Sophia Rossi looked down at me, her eyes filled with contempt.

“Who gave you permission to use the Don's name? Don't think you can act close to him just because you overheard the don's name.”

I bit my pale lips tightly, not daring to move, terrified that any sudden motion would speed up the blood loss.

The tearing pain in my lower abdomen made me tremble all over, but weakly, I raised my head and told her, “The child I’m carrying… it really is Brett's. If this baby dies, none of you can afford the consequences...”

Sophia covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with laughter.

“What a fake. Don Brett Falcone doesn't even have an official girlfriend, so where would a child come from? If you want to use such a lame excuse to scam money, you've picked the wrong person.”

She didn't know, of course.

Brett had enemies everywhere, and to protect me, he kept my identity completely hidden. The outside world believed the mafia boss didn't touch women, and even his right-hand men had never seen me.

This secrecy, originally meant to save my life, had now become a deadly death sentence.

A few meters away, the snow was stained red with blood.

I tried hard to control my struggle as I reached out to grab the black-clothed henchman’s pant leg.

“Please... move aside… Take me to the hospital... Nothing can happen to my child...”

However, the two henchmen pinning my shoulders didn't budge. One of them even lifted his foot and stomped hard on the back of my hand.

My bones made a sickening crunch.

“Boss's orders. Until Miss Sophia nods, not even a fly is allowed to fly out.”

I broke out in a cold sweat from the pain, as my abdomen cramped in relentless waves. My consciousness was fading fast.

“Baby... hang on a little longer...” I murmured under my breath. “Mommy will take you to see a doctor right away!”

For the sake of the child in my belly, I put down all my dignity and weakly grabbed the henchman’s pant leg again.

“Let the medical staff outside come in... I’m begging you... as long as you save my child, I'll trade my own life for it...”

The lead henchman pulled out a black handgun and pressed it directly against my forehead.

“Shut up. That thing in your belly isn't worth much. If you make another scene, I'll kill you right now.”

The area was packed with onlookers. Nearby, a few maintenance workers in work clothes couldn't watch any longer.

They raised their wrenches and shouted, “Does being in the mafia mean you can disregard human life?!”

“Clear the road! The ambulance can't get in!”

“That's a pregnant woman!”

The crowd’s emotions started getting out of control, and some tried to push past the men on the perimeter.

Then, a gunshot rang out.

The lead henchman fired a deafening shot into the sky. In an instant, the crowd covered their heads and crouched down in fear.

Several submachine guns cocked at once, their dark muzzles pointing straight at the crowd.

“Take one step forward, and you die.”

Sophia looked at the terrified civilians, satisfied.

She walked up to me, reached into her bag, and pulled out a few large bills before slapping them onto my face.

“Poor people never change. All this drama just to extort a payout.”

She stepped on a piece of broken glass that had fallen from a Bentley headlight, still smeared with car oil.

“Eat all the broken glass on the ground. As long as you eat it clean, I’ll show mercy and let those doctors outside come in to collect your body.”

I trembled with rage. “You're trying to kill me!”

Sophia sneered and raised her foot, kicking away the hands protecting my belly.

“I'll give you ten seconds. If you don't eat it, I'll have the motorcade run straight over your belly right now.”

Severe contractions came wave after wave, and warm blood had already soaked through my woolen coat.

With the child’s movements in my belly growing weaker and weaker, I was forced to make a choice.

I slowly crawled toward that pile of broken glass and grabbed a handful of sharp shards and stuffed them into my mouth. Though blood poured out from the corners of my mouth in large streams, I chewed mechanically, forcing it down my throat.

My throat was cut into countless slits, hurting until it cramped in severe pain. With air leaking from my windpipe, my voice came out hideously raspy.

“I ate it. Quick, let the doctors in. Save my child...”

  • The Cost of His Betrayal   Chapter 10

Though he survived, Brett was mentally and physically hollowed out.I heard he built a crude wooden shack and moved right next to the cemetery. Rain or shine, he spent his days by our baby's tombstone. The mafia empire that once ruled the city collapsed overnight. Without Brett’s terrifying presence to hold it together, rival families rapidly carved up his turf. Some rivals even went to the cemetery looking for him, wanting to take his head as a trophy. But seeing him in that pathetic state, they lost all interest in pulling the trigger. Bored street thugs even tried to humiliate him by spitting on the tombstone right in front of his face.If this were the past, that man would have been chopped up and fed to the dogs. Now, Brett merely wiped the tombstone clean with his shirt, taking their fists and kicks without uttering a single word.He believed he deserved every blow and was using this brutal self-torture to ease the unbearable guilt crushing his heart. But I knew better. He

In the end, I took a taxi to Sacred Heart Hospital—not to save him, but to watch him face his penance. When I reached the ER lobby, those familiar glass doors were still there. Only this time, no men were locking it down. Just a group of healthcare workers stood there, their faces pale with terror.I pushed open the operating room door, and the pungent, metallic stench of blood hit me instantly.Brett was tied to the operating table. His torso was bare, marred by a deep, jagged puncture wound across his abdomen, blood constantly gushing out.Several surgeons stood holding hemostats but didn't dare step forward. Because Brett was holding a scalpel, pressing it straight against his own neck.“If anyone comes closer, I'll die right here,” he growled. Drenched in cold sweat, his face was as pale as paper. As I walked in, his unfocused eyes suddenly lit up, only to dim just as quickly.“Erin, you came.”A grim, twisted smile broke across his face. “You're finally willing to come see

As I turned around and walked toward the gate, Brett immediately rushed forward to meet me. He held a thick envelope, his voice terrifyingly raspy.“Erin, these are all the assets, trust funds, and several overseas estates in my name. They've all been transferred to you.“Take this money, leave this city, and go wherever you want.” He held the envelope out in front of me, his hands trembling violently.“I know you don't want to see me. But just take it... please. Let me do this much.”I didn't take it, nor did I knock it to the ground. I just stared quietly at the file, finding the whole thing absurd.“Do you think giving me these things will take away any of the pain from losing my baby?” My voice was quiet, yet every word bled with sorrow. The bodyguards watched us nervously, but Brett glared at them so fiercely that they backed down instantly.“I don't want it.”I looked past the envelope, my eyes fixed on his.“I'm staying right here to watch you. I want to see how you, a

The cold-blooded tyrant who made other mafia families tremble in fear was now bowing his head, as humble and broken as a child who had done something unforgivable. But he didn't understand. After losing her baby, a mother no longer cared about life or death.“Brett, as I lay bleeding on those cold steps, I thought back to seven years ago.” I stared at him with hollow eyes.“You took three bullets to the gut back then, and I stayed by your side for three whole days. When you woke up, you promised nothing would ever touch me or our baby.“You kept your word. Outsiders really couldn't touch us.”I looked at him, tears finally slipping down my face without a sound. “Because the one who killed our baby was you.”In agonizing pain, Brett clutched his head as his knees sank back into the freezing snow. He slammed his fists into the hard ground again and again, his knuckles quickly turning into a bloody, mangled mess.“I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry… I really didn't know it was you two… I

He looked at my mouth, covered in blood and split lips. Then, his gaze drifted to my twisted, broken right leg and the dark red blood soaking through the hem of my coat.“What happened to your leg? And why's your mouth covered in blood?” His voice shook violently as he reached out a hand, trying to touch me.I turned my head away calmly, dodging his touch.“To calm your Sophia down, they forced me to eat all the broken glass off the ground,” I said in a light, nonchalant tone, as if I were telling someone else's story.“I thought if I just ate it, the doctors would be allowed out to save my baby… Brett, I did everything they asked, but you still didn't let them out.”Brett's eyes welled up with tears. Guilt tore through him, choking out whatever composure he had left.He threw his head back, letting out a roar of absolute despair before drawing his sidearm from his waist. Turning around, he faced the henchmen who had blocked me.A rapid succession of gunshots rang out. Before t

“Erin, what on earth happened?! You're pregnant—why are you here?!”I finally raised my head and looked at this man, the one I had once loved to my very core. The excruciating pain and blood loss had drained every ounce of strength from my body, leaving nothing inside my heart but emptiness.“Why am I here?” The corners of my pale lips twitched upward into a faint, bitter smile.“Brett, wasn't it you who personally gave the order to seal off that entire street?”I swallowed the coppery taste of blood in my throat, my voice eerily calm as I spoke.“I went out shopping, and Sophia’s car ran into me. I wouldn't stop bleeding.“I called you for help, begging you to tell the hospital to open its doors and save our baby. But you were too busy fussing over her minor scratches.“Your henchmen told me through that glass door that if anyone dared to bother you, their whole family would be thrown into the ocean.”Every drop of color drained from Brett’s face.“No… I didn't know… Sophia
