Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
Sylvia's words shocked the onlookers, and it caused an uproar in the crowd.

"I can't believe how cold-blooded this guy is. If not for that officer, his wife and unborn child would both be dead already. He doesn't want to be bogged down with a debt of gratitude. So, he wants his own wife to walk away with nothing!"

"And it seems he's a lawyer! Who would dare hire a heartless lawyer like him?"

"Exactly. He even hit his wife out of anger. This poor woman sure is unfortunate to have married a man like him."

Before I could speak, Sylvia placed both hands on her knees and slowly knelt down.

She looked up at me with pleading eyes and begged, "Zach, Raven saved my life! What's wrong with giving her and her family some money? Besides, I only want my half of our assets."

As her voice grew louder, her emotions spiraled out of control.

I let out a cold laugh and instructed Harlan, "Listen, go to the hospital and contact Raven's husband. Persuade him and let him know that if he wants to divorce his vegetative wife, I'm confident I can transfer all his debts to her. I'll even represent him for free."

Harlan froze. The onlookers all stared at me, wide-eyed.

Sylvia looked up at me in disbelief. Her eyes were filled with anger and disappointment.

Everyone present clenched their teeth and glared at me, as though I were some unforgivable sinner.

Sylvia suddenly shot to her feet and grabbed the lapels of my suit jacket.

"Zachary! Even if Raven is in a coma now, she saved me and our child! How can you do this?" she cried out.

I responded, "I'm making use of her final value! Who would dare ask a patient in a vegetative state to pay her debts? This lawsuit will be unprecedented. I'm destined to leave my mark on legal history!"

"You disgust me, Zachary. You aren't the man you used to be. You used to respect my wishes and listen to me!" Sylvia said.

Upon hearing that, I looked at her intently.

What she said was true. Previously, I had obeyed her every word. Everyone in our neighborhood knew I was a henpecked husband.

But now, all I wanted was fame.

"I'm a lawyer. This case will bring me both fame and fortune. Why would I give up this golden opportunity? I'm not a fool," I said.

Then, I glanced at Harlan, who was still standing to one side with a dazed expression.

"Don't just stand there. Go on!" I urged.

Harlan snapped out of it and nodded frantically. He walked over to the car.

Seeing how ruthless I had become, Sylvia trembled with fury. She was usually gentle and demure. But now, she suddenly jumped up and blocked Harlan with frigteningly bloodshot eyes.

She screamed, "Zachary! She's the neighbor you see day in and day out. She's your friend and also the one who saved your wife! She's in a vegetative state now, so her treatment will cost a fortune. What do you expect her family to do?

"Or are you just that reluctant to pay her even a single cent?"

I looked straight at her with my arms crossed and sneered. "Her husband will handle her affairs. He's the one who should support her elderly mother. Which law states that the person who was saved has the obligation to support their savior's family?"

Sylvia countered, "But out of basic humanity, shouldn't you at least give something?"

Her expression remained desperate and pleading, but every word she spoke was intended to guilt-trip me.

Then, she gave me her final ultimatum. "I'll ask you one last time. Will you give me the money or not?"

I didn't hesitate for a moment as I shouted, "None of this is my damn business!"

Half a year ago, I suddenly vomited blood and fainted while working. I was rushed to the hospital. When I woke up, the doctor told me something shocking. A very small amount of poison had been detected in my blood. It was a slow-acting toxin that was colorless and tasteless but extremely damaging to the liver.Since the liver was a silent organ that took damage without giving out warning signs, the condition would often be in the middle or late stages once the pain became noticeable.Fortunately, they had caught my poisoning early. Even so, I still needed long-term monitoring.Later, I received a call from an overseas insurance company. That was when I learned Sylvia had purchased a massive life insurance policy with me as the insured. In that instant, everything became clear—she had been planning to kill me to cash in on the policy. From that moment on, I began quietly investigating, gathering evidence, and waiting for the right moment to expose her. Finally, in the hospital co

"Do you think Zachary and Raven will find out? He's a top lawyer, and she's a police officer. If they catch us, we're finished," Malcolm said.Sylvia replied, "They won't. Zachary is a boring workaholic who only cares about his job. And Raven? She's the careless type. As long as we're careful, we can fool her easily.""You're brilliant," Malcolm praised her appreciatively. Then, the two of them started kissing."Be gentle, I'm still pregnant. Don't hurt the baby," Sylvia reminded.Malcolm said lustfully, "Relax, I'll be careful. Two days without you has been torture."The video ended. The influencers and reporters all stared at Sylvia and Malcolm with disgust.Sylvia panicked and screamed, "This isn't hotel surveillance! It proves nothing!"She glared at me and added, "Are you done, Zachary? I'm your wife! You edited these videos and played them publicly. What are you trying to do?"I replied calmly, "When did I ever say it was hotel surveillance?"Malcolm froze, stumbling ba

"Sue me?" Sylvia echoed in confusion. The whole room fell silent, waiting for the truth to unravel.I opened the envelope and pulled out the documents inside.Calmly, I said, "We found a key eyewitness at the scene. Someone had seen you repeatedly pressing Officer Weber underwater. The tech team at the police station analyzed the witness' footage frame by frame and concluded that you, Sylvia Small, committed acts of premeditated murder."We have an eyewitness, a testimony, and a video. Now, the victim herself is accusing you of attempted murder. What else do you have to say?"The reporters and influencers swarmed Sylvia instantly.A reporter shoved a microphone toward her and asked, "Sylvia, is what Mr. Lawton said true?"An influencer thrust a phone at her face and pressed, "Officer Weber risked her life to save you. Why did you try to kill the one who saved you?"Sylvia snapped and screamed hysterically, "I didn't kill anyone!"She flailed wildly to force the reporters and

Sylvia began crying pitifully. She claimed she had panicked and cramped up at the time. She even swore on the child in her belly that she was innocent. Then, she demanded to know why no one had exposed the video earlier if it had been true. Her words swayed the crowd's opinion. The influencers accused me of maliciously framing an innocent person and almost getting away with it.I looked at this brainless herd. It seemed that as long as someone acted weak, they were automatically the ones who were innocent."You're so good at twisting things around. I've already called the police. The officers will verify whether the video is real. Just wait," I said with a scoff.Suddenly, Sylvia snapped. She grabbed the laptop and hurled it to the floor. Then, she stomped on it twice. She yelled that this circus should end now. In the same breath, she said I should go to jail for wasting the public's precious time and resources.A police officer received a call and came over. He wanted to cuff me

I shot a look at Harlan. He froze for a second and nodded. He understood that I wanted him to bring the evidence I had told him to collect. The moment the reporters and influencers heard me say I had evidence, they swarmed forward like wolves that smelled meat. Their eyes were gleaming as they thrusted their phones and cameras closer in my direction.Sylvia and Malcolm exchanged a panicked glance. Then, gritting her teeth, Sylvia shoved aside the cameras blocking her way and marched up to me. She slapped me hard. She scolded, "Have you gone nuts? How can you still try to frame me? I regret not realizing how vicious and scheming you were earlier!"I slapped her back just as hard and spat, "I should be the one saying those words to you. You're the wolf wearing sheep's skin."Olga's eyes reddened as she looked at me anxiously. "What is going on, Zachary? You say you have evidence. Show it, then!"The crowd joined in, shouting for me to bring the evidence out."Mrs. Weber, everyone,

Sylvia's previously relieved expression instantly tensed with suspicion when she heard what I said. She fumed, "What nonsense are you spouting now? I already signed the divorce agreement. You were the one who didn't want the child. What trick are you trying to pull now?"Suddenly, Malcolm burst into tears and followed up with his own accusations against me.He wailed, "Zachary, the heavens are watching! Raven saved your family, but hers is on the brink of falling apart. Do you want all of us to die before you grow a conscience?"I frowned slightly. Seeing that I didn't respond, Malcolm gritted his teeth and stood up. He made a show of wanting to slam his head against the wall, only for Sylvia to stop him.The livestream's viewer count skyrocketed. The comments section overflowed with people swearing they wanted to find me and kill me. They accused me of playing with people's lives again and again.I responded calmly, "I will transfer the money, but only to Raven's mother, Mrs. We
