” he said. His voice was calm, deep, and laced with something steady, the opposite of everything she was.

She looked up. His eyes were dark, unreadable, framed by lashes too long for a man. He wasn’t smiling, but there was a faint concern in his expression.

“You shouldn’t drink any more,” he said.

“Who are you, my conscience?” Isla slurred, tugging her hand free.

“No. Just someone who doesn’t want to watch you fall apart in public.”

She laughed bitterly. “Too late for that.”

He sighed, glancing at the bartender. “How much did she have?”

“Three. Maybe four,” the bartender replied quietly.

The stranger turned back to her. “Care to tell me what's wrong?”

“I don’t need your help or sympathy,” she snapped, standing or atleast trying to. The room swayed violently, and she stumbled. His hand shot out, steadying her by the arm.

“Easy,” he said.

She glared at him through watery eyes. “Don't touch me!!!”

“I'm sorry.” He quickly apologized.

The gentleness in his tone made her throat tighten, and she loosened up. “Why do you even care?” she asked bitterly. “You don’t even know me.”

“I don’t have to,” he said softly. “You just look like someone who’s lost everything tonight.”

Something inside her cracked and before she could stop herself, the words poured out. She told him everything. Axton, the affair, the contract, the humiliation and even the doppelgänger.

He listened without interrupting, his expression unreadable, his silence more comforting than pity. When she finished, she found herself laughing.

They talked. They even laughed once or twice. Then, as the bar lights dimmed and her voice slurred, he leaned closer, his breath warm against her temple.

“So,” he asked quietly, “what do you plan to do now?”

Her head spun. The intensity in his eyes and the alcohol in her veins blurred her judgment.

Instead of answering, she reached out, fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “I just want to have... fun tonight,” she murmured.

He caught her wrist before she could say more. “I think you should rest,” he said.

But Isla swayed forward. Her lips parted as if to argue and then her expression changed.

Her stomach twisted violently. She clutched her mouth, but it was too late.

The stranger froze as warm liquid hit his shirt, the shock of it stealing his breath.

The bartender gasped. Isla stumbled back, mortified, tears welling in her eyes. “I—I didn’t mean to—”

“Don’t,” he said quickly, his voice firm but not unkind. “It’s fine.”

She looked horrified. “No, it’s not. I ruined your—”

He took her by the shoulders, steady but gentle. “It’s fine, hun. Let’s get you out of here.”

He turned to his driver, who appeared instantly at the door. “Prepare the car,” he ordered.

As the man disappeared into the rain, Isla’s body went limp. The fight, the shame, the alcohol all hit her at once. She slumped forward, gripping his shirt weakly.

“Don’t leave me…” she whispered.

His chest tightened unexpectedly. “I won’t,” he said quietly.

When he looked down again, her eyes were already closed, her breathing shallow but calm.

For a moment, he just stood there, half-exasperated, half intrigued. Then, with a quiet sigh, he shifted his hold and lifted her into his arms.

“Who are you?” he murmured under his breath as the rain hit his shoulders.

But she didn’t answer.

She had already fallen asleep against him.

The restaurant was exactly the kind of place his mother preferred; exclusive, elegant, and designed to impress. Crystal chandeliers cast soft light over white tablecloths, and a string quartet played Vivaldi in the corner. The private dining room overlooked the city, floor-to-ceiling windows offering a view that cost more per square foot than most people earned in a year.Dylan arrived at 6:55 PM, precisely on time. His mother was already there, resplendent in a navy Chanel suit, her silver hair swept into an immaculate chignon. She looked up from her wine glass as he entered, her sharp eyes assessing him instantly.“You look tired,” she observed.“Good evening to you too, Mother.” Dylan kissed her cheek and took the seat beside her. “I’m fine.”“You’re never fine when you say you’re fine,” she repeated her words from yesterday, but this time with a hint of genuine concern. “Is it the Nakamura deal? I heard they’re being difficult about the merger terms.”“The deal is progressin

The Frost Holdings building was nearly empty when they arrived. Dylan took the private elevator to his floor, the silence oppressive after the chaos in his head. His office felt different now. Every surface Isla had touched, the desk where she left his morning coffee, the chair she sat in during briefings, the window where she’d stood on her first day all of it carried new weight.Dylan sank into his chair, pulling up his email. True to her word, Evelyn had sent the candidate profiles.Vivienne Sinclair - Heiress, philanthropist, graduated summa cum laude from Wellesley.Charlotte Beaumont - CEO of her family’s hotel chain, featured in Forbes 30 Under 30.Anastasia Volkov - International relations expert, speaks six languages. They were impressive women, all of them. Beautiful, accomplished, exactly what his mother would consider “suitable.”But unfortunately, none of them were Isla.Dylan’s finger hovered over the delete button, but he stopped himself. This wasn’t about what

The words hit him like a physical blow.Dylan stumbled back from the door, his pulse roaring in his ears. He made it to the stairwell before his composure cracked, bracing himself against the cold concrete wall. His mind spun, trying to grasp the implications. The timeline matched, but…He pulled out his phone with trembling hands, scrolling through his calendar. The night he’d gone to that bar after a frustrating negotiation. The woman with tears streaming down her face.It couldn’t be.But even as he tried to deny it, certainty settled in his chest like lead. He’d noticed the torn condom afterward, cursed himself for being careless, planned to tell her in the morning. But she’d vanished before dawn, leaving nothing but a note and the faint scent of her perfume on his sheets. He’d told himself it would be fine. That the chances were slim. He thought she was smart enough to use a pill in the morning. What was I thinking?Dylan’s fist clenched against the wall. He’d been careful his

The silence stretched between them like a tightrope.Dylan’s jaw tightened as he watched her stand there, polite and professional, not a flicker of recognition in those warm brown eyes. The same eyes that had been filled with tears six weeks ago. The same eyes that had looked at him with desperate need before she’d whispered another man’s name. And now she looked at him like a stranger.“Mr. Frost?” Isla shifted slightly, unnerved by his intense stare. “Is everything alright?”He blinked, forcing himself back to the present. “Fine.” His voice came out rougher than intended. He cleared his throat and moved behind his desk, putting distance between them. “Evelyn should have briefed you on your duties.”“She did.” Isla clutched her tablet against her chest. “I’m to manage your schedule, handle correspondence, screen calls, and prepare materials for meetings. I’ve already organized your calendar for the next two weeks and flagged the urgent items that need your attention.”“Good.” He pul

The elevator chimed.Dylan Frost adjusted the cuff of his charcoal suit, his expression unreadable as he stepped into the executive floor of Frost Holdings. New York air always carried too much noise, but inside his company, silence was a rule. His personal assistant, Evelyn, trailed beside him with her tablet, her heels clicking softly in rhythm with his steps. “Sir, about the internal screening…”He didn’t look at her. “Proceed.”Evelyn nodded quickly. “Your mother approved the idea of a private selection. Six candidates have been shortlisted, all with verified backgrounds, strong social standings, and no prior scandals. I’ve organized their profiles in your system.”Dylan’s jaw flexed. The entire ordeal was absurd, a “selection” to find a wife, orchestrated under the guise of corporate image and family legacy. But his mother had made it clear: his father’s will wasn’t negotiable. Marry before his half-brother’s wedding, or lose Frost Holdings to someone who didn’t deserve to inh

The sound of his phone shattered the silence.Dylan blinked, pulling himself from the spiral of thoughts that had haunted him since dawn. The bed beside him was empty, the faint dent on the pillow already fading, as if she’d never been there at all.He rubbed a hand over his face before answering. “Yes, Claire?”“Sir, Mrs. Frost has called the office three times this morning. She’s… not exactly pleased you’ve been in New York for four days without stopping by.”He exhaled, tipping his head back. “Of course she’s not.”“She’s expecting you today. Preferably before lunch.”“Understood.” He ended the call and sat for a long moment, staring at the city sprawled beneath his window. He dressed in silence, sliding back into the armor of his usual composure, then headed for the Frost estate hoping she'd used postpill like every other lady. The mansion loomed like a relic of another century, white stone, tall windows, and the faint scent of roses trailing through the iron gates.
