Ysabella's POV

When they left, I lay down on my bed and tried to sleep, but clearly sleep wouldn't come, and I lay there staring into the darkness until dawn, my head a whirlwind of thoughts.

I continued with my tasks as if nothing had happened; it wouldn't be through me that they would discover Lady Samantha had run away.

And that didn't take long to happen.

"SAMANTHA! WHERE ARE YOU?"

I heard the king shouting through the corridors in the early hours of the morning, his voice booming, shaking the castle walls. I clasped my hands to my chest and closed my eyes tightly, afraid of gripping me.

The king clearly didn't need to search the entire castle to know she was far away. The mate's entourage already told him that; the king could sense that his fateful mate was very far. Unreachable.

"My king? Why are you so agitated? Has something happened?" I heard Beta Emrich's voice, always ready to attend to his alpha.

"Samantha, Emrich. She's not here!" The king's voice was altered; I could feel fear in those lines.

"Are you sure about that, my sovereign? Today is the day of your mating ritual, the long-awaited day. She may be absent to better prepare herself," Emrich tried.

"When I woke up, her side of the bed was as cold as a grave, Emrich," the king said, his voice heavy and choked. "Her clothes aren't in the room, her scent isn't anywhere. And I can feel the mate's connection lost, like a tangled ball of yarn."

I pressed my hands tighter against my chest. The king would start to freak out now. What if he turned into that monster he usually turned into? Clearly, he would kill anyone in front of him, and I honestly didn't want to be near him at a time like this.

I was so scared. It was Samantha who literally saved me from him, because if she hadn't been his soother, I would have had to be, and then I would have ended up dead so easily.

“I ask you to calm down, my king,” Emrich said in a composed voice. “I will have them search for her throughout the castle and all of Pack until they find her, although I believe she is not very far away, which you have assumed on purpose. She truly intended to marry you; there is no reason why she would want to disappear so suddenly.”

Emrich's naiveté touched me. If only he knew that his king was nothing like the person he believed him to be, and that Samantha had precisely fled from him after discovering that she would be kept prisoner in that castle as his soother forever. There was nothing noble in their union; it was just a cruel king wanting to imprison the only woman who could keep him sane.

I heard footsteps as they parted, then I could sigh with relief. But when I thought he would leave me out of this, I was very wrong, because moments later the guards came to get me to the throne room.

King Maddox was seated on his throne, his face contorted with fury and discomfort. I could feel his anger everywhere, and worst of all, Emrich wasn't around to defend me.

“It seems that Samantha and Tori packed their things and left,” he said. “And you, who were their closest friend, I'm sure you want to tell me something you know about this.” His gaze was scrutinizing.

I swallowed hard. I was sure he could feel the sweat on my back. “I’m sorry, my king, but I don’t know anything,” I lied, my voice dry. “When I woke up that morning, Tori’s bed was already empty.”

“And you really think I believe you? The three of you have always been very close. And you really think I’ll believe that if they left, they didn’t tell you anything?” His voice had a mocking tone.

I stared at the floor, feeling that my life was in danger. “I may very well not have seen anything, my king. For when a person decides to be invisible, they become invisible. But the question should be why did they choose to become that way? What could have happened to cause that?”

“You insolent girl! How dare you insult me?” He roared at me. I barely noticed how he closed the distance between us; his hand was already on my neck, his strong fingers gripping and squeezing so hard that I soon began to feel it hurting my lungs.

“Please…” I tried to plead, pulling his fingers away from me, but it was as if I were pulling steel. His eyes were such a strong gold that they bordered on red; he exuded danger, the will to kill blinding any lucidity in him.

I knew I wasn't going to escape this one. And I just wished I had had a little more time to love Emrich…

“Release my mate!” It was him, Beta Emrich.

He came running, crossing the throne room, his heart pounding.

“What did you say?” Maddox asked, but he was still gripping my neck.

“She is my mate, therefore it is my duty to protect her. And you saw, my beloved king, by touching her, you are touching me. By hurting her, you are hurting me. By killing her, you are killing me.” Profound words spoken at the decisive moment by his second-in-command.

King Maddox pondered while still holding my neck in his hand. He wanted to kill me to erase my words, because they had touched a wound he was avoiding looking at, because there was truth in my words and he knew that Samantha might very well have left because she discovered the rottenness he was.

Then he pushed me hard, my body colliding with Beta Emrich's, who caught me in his arms and didn't let me fall. King Maddox quickly transformed into a large, ferocious wolf and ran out of the throne room towards the forest, probably to look for her.

"Are you alright?" Emrich cared.

There was a purple bruise around my neck and my throat hurt, but I was alive. "I was so scared..." I cried, my voice hoarse.

Emrich hugged me tightly. "I'm sorry I didn't get here in time, but this will never happen again."

I laid my head on his chest and closed my eyes as I cried. At least with Emrich I could feel protected and, above all, loved.

Hecate POVThe great hall had been transformed into something out of a dream.Thousands of candles floated above the guests, their flames casting a warm golden glow over the scene below. Garlands of early spring flowers draped the walls, their petals pale pink and white, their fragrance mixing with the scent of perfume and wine. The long tables groaned under the weight of silver platters and crystal goblets, and the musicians in the corner played a melody that seemed to make the very stones hum.The Spring Festival had begun.I stood near the edge of the hall, a glass of wine in my hand, watching the crowd swirl before me. Nobles from all seven packs mingled and laughed, their voices rising and falling in a symphony of celebration. Fire dancers twirled near the far wall, their torches painting arcs of orange against the velvet darkness.I kept to the shadows, as I always did. An observer. A ghost. And then I saw him.Maddox stood near the center of the hall, surrounded by a cluster o

  • The Cursed Alpha’s Only Mate   Chapter 61: Fears

Hecate POVThe castle was transforming.Every corridor hummed with activity, servants rushing past with armloads of silk and garlands of early spring flowers. The great hall had been emptied of its usual furniture, replaced by long tables draped in white linen and laden with silver candelabras. Banners bearing the Emberclaw sigil hung from the rafters, their crimson fabric rippling in the breeze from the open windows. The Spring Festival was almost upon us.Nobles had begun arriving from every corner of the Seven Packs. Carriages lined the courtyard, their horses stamping impatiently in the cold. I had glimpsed unfamiliar faces in the corridors, lords and ladies dressed in their finest, their eyes bright with anticipation. The young ones spoke in excited whispers about the sacred night, the night when the Moon Goddess would descend and form new mate bonds, tying souls together for eternity.I kept my head down and my hood up, avoiding the crowds, avoiding the questions. I was the qu

Third POVThe doors to Luna Nyra's chambers slammed against the stone walls, the sound echoing through the suite like thunder. Elsie stood in the doorway, her chest heaving, her green eyes blazing with fury. Her red hair, usually so carefully arranged, had come loose from its braid, falling in wild waves around her pale face.Nyra did not flinch. She lay on the massage table in the center of the room, her robe draped over her thin shoulders, her eyes closed in languid relaxation. Two maids worked on her legs, kneading the muscles with practiced hands, their movements slow and rhythmic. The fire crackled in the hearth, and the scent of lavender oil hung heavy in the air."I thought I heard a storm approaching," Nyra said, her voice light, amused. "But it is only my daughter."Elsie stepped forward, her boots clicking on the polished floor. "Do not mock me, Mother. Not today."Nyra opened one eye, studying her daughter over the rim of her own shoulder. "Why so dramatic? Has someone died

  • The Cursed Alpha’s Only Mate   Chapter 59: Elsie

Elsie POVThe Midnight Pack's manor rose from the frozen earth like a wound in the landscape, all black stone and sharp angles, its towers clawing at the grey sky. Elsie had grown up within these walls, had learned to walk on these cold floors, had learned to read in the dim light that filtered through the narrow windows. She knew every shadow, every secret, every whispered conversation that echoed through the corridors at night. The manor was not a place of warmth. It was not a home, not in the way other packs understood the word. It was a fortress. A sanctuary. A prison, depending on who was asking.Tonight, it was all three.Elsie sat at the vanity in her chambers, a heavy leather bound book open before her, its pages filled with cramped handwriting and dark diagrams. The text was ancient, written in a language that had died out centuries before her grandmother was born. She could read it fluently. Her mother had made sure of that.Zuri stood behind her, the silver handled brush m

  • The Cursed Alpha’s Only Mate   Chapter 58: The Kind of Woman

Hecate POVThe morning light filtered through the curtains, pale and golden, painting the room in soft warmth. I woke slowly, my body still heavy with sleep, and felt the weight of Maddox's arm draped across my waist. His chest was pressed against my back, his breath warm on my neck, and his legs were tangled with mine beneath the sheets. He was already awake.I could tell by the way his fingers traced lazy patterns on my hip, by the way his nose nuzzled into my hair, by the soft contented sigh that escaped his lips when he realized I was stirring."Good morning," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep.I smiled, my eyes still closed. "Good morning, my king."He pulled me closer, wrapping both arms around me, holding me as if he was afraid I might disappear. His lips brushed against my shoulder, then my neck, then the curve of my jaw. Each touch was soft, unhurried, reverent."I do not want to let you go," he said."Then do not."He turned me gently in his arms so that I faced him.

  • The Cursed Alpha’s Only Mate   Chapter 57: Trough Love and Revenge

Hecate POVThe letters were hidden in the folds of my robe, pressed against my stomach, warm from my body heat. Three sheets of parchment, each one sealed with black wax and the imprint of a crescent moon. Luna Nyra's personal seal. The symbol of the Midnight Pack's true power.Finnick had not risked coming to Emberclaw just to see me. He had not braved the rogue forest and the border patrols and the ever present threat of discovery simply to hold me in a back room and remind me of summers long past. He had come because Nyra had sent him. Because Nyra had words for me. Because Nyra's plans were always moving, always shifting, always reaching toward a future that only she could see.I had not opened the letters yet. I was saving them for the privacy of my studio, for the quiet hours when the castle slept and no one watched. But I knew what they would say. Nyra was growing impatient. The game had been running for months, and she wanted results. She wanted Maddox weakened, his court fr
