Chapter 4

Iris
The Moonlight Trials made all of us retake the old succession qualifying test.

The scent of a missing pup was scattered through the forest.

Each participant had a limited time to choose a route, spot false tracks, and plan an escape.

Ryan's place in the final trials depended on this round.

No one dared treat it like a game.

Vera seemed calm at first.

She even volunteered to lead.

"I'll take the east side."

Someone nodded right away.

"Tracking was always your best event."

Vera smiled.

But once we entered the woods, she slowed more and more.

At the first fork, she said the pup had gone north.

Wrong.

At the second, the scents of wild animals and adult wolves crossed. She hesitated for a long time, then chose east.

Wrong again.

The others began to look at her differently.

"Vera, are you okay?"

She had gone pale.

"The earlier trials must have thrown me off."

Then she looked at Ryan.

Before, all she had to do was look a little unwell and Ryan would take care of her first.

This time, Ryan asked only one question.

"Can you keep going?"

Vera bit her lip.

"Yes."

"Then keep going."

He turned and walked away.

She nearly lost control of her expression.

Ryan quickly found the right direction for the rest of the test.

To make sure everyone could pass, he gave the team only the basic safe route. He didn't make anyone's individual choices for them.

Vera barely finished the course.

At the scoring, moonlight displayed two sets of results.

This time, she finished near the bottom.

But the historical record from twelve years ago showed a perfect score.

Someone stared.

"That can't be right."

"The difference is way too big."

The stone wall revealed the sealed original tracking map.

One glance was enough for me to recognize it.

Every turn, every route mark, even the small X drawn before a dead end was mine.

Someone enlarged the map.

"Aren't those the same marks Erin just used?"

They pulled up another old record.

It said that I had failed a test in another area at the very same time.

Ryan suddenly asked a question.

"How far apart are the two areas?"

The trial keeper answered at once.

"At a normal pace, at least forty minutes."

"And the times?"

"They overlap exactly."

The hall went completely silent.

No one could be in two places at once.

The answer was right in front of them.

I was the one who had earned Vera's perfect score back then.

My own so-called failure existed only to make my name look worthless.

Someone swore under their breath.

"So all these years, when we said Erin was useless..."

They couldn't finish.

I didn't feel much of anything.

Once you've died, insults don't matter as much.

Vera's eyes filled with tears.

"I admit I asked Erin for help a few times."

"But I worked hard after that. I stayed beside Ryan through all those trials and never held him back."

She turned to Ryan.

"You know that."

Ryan didn't deny it.

"What happened later is a separate matter."

His voice was calm.

"We're investigating what happened twelve years ago."

Vera stared at him.

Ryan looked back at the overlapping records.

"Keep searching."

"Every overlap. Don't miss a single one."

For the first time, Vera looked truly afraid.

The enemy pack attacked the sanctuary's relocation convoy. The instant howls rose ahead of us and behind us, I knew this wasn't a chance clash. They knew our route.Mara rode in the middle vehicle with the pups.I had barely jumped down when Ryan rushed over from the other side."North!"He shouted at me.Three months earlier, he had inexplicably made his people walk every evacuation route again.Back then, I'd teased him for fussing over nothing. Now the backup route took us around the main ambush.Half the guards broke off to lead the pups to safety. The enemy pack charged from the trees.Chaos erupted.Someone set fire to the dry grass beside the road, and smoke rolled over the convoy. The instant I smelled it, the world doubled. For one heartbeat I was still standing beside the overturned vehicle. For the next, I was eighteen again inside a black corridor with fire crawling across the ceiling.A pup screamed somewhere to my left. There were no pups there. The cry belonged to anothe

After Ryan was recognized as the High Alpha's blood heir, Vera stayed quiet for a long time.I thought she'd finally given up.Then the border patrol summoned me from the training grounds."Someone crossed the territory line carrying your scent."I stared at them."When?""Last night.""I was at the sanctuary last night."The patrol wolf looked uncomfortable."But your scent is on the marker."Colluding with an enemy pack.Few accusations were more serious.Especially when an enemy pack had tested the northern border only days ago.Word spread quickly.People were already looking at me differently.Vera stood in the crowd, her face full of concern."Could Erin have gone out for medicine and crossed the line by mistake?""If it's only a misunderstanding, I'm sure we can explain it."She sounded as if she were defending me.But by saying I'd "crossed by mistake," she had already accepted that the scent was mine.I was about to answer when Ryan walked up behind me."Check the records."Ve

Three days later, Ryan went to the High Alpha's central territory on his own.By the time he returned, the entire border knew one thing. He wasn't a lone wolf with no past.He was the missing blood heir the Blackwood line had spent more than a decade searching for. When the news reached the sanctuary, I was changing a pup's bandage.Mara called me from the doorway."Erin, come outside."I stepped out and found Ryan standing in the center of the yard.Members of the Blackwood line stood behind him.He was still wearing his old coat. But everyone looked at him differently now.I walked over and had to ask."Is it true?""Yeah.""Why did you suddenly decide to investigate?"Ryan was quiet for a moment."I used to think it didn't matter.""And now?""Now I think some things are better confirmed early."I had no idea what he meant. The day after his identity was confirmed, succession qualifying registrations reopened for young wolves.I hadn't planned to enter. The sanctuary kept me busy, a

When I woke, I was in the woods behind the sanctuary, dressing a deer I'd just hunted. The old leather cord was still around my wrist.I stared at it for two seconds, with no idea why my heart was suddenly racing.Quick footsteps sounded behind me.I turned.Ryan stood a short distance away.He was frighteningly pale.As if he'd just crawled out of a fire."What's wrong?"By the time I finished asking, he'd already taken two steps toward me.He moved so quickly that I thought he was going to hug me.But with one step between us, he stopped.Even his wolf forced itself to stop behind him.The black wolf that normally ignored everyone stared at me, its ears dipped low. It wanted to come closer but seemed afraid of scaring me.Now I was even more confused."Ryan?"He looked at me for a long time."Do you have an assignment today?""Yeah."I shook the game in my hand."Already finished."He came over and took the heaviest half from me."Are you hurt?""No.""Are you sure?"I looked myself

The final scene of the Moonlight Trials was a cemetery. The temperature in the hall seemed to fall before the grave appeared.Moonlight spread across the stone floor and turned into long, wet grass. A row of headstones rose out of the white haze one by one.My grave stood at the far edge.No pack crest marked it.No record said that I had carried pups through fire or dragged the High Alpha's heir out of a burning building.Only my name and a date.Twelve years of rain had darkened the letters. Moss filled the cuts in the stone.Ryan had never visited once.He had believed a traitor was buried there. His wolf moved before he did.The black shadow crossed the cemetery and stopped at my grave. It sniffed the cold stone, then the grass, then the earth at the base as if some part of it still expected to find my scent beneath twelve years of dirt.A low whine came from its throat. Then it began to dig.Its claws tore through wet soil and roots. It kept digging until the ends of the shadowed
