CHAPTER 29

ISOLDE'S POV

Orren stood in my doorway with six guards behind him, and he would not look at me.

I had been sitting by the window since first light, waiting for the order to ride. Instead, a note had come from Rhaelen with only four words: The ride will wait. I had told myself that it was the cold. Now I stood up slowly, and my hands began to shake against my skirt.

"His Majesty wishes to see you," Orren said.

"Is that all?"

"That is all I may say."

He turned and walked ahead of me, a

CHAPTER 30: Coins in the StrawRHAELEN’S POVElder Corvin was waiting outside my study before the sun had fully risen.“The whole fortress knows that Lady Isolde is in the cells, Your Majesty.” His gray eyes did not blink. “The council asks that she be tried before it votes. A trial would settle the matter by the end of the week.”“There will be no trial until I say so.”“Then say it soon. The council votes in ten days, and the lords who stayed after the Gathering are asking whether the Alpha King can keep his own house in order.”I walked past him without answering. He had asked for the annulment three times, and now he asked for a trial, and I did not like how quickly he had learned what I had done.I had not slept in two nights. The ache behind my eyes had grown worse each hour since I ordered her taken below, and I knew why, and I would not say it even to myself. I only knew that the cells lay three floors under my feet, and that my thoughts would not stay on the reports in front

Nobody spoke on the stairs. Our boots rang against the stone, and I could hear my own heart louder than any of them.At the study door, Orren stepped aside, and I went in alone.Rhaelen stood at the window with his back to me and his hands clasped behind him. He did not turn around."Twenty men were waiting at the ford on the eastern road," he said. "They had rope and rested horses, and their fire was cold by the time my riders reached the ridge."My stomach dropp

  • The Cursed Alpha King’s Mind-Reading Mate   A Lie for One Ear

CHAPTER 28: A Lie for One EarRHAELEN'S POVI had not slept, and I could still feel her arm under my claws.I stood at the study window before dawn and watched gray light fill the courtyard. My hands were clean. I had washed them three times, and it made no difference.Maelora had sent word at midnight that the four cuts were clean and would heal without a scar. I had not asked her to tell me, and I had read the note six times.Orren knocked once and came in. The cut above his eye had dried black, and his sleeve was still torn. "The dead are counted," he said. "And there is something you must hear.""Say it.""The man who grabbed Lady Isolde told the others to take her alive. Not a scratch, he said. And he used her name." He kept his voice flat. "She told me so on the road."I turned from the window. "Did you question the rogues?""One lived through the night. Maelora worked on him until dawn." He paused. "He died with his lips gone blue. She says it was a poison she cannot name."Som

CHAPTER 27: The Mark on Her WristISOLDE'S POVNobody spoke to me on the ride back.We spent the night in the granary yard, and at first light, Orren laid our dead across their saddles. Six riders were gone. The granary master had been found in his own storehouse, cold and stiff, and the men who carried him out would not look at me.Rhaelen rode at the head of the line with his back to us. He had not said one word to me since the night before, when he knelt in the mud and stared at my arm. I kept my left hand over the torn sleeve and my eyes on the mare's ears.Past the ford, Orren reached over and took my reins. He slowed both horses until the others rode far ahead of us."Your sleeve is soaked through," he said."It's nothing.""It is four cuts the length of your arm." He did not look at me. "I saw how you got them. I will not speak of it unless you ask me to. But I will not let you bleed in the saddle."He wrapped my arm in a strip of linen, fast and neat, as if he had done it for

  • The Cursed Alpha King’s Mind-Reading Mate   The Claw Marks

CHAPTER 26: The Claw MarksRHAELEN'S POVI had the rider taken to the kitchens and ordered forty riders to the courtyard before he had finished speaking.I knew what it would cost as I came down the stairs. The granary was a day's ride from the fortress, and I had not touched Maelora's medicine in days. If the curse took me on the road, there would be no one beside me who could stop it. But the granary master was dead, and a letter had gone to the border about an inspection that no one had arranged. Varek had offered to send word ahead to the granary. I had not asked him whether he had.Orren had ridden into a trap, and she had ridden into it with him. I told myself that I was going for Orren. He was my oldest friend, and I would not sit in a study while he died. It was only partly true, and I did not look any closer at the rest.Varek was crossing the courtyard when the horses were brought round, with his green coat over his arm. He asked whether I meant to ride, and whether he might

  • The Cursed Alpha King’s Mind-Reading Mate   Turn Left

CHAPTER 25: Turn LeftISOLDE'S POVWe rode out of the fortress at dawn, with a cold wind in our faces and the mountains still black against the sky.Orren rode at my left, with six riders ahead of us and six behind. He had not said a word since we passed the gate, and I had not asked him to. I held the reins in both hands and tried not to think about how badly I sat a horse.I had not wanted to come. But for days I had been kept in rooms with guards at the door, and Rhaelen had stood in the courtyard and told me he did not trust me, and then he had sent me out anyway. I could not decide whether that was an insult or the closest thing to faith he knew how to give.I had brought my bag with me, with the communication stone and the note and the flower still hidden in the lining, because I did not dare leave them where the servants could reach. The wolf had not spoken since the night of the Gathering. I did not know whether he could reach me so far from the fortress, and I was afraid to f
