A deep bellied laughter boomed across the wide clearing, causing me to tear my eyes away from the figures that appeared.

“What are you doing, Malachi?” I demanded, my fist clenching as I regained my stance. “If it's me you want, then come for me.”

“Not everything is about you, Luna Elara,” he said, rolling his eyes. His head snapped up and he began muttering some words. They sounded like a chant but I wasn't sure.

He repeated the words over and over, his voice growing deeper with each word that came out of his mouth.

“Stop him,” Zuko yelled to the men in the first line but no one moved.

The figures from the tree line had gotten closer and when I turned my attention back to it, my jaw went slack.

“No, this isn't happening.”

But it was.

Out of the six dirt covered or decaying faces, I could clearly recognise one. Marcus. One of our fallen warriors. Corpses had risen from their graves.

Marcus's head turned toward us with a sickening crack. His jaw hung loose, one eye socket hanging ou

The ground beneath our feet trembled.“What's happening?” Trevor called out, as we struggled to keep our balance. All except Sandro who stood still, glaring in Malachi's direction. The stone floor began to rise, moving as one solid piece and lifting us upward like we were on an elevator. The chained wolves screamed louder as they rose with us.Sandro grabbed my arm to steady me as the chamber ascended with speed.Above us, the rocky ceiling split open with a sound like the world tearing apart. Blood red moonlight poured through the widening crack and we burst into the open air.I stared in disbelief. We were no longer underground. The chamber had risen to become a massive stone platform elevated high above the temple ruins. Around us stretched an open space I'd never seen before. It looked like a circular arena carved from ancient rock, surrounded by pillars that reached up toward the blood moon.“What is this place?” Alessia breathed.“The original temple,” Father Matteo whispered in

Trevor caught her, lowering her gently to the ground.“She's fine,” Trevor confirmed, checking her pulse. “But she'll be out for a while.”“We can't take her with us,” Lady Thalia said, her voice hard but not exactly unkind. “She's a liability as long as she's under his control.”“I can't just leave her!” Sandro's refusal and disgust in her statement was evident.Lady Thalia was right but I understood how he must feel.“You have to.” I grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at me. “She fought so hard through mind control to warn us. Don't let that sacrifice be for nothing.”He looked down at Sofia's unconscious form, then at the temple entrance where red light pulsed and chanting echoed. The dead bodies of the hooded figures scattered around the ground.“You,” he called to one of the warriors. “Stay with her. Keep her safe. Restrain her if you need to buy gently. Just don't allow her to follow us.”The warrior nodded, pulling Sofia's body into his arms so he could move her.Sandro turne

Sandro staggered back as if he'd been struck by lightning. I felt the exact same way too.“What are you talking about? This isn't real. You're in the safe house. You're supposed to be–”“Protected?” Sofia tilted her head with that same mechanical movement. “I think she's being mind controlled,” Makayla said, watching with increasing anxiety and I nodded.Tearing my eyes away from Sofia, I spoke up. “Sandro, I think she's being mind controlled.”He turned to me and the look in his eyes made me stumble back. He was devastated. This was worse than Silas’ betrayal. He considered my words for a moment. “Fight it!” Sandro pleaded, taking a step towards her. “Sofia, I know you're in there. You're stronger than this. Fight the control!”For just a moment, something flickered in Sofia's glazed eyes but it was gone before I could even recognize it, replaced by cold emptiness.“There's nothing to fight,” she said. “I serve the Master now. As will you all, once the harvest is complete.”The oth

Makayla's paws slapped the ground hard as we rushed toward the Ancient Luna temple. Trees blurred past us and cold wind rushed through my fur.“I was worried. Why have you been so quiet?” I asked her, finally bringing myself to talk.“Something feels terribly wrong, Elara. I just haven't been able to figure out what,” she replied, her voice was filled with anxiety.Whatever she was feeling was right. But beyond that, something was wrong in the forest. Reality itself seemed to be shifting around us. Tree branches reached toward us like grasping fingers and we dodged out of the way. The path we'd been following suddenly veered left when I could have sworn it went straight. We had gone beyond Moretti Brun territory and towards unmarked territory where the ancient temple was. “The blood moon is affecting everything,” Lady Thalia called from her position beside Raka’s massive black form. She wasn't flying but she certainly wasn't walking either. “Reality is bending. Just keep your eyes an

“What's going on?” I asked, feeling panic rise to my chest again. I hated being in the dark. Whatever Malachi's plans were or how he planned to achieve them were completely unknown to us and it irked me.“He's gone. But where did he go?” “Alpha, behind you!” A warrior from the main battle field called out and we all whipped our heads towards Sandro. One of the dark creatures moved behind Sandro with such speed, none of us noticed it. Lady Thalia shot one hand out and a single streak of lightning struck out of her fingertips, sending the creature down into a pile of ash.We all stared at her, star struck at her speed and accuracy. Her action seemed to have dragged the attention of the other harvested souls. They turned, staggering towards the newly arrived Fae creatures with determination. “He used your magic and the blood moon to tear the veil,” Lady Thalia noted with a frown as she took in the scene before her. “We must contain the territory now and find a way to close that veil,”

Sandro slammed into the corpse and knocked it aside.“NO!” I screamed. “Don't hurt her! Sandro, please don't–”“Elara, this is not your grandmother and I have to stop her!” He pinned the thrashing corpse down with his body so he could reason with me. “She'll try to hurt you!”Golden light sparked from my hands as my magic crackled wildly around me. “I don't care!” I was sobbing now. “You know what she means to me. She's my grannie!”“Luna, you need to get out of the way,” Rose appeared beside me, her bow drawn.I spun to face her. “Don't you dare! Don't you dare shoot her, Rose!”“Elara, listen to me,” but I wasn't interested in what anyone had to say. The sound of the battle faded in the distance. “No! I won't let any of you–”Pain exploded in my side, cutting the rest of my statement.I gasped, looking down to see blackened fingernails buried deep in my flesh. My grandmother's corpse had broken free from Sandro's grip somehow, and had attacked me before anyone could stop her. The
