Chapter 2

Author: Helper
When I said that, Nathan instinctively turned around and looked toward the operating room behind him. He was about to walk inside when Layla suddenly grabbed his arm.

"Mr. Carter, you're Ms. Smith's husband, after all. Since she wants you to sign for her, you should just do it. At the end of the day, Ms. Smith probably just wants you to pay more attention to her."

Hearing Layla's words, Nathan stopped. Then he turned back and gave me a knowing smile.

My eyes followed his every move.

The next second, Nathan picked up the document and brought it in front of him. If he had just looked a little more carefully, he would have noticed whose name was written on it.

Unfortunately, all of his attention was focused on Layla, who was still crying beside him.

He didn't even spare the paper a proper glance. Without reading it, he signed his name directly on it.

I was still standing there in a daze when Nathan let out a quiet sigh.

"She's already gone. Don't be too upset. At least I'm still here with you, aren't I?"

His words almost made me laugh. He said it like I was desperate to have him by my side.

I didn't respond. I simply turned around and walked away.

Natalie had treated me well when she was alive. Now that she had died in such a tragic way, I wanted to make sure she could be laid to rest as soon as possible.

Just as I was about to make arrangements for her body, I unexpectedly ran into Nathan and Layla again.

For some reason, Nathan looked a little guilty. He cleared his throat before finally explaining why he had come to find me.

"Olivia, Layla feels incredibly guilty about your mother's death. She wants to do something for your mother one last time."

I looked at him and waited for him to continue.

"Layla's school's anatomy lab happens to need a body specimen for her senior students to conduct experiments. She means well. She just wants to do everything she can to give your mother some value after her passing. The body will be taken away soon. Olivia, go say goodbye to your mother."

For a moment, I thought I had misheard him.

Seeing that I was still frozen in shock, Layla stood there with red-rimmed eyes and spoke softly.

"Ms. Smith, Mr. Carter told me that your mother was always a kind person when she was alive. Now that she passed away because of me, I want to do whatever I can to let her continue doing good even after death.

"Donating her body to science and contributing to society is a good thing. I believe your mother would have agreed if she were still alive. It's better to make use of her body than to let it decay and go to waste. Ms. Smith, is that okay?"

Her words hit me so hard that I couldn't think straight.

However, I finally came back to my senses.

"No. Absolutely not. I will never agree to this."

People from the older generation cared deeply about being laid to rest after death. Donating a body for experiments was something Natalie would never have wanted.

Seeing how firm I was, both of them froze.

Nathan looked at me helplessly and spoke in a gentle voice.

"Olivia, stop being difficult. Your mother's death has become a burden on Layla's heart. She finally came up with a way to make things right. If you refuse, she'll carry this guilt for the rest of her life. Do you really want that?"

As he spoke, he took out a credit card and placed it in front of me.

"Freezing your bank accounts was my mistake. You're still the lady of the Carter family, after all. There's one million dollars in this card. As long as you agree to donate your mother's body, the money is yours. Be reasonable, okay?"

I picked up the card and smiled.

"Of course."

A week earlier, I ran into Nathan again outside my office.Three years in prison had completely changed him.The confidence and arrogance he once carried were gone. He looked worn out, like someone who had lost all hope. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my hand."Olivia, how could you be so cruel? Do you know how devastated I was when I found out in prison that you divorced me? I thought the punishment I received was enough to make you forgive me. I never imagined that even after everything, you still wouldn't let go."Olivia, these past three years, I thought about you every single day. What happened back then was my fault. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. I promise I'll treat you well from now on. Please give me another chance."I coldly pulled my hand away and crushed the hope in his eyes."No way. Leave, and don't come looking for me again. As far as I know, Layla was released from prison a few days ago too. Didn't you care a lot about her? As for the f

Nathan froze again. He stared at the papers in my hand in disbelief. His jaw tightened as he spoke through clenched teeth."You want a divorce? Olivia, you actually want to divorce me?"As he spoke, he stumbled toward me.After what he had just done with the knife, I was terrified. I immediately backed away several steps and warned him, "Don't even think about doing anything stupid! The police will be here soon!"A flash of hurt crossed Nathan's eyes. He looked shocked as he stared at me, tears silently falling down his face. "You think... I would hurt you?"I sneered. "You're insane. The problem with someone like you is that even you don't know what you're capable of doing. I think it's better if I stay as far away from you as possible."Hearing that, Nathan lowered his voice. "I would never hurt you. You're my wife. I could never bring myself to hurt you."I immediately threw the divorce agreement at him."Not for much longer. Nathan, how do you even have the nerve to sa

Layla couldn't take it anymore. She collapsed to the floor, crying."I didn't... It wasn't me! I didn't kill your mother!""You did it because you're cruel. You didn't tell him the one who fell was his mother, so you deliberately stopped Nathan from giving me the money. "You've loved Nathan for a long time, and you've hated me just as long. You used every opportunity you had to make my life miserable. "You even insisted on donating my 'mother's' body for dissection. You made it sound so noble, saying it was for science and for society. But in reality, you let people cut up her body just to satisfy your own resentment."And even that wasn't enough for you. You came up with the disgusting idea of scattering her ashes in the river. "Layla, you've hidden all your cruelty behind the excuse of being frugal. After everything you've done, what exactly are you crying about? Why make it seem like people were unfair to you?"With every word I spoke, the color drained from Layla's face.

Seeing that, I immediately stepped in front of my mother and slapped Nathan across the face."Even if you were the one who died, my mother still wouldn't be the one suffering. So tell me, do you finally know who died now?"Nathan's eyes were bloodshot as he glared at me. Then, he finally broke down and started to shout."Olivia! Why didn't you tell me sooner that Mom was in trouble? What were you trying to do? What the hell were you trying to do?"I ignored his anger and replied calmly to him."I was trying to. When your mother was in danger, wasn't I the first person who called you? You were too busy flirting with your mistress. You didn't even answer the phone. And you refused to send the money for her surgery. That's why her treatment was delayed. And you still have the nerve to ask what my intentions were? I want to ask what your intentions were."When I tried to stop you from donating your mother's body, you ignored me completely. You said you were afraid Layla would feel gu

This time, Nathan was the one who was left speechless. His eyes widened, and his entire body went stiff. It took him a long moment before he finally found his voice."Dad... What are you talking about? How could something have happened to Mom? The person who died on the operating table was obviously..."Before he could finish, the person on the other end cut him off harshly."Shut up, you ungrateful son! Bring your mother's ashes home right now! Your relatives and friends are already here!"Before Nathan could say another word, the call was disconnected.Nathan stood there frozen. His entire body trembled, and his eyes were filled with confusion and disbelief, as if his soul had left him.I had lived with him for so many years, but I had never seen such a complicated expression on his face before.Seeing this, Layla quickly stepped forward and held his arm."Mr. Carter! Please calm down. Don't get too worked up. Your father must have misunderstood something. When we were at th

Nathan didn't reply. The next morning, he finally called me. The moment I answered, I could hear the anger he was trying to suppress in his voice."Olivia, what did you mean by that message you sent? Mom's perfectly fine at home! Why would you curse her like that? She has treated you so well all these years. How can you be so heartless?""How do you know she's fine at home?" I immediately asked. "What, did you go back and check on her?"There was a brief silence on the other end. Then Nathan scoffed."Layla had a fever last night. I stayed at the hospital to take care of her. Anyway, Mom would never be in trouble. If you keep saying ridiculous things, I'll lose my patience with you!"Before I could say another word, he hung up.I sat there holding my phone, completely stunned.A moment later, Nathan sent me another message.[I've already had your mother's body sent to the crematorium. When you have time, go pick up her ashes.]-When I walked out of the crematorium holding
