Chapter 2

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
Hank's expression turned cold. "You heard everything?"

"Yeah," I replied.

"When did you wake up?"

"When you started arguing with Josh."

Suddenly, the room felt suffocating.

Hank held my gaze for a long while, but there was no guilt in his eyes; only the coldness after being caught red-handed.

Eventually, he shrugged. "Well, since you heard, you ought to know that I'm right."

"How so?" I asked.

"You're barren, but you hid it for me."

"I didn't mean to."

"Seven years," he growled, his eyes narrowing sharply. "You had countless opportunities to tell me, but you never did."

I lowered my gaze, tugging on my blanket. "And what about you?"

"What about me?"

"You had countless opportunities to tell me about Sue's children, but you never did."

Hank's lips thinned. "They're my responsibility."

I was still holding his gaze, and suddenly felt exhausted. "Just send me the divorce agreement."

He raised a brow. "What's gotten into you this time?"

"Nothing," I replied, staring at his prayer beads. "I'm just leaving you."

Hank suddenly laughed softly in disdain. "And where would you go without me?"

"Home…"

"You don't have one."

"Then I'll stay at a hotel.

"You have no job and no savings. You leave my house, and you won't even be able to fend for yourself."

I was left silent for a few beats.

He was right.

I resigned from work after we married, not because he asked. His mother had been ill, and the Frosts found themselves caught in a chain of crises. As husband and wife, I thought it was only right to support each other through those hard times.

Soon after, Hank brought those children home one after the other. I didn't even have time to work.

Everyday, I'd wake up at six to cook the children breakfast before sending them to school. After that, I had to deal with housework, tuck them to sleep, and then clean up the living room.

When Hank occasionally returned home, all he saw was a clean house, piping hot food, clean laundry, and five kids that called me mom but weren't mine.

"It doesn't matter, I said. "I can start over."

Hank laughed as if I was joking, his eyes narrowing darkly. "Did you think living out there is easy?"

"That's my business," I replied bluntly.

"Yvie Stark!" he bellowed my name, not in control for the first time.

But I wasn't afraid.

Seven years ago, I used to worry about making him angry.

Five years ago, I used to worry about disappointing him.

Three years ago, I used to worry about him leaving me.

But now, I suddenly realize his feelings aren't any of my business.

He could get upset, tell me that I'm being unreasonable.

But I don't care, and I refuse to play his games anymore.

Hank showed up three days after I moved into Wendy's place, standing under a tree as it rained all over him.Wendy entered with a bowl of fruits, chuckling. "I guess the ex is playing the tragic character now?""I guess.""How does an ice bucket sound?""It's already raining.""Boiling water it is."I couldn't help laughing, but sniffed as I was done. Wendy sat beside me, sighing. "If it hurts, just let it out.""No, I just find it funny," I replied, looking out the window. "My love was worthless to him, but now that I stopped, he's playing the loving male lead. Not all things that come tardy are worth cherishing.""I know," Wendy replied."So, let him stand there all he wants," I said, and I closed the curtains. It rained for six hours that night. Though Hank never left, I didn't go to the window to check. As the next morning arrived, his car was gone. However, a bag remained at the door. The prayer beads were repaired, and there was a note drenched in water that read: [

When our eyes met, Hank straightened in an instant. He opened the car door while it moved, shouting, "Stop the car!" The chauffeur promptly floored the brakes while he leapt out, catching our car.As he smacked my window repeatedly, Wendy eyed me. "Are we stopping?""Nope," I replied, looking anywhere but at Hank. With that, Wendy floored the pedal, quickly leaving Hank in the distance. I could see him still standing by the curb in the rearview mirror, his hand still outstretched. It was the first time I never stopped when he asked, and the first time he couldn't do anything but watch me leave.Soon, my phone started ringing. He called me twice, and I hung up both times. As it rang a third time, Wendy grabbed it and turned it off. "Exes should at least know their place.""Damn right," I replied, leaning against my seat and taking in the fleeting sights outside the window.-Still at the hospital, Hank was left watching as Wendy's car sped into the distance, his chest heaving

Hank stumbled backwards, stepping on the papers scattered across the floor. All of it was proof that Yvie had willingly relinquished any claims to the Frost family fortune, even refusing alimony. She had never tried to trade the life debt for money, and she certainly didn't claim a house with the seven years she wasted on him.She simply wanted to…leave.Still watching Hank, Lydia continued to speak. "She shielded you from a burning pillar at 14, married you at 21, and then your bastard pushed her off the stairs at 28. So tell me again, Hank… What does she owe you?"Snap!Suddenly, the thread binding the prayer beads snapped, scattering the brown beads all over the floor.Hank looked down at his wrist. For the first time, he looked confused. After the fire, Yvie gave him that bead bracelet. He wore it for over ten years. She was still injured and had to lean against the wall just to walk, but she put that bead bracelet around his wrist and told him, "This will keep you safe

Hank froze like he was struck by a bolt from the blue, while Lydia continued, her voice cracking. "Yvie was just fourteen at the time. When she tried to save you, the collapsing pillar hit her on the hip, and shrapnel tore through her."The doctors tried the whole night, but ultimately decided the only way to save her was to remove her womb. She lay in ICU for two weeks before finally waking up, but the first thing she asked was whether you survived."Hank couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Why did no one tell me…?"Lydia watched as he turned pale, and finally gave a reply."Because the doctor said you suffered from PTSD, and you'd go into shock at the mention of the fire. And because Yvie told us not to, insisting you shouldn't be put through that."When you stabilized, she still wouldn't let us tell you. She didn't want you to find out she was barren because of you, or force you to marry her out of guilt. She'd rather you didn't love her, than you being tied down because y

Hank held her gaze. "That doesn't count."Sue wobbled. "Why?""That's enough," he growled, refusing to listen to more of her nonsense. "Josh will arrange a house for you."Sue suddenly burst out laughing. "Oh, I get it. You regret everything now, don't you? And right after Yvie left!"Hank's eyes narrowed coldly right then. "Leave."Sue was ready to snap further, but the butler had called for the bodyguards. She balled her knuckles, took one last look at the papers scattered across the floor, and smirked. "She will never forgive you."It was a bullet that struck Hank's sore spot with pinpoint precision, and he snapped, "Get out!"After Sue and the children left, Hank reached down to pick up the papers while Lydia watched coolly. "Finally worried, are we?""I'm not.""You're almost breaking your bracelet."Hank looked down and saw that he was holding the prayer bead bracelet he always wore in his palm, squeezing it so hard that his knuckles were pale.As he relaxed his grip

The living room turned deathly silent, while all color drained out of Sue's face.As Hank wheeled on her, she rushed to him and grabbed his arm while shaking her head repeatedly. "He's just a child! You can't take that at face value. And you know how hard it was for me, having five kids but unable to stay with them…"Hank quietly drew his arm out of her grasp. "You chose that yourself."Jim, staring blankly at Sue, said, "Mommy, you said we can be family if Yvie leaves…"Sue's lips were trembling at that point. "Jim, just go upstairs."However, Jim kept pressing, "Yvie isn't dead. Can't you be my mommy anyway?"No one dared look at Lydia at that moment.Closing her eyes, Lydia groaned. "Get them all out of here. Put them back where you found them."Hank frowned. "Where will they go?""They have their mother, don't they?" Lydia scoffed, turning to Sue. "You have the audacity to pump them out, so you will take care of them yourself."Sue promptly replied, "Yes, I will." "Of
