Chapter 1

“If you really cared about my healing, Kael, you wouldn’t bring her into our home.” I gripped the polished wooden edge of the dining table, my knuckles turning stark white as a familiar, dull ache shot through my left knee. It was a damp Tuesday evening, and the relentless rain pouring outside mirrored the heavy storm brewing inside my chest. Across from me stood Kael Sterling, my husband of three years, wearing a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves loosely rolled up to his forearms. His dark, striking eyes were filled with patient concern—the exact look a doctor gives an uncooperative patient, rather than a man looking at the woman he loved.

“Luna, please just listen to reason for once,” Kael said softly, taking a slow, calculated step toward me across the polished marble floor. “Seraphina is one of the most sought-after psychological consultants in the country. She specializes in post-traumatic recovery and anxiety disorders. She isn’t coming into our home as my ex-fiancée, Luna. She is coming here as your specialist. You’ve been trapped inside this mansion for two entire years, terrified of the outside world, waking up drenched in cold sweat every single night. I only want you to get better. I want you to walk without fear, to smile again, and to reclaim the life you lost.”

“She is the woman you loved before me, Kael!” My voice cracked, raw and heavy with suppressed tears. The bitter memory flooded my mind without mercy—the rain-slicked highway two years ago, the blinding yellow glare of an oncoming truck, and Kael lying unconscious in the driver’s seat after drinking himself senseless because Seraphina had abruptly abandoned him to pursue her career abroad. I was the one who pulled over. I was the one who threw my body into the twisted, sharp wreckage to drag his heavy frame onto the grass seconds before the vehicle exploded. The heavy metal frame crushed my left knee, leaving me with permanent joint damage, deep surgical scars across my legs, severe anxiety, and crippling insomnia. I sacrificed my brilliant career as a rising star in international fashion design to save his life.

Kael took a deep, audible breath, stepping closer and kneeling gently on the floor right in front of my chair. He reached out, his warm, broad hands carefully cupping my injured knee, applying the subtle pressure massage he had painstakingly practiced every night for twenty-four months. For two years, Kael had been nothing short of meticulous. He had hired contractors to remove every single sharp glass decorative object from our home, soft-padded every wooden corner, and stayed up until dawn holding me through every terror-filled nightmare. To the outside world, Kael Sterling was the ultimate devoted husband—a powerful, wealthy billionaire CEO who cherished his injured wife above all else.

“Luna,” he whispered gently, looking up into my eyes with genuine distress. “I owe you my life. You are a debt I will spend my entire lifetime paying back. I will never leave you, and I will never allow you to leave me. But your reliance on me has become unhealthy. It’s making you fragile and weak. Seraphina’s expert advice is completely right: if I keep sheltering you from every shadow, you will never truly heal. You need to face pain and discomfort in order to grow.”

A cold chill settled deep in the pit of my stomach. A debt. He spoke the word with so much tender affection, yet it felt like a heavy steel chain wrapped around my throat. I was not his cherished partner; I was an honorable obligation, a moral duty he felt obligated to pay off. And now that Seraphina was back in town, she had effortlessly manipulated her way into our private home under the guise of therapy.

The heavy front door chime sounded softly through the foyer, breaking the suffocating silence. Seraphina walked into the grand hallway, casually wiping water droplets from her elegant beige trench coat. She was breathtakingly poised, with radiant skin, perfectly styled dark hair, and an air of quiet sophistication. Unlike me, who hid behind baggy oversized sweaters and loose pants to conceal my leg brace and deep scars, Seraphina radiated absolute beauty, confidence, and health.

“Kael, Luna,” Seraphina greeted with a warm, elegant smile that didn't reach her cold eyes. “I came as soon as I finished my clinic hours. Kael mentioned that you had another severe anxiety episode this afternoon, Luna.” She walked smoothly into the living room, setting her designer leather briefcase on the marble counter before glancing around at the customized soft rubber covers on our coffee tables.

“As your psychological advisor, Luna, I have to be completely blunt,” Seraphina said softly, her tone dripping with professional authority. “This environment is doing severe long-term damage to your mental recovery. Kael’s extreme coddling is actively enabling your helplessness. By removing every obstacle, he is keeping you dependent and frail. If you truly want to overcome your trauma, we need to strip away these artificial safety barriers immediately.”

I looked from Seraphina to Kael, waiting for him to object. I waited for him to explain that those safety barriers kept me from breaking my bones during my violent night tremors. Instead, Kael nodded slowly, his expression firm and resolved. “Seraphina is right, Luna. My overprotectiveness has held you back. Starting tomorrow, we will follow her exposure program completely.”

My heart pounded violently against my ribs, choking the breath from my lungs. I stared at the man who had held me through two years of darkness, now seamlessly taking orders from the woman who had broken his heart. A sharp realization hit me like a splash of freezing water: his care had always been genuine, but his devotion belonged to another.

I pulled my leg away from Kael’s grip and stood up slowly. “I see,” I said, my voice eerily calm despite the violent trembling in my hands. “If that is what you both believe is best, then so be it.”

That night, while Kael slept deeply beside me, I quietly got out of bed and limped into the dimly lit study. I powered on my private laptop and opened an encrypted browser window. I searched for the personal contact details of Professor Harrison, my former mentor at the prestigious London Design Institute. Within minutes, an email draft lay open before me.

‘Dear Professor Harrison, I am writing to accept the international design director position in London.’ My fingers hovered over the keys before setting my departure date: exactly thirty days from today. The countdown had officially begun.

As I clicked save, heavy footsteps echoed outside in the hallway. I quickly closed the laptop screen, my heart hammering against my chest as Kael pushed the door open...

I stood motionless in the middle of our grand dining room, listening to the monotonous patter of rain striking the glass windows. Every breath felt heavy, burdened by the realization that the man I had given up everything for was slipping away into a illusion painted by his past. Two years ago, when I lay in the intensive care unit with titanium pins being drilled into my shattered knee bone, Kael had held my hand and promised to be my strength. He had promised that my sacrifice would never be forgotten, that he would shield me from the cold realities of the world forever.

Yet, standing here tonight, looking at his handsome face illuminated by the subtle chandelier light, I realized that his devotion was built on guilt rather than love. To Kael, I was a living monument to his moral failing on that rainy night—a constant, painful reminder that his foolish drunken grief over Seraphina had nearly cost two lives. Taking care of me was his penance, his way of earning absolution from his own conscience. And now that Seraphina had returned with her polished medical titles and quiet charm, he was eager to believe that by 'curing' me through her drastic methods, he could finally pay off his debt and set himself free.

Chapter 4 The drive home late that night was suffocatingly tense. Kael drove his sedan in total silence, his hands locked tightly on the wheel. Seraphina sat quietly in the back seat, pretending to read articles on her phone, though her tense sighs filled the car. When we arrived at the mansion, Seraphina hurriedly excused herself to her guest suite. The second the front doors clicked shut, Kael spun around, his emotional control collapsing. “What was that scene tonight, Luna?” he yelled, his voice bouncing off the high grand ceiling. “You allowed your friend to humiliate Seraphina in front of top industry leaders! She is devoting her time to helping you, and you treated her like an enemy!” I removed my heels, setting them neatly by the entryway, and looked at him without emotion. “Seraphina humiliated herself by handing out fake medical advice in an art gallery. And Jax only stated the truth. You abandoned your wife to go pick up your ex-fiancée over a minor tire issue.” “She wa

Chapter 3Friday evening came quickly. The storm clouds had parted, revealing a crisp night lit by golden city lights. I sat at my dressing table, looking at my reflection for the first time in two years. I chose an exquisite emerald green silk gown—a piece from my own archived fashion line. The split hem revealed the long scar on my left knee, but for the first time, I felt no urge to hide it beneath heavy fabric. The door opened, and Kael walked in wearing a dark charcoal suit. He stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching as he stared at me in total amazement. His eyes took in the silk gown, my styled hair, and the quiet elegance he hadn’t seen in years. “Luna... you look breathtaking,” he breathed out, stepping forward.“Thank you,” I said calmly, finishing my lipstick. “I am attending an event tonight. An old friend from my design academy invited me to an private exhibition.”Kael’s face immediately tightened with anxiety. “An exhibition? A crowded room? Luna, your knee isn’

Chapter 2Kael stood in the doorway of the dimly lit study, framed by the pale light of the corridor. “Luna? What are you doing up at three in the morning?” His voice was rich with immediate concern as he hurried inside. Without waiting for an answer, he wrapped a plush cashmere blanket over my shoulders. “Your knee needs rest, sweetheart. Why aren’t you sleeping?”“I was just browsing through my old student design files,” I lied smoothly, resting my palm flat over the laptop cover so he wouldn't notice the pulsing blue light of the power button. “My leg was throbbing, so I couldn't rest.”Kael sighed softly, lifting me effortlessly into his arms and carrying me back to our master bedroom. He laid me down on the bed with gentleness, pulling the duvet up before sitting on the mattress edge to massage my calf. His touch was practiced and firm. Anyone watching would believe he worshipped me. Yet, as he leaned down, I caught the subtle scent of sweet Jasmine perfume on his collar—the sign
