Chapter 3 Nothing Left to Lose

Author: Bathed in Gold
By the time the crowd around the lake thinned, I could finally get to my feet. I carefully tested the ankle I'd twisted in the fall, but I'd barely taken two steps when an ice-cold hand grabbed my arm.

"Emma, what the hell are you trying to do?"

I ignored Jake and glanced around, still trying to figure out how I could leave this world for good.

The lake was clearly out of the question.

Someone would just come and drag me out again, and I might end up getting them killed in the process. The nearby buildings weren't tall enough either, and banging my head against a wall probably wouldn't work.

"Emma! I'm talking to you!"

My silence only made Jake angrier.

"What the hell do you want from us?" He snapped. "Did you think jumping into that lake would scare us? Listen to me, Emma. Threatening to kill yourself won't get you anywhere! If you think we're going to give you whatever you want just because you pulled a stunt like that, think again!"

His shouting made my ears ring, but I almost laughed.

I thought, 'Funny how that works. When someone doesn't love you, they could see you hanging from a noose and still convince themselves you're just playing on a swing.'

I was still lost in thought when Jake grabbed my wrist and dragged me toward his car.

He was soaked, his lips purple from the cold, but he seemed not to notice. Even after getting behind the wheel, he kept one hand on it and the other clasped tightly around my wrist.

I tried to pull free. "Let go."

He ignored me and tightened his grip instead.

"Emma, Mom and Dad are waiting for us at home," he said. "Remember how you always wanted to go to the theme park? I'll book the tickets in a few days. We can all go together, just like you wanted."

I gave him a faint smile. "Is Olivia coming?"

He fell silent, his fingers tightening around my wrist. After a few seconds, he finally answered, "I'll make sure she behaves."

I couldn't help but laugh.

Jake frowned. "Emma, why do you always have to make everything a competition with Olivia? You—"

I didn't let him finish. Instead, I lunged across the center console and grabbed the steering wheel.

The car swerved across the empty road, sending Jake into a panic. "Emma! Have you lost your mind? You're going to get us killed!"

That was kind of the point.

If we crashed, it would all finally be over. Dying with Jake hadn't been part of my plan, but by then, I didn't care.

I tightened my grip and yanked the steering wheel as hard as I could.

The car fishtailed violently, veered right, and slammed into the landscaped median. Tires screeched on the pavement, and for a moment, everything went still.

Unfortunately, Jake had managed to slam on the brakes just in time. The impact wasn't even strong enough to set off the airbags.

I sat there for a moment, dizzy from the abrupt stop, before letting out a disappointed sigh. It was a shame that I was still alive.

I reached for the door handle, but it was locked.

Beside me, Jake sat slumped in the driver's seat, his face ghostly pale. He remained still for a long moment before slowly turning to look at me, his eyes bloodshot and his expression disbelieving.

"You really want to die that badly?" His voice was so hoarse. He gulped, struggling to speak. "Even if it means taking me with you?"

I rubbed my aching head without even looking at him. "Jake, why couldn't you have just drowned in that lake?"

  • The Daughter They Loved Too Late   Chapter 11 A Lifetime of Happiness

Olivia had to be out of her mind to believe I was anything like her. I would never throw myself into danger just to be seen by people who never cared about me in the first place. I tightened my grip on the knife handle and looked her straight in the eye. "Put the knife down and get the hell out, or we can both die right here." At that moment, the hospital room door slammed open, and a crowd flooded in. The instant they saw the knife pressed to Olivia's throat, the room exploded into chaos, voices colliding in a storm of shouts. "Emma! What the hell are you doing?" Olivia's grip slipped away instantly. In a heartbeat, she transformed from menacing to terrified, her whole body shaking as tears poured down her cheeks. "Mom! Dad!" she cried. "Emma!" Maria screamed, rushing toward us with her face drained of color. "Let Olivia go!" Joe was just as frantic, though his fear came out as anger. "Emma, put that knife down! Have you completely lost your mind?" Jake stood rooted

The Morgan family's picture-perfect life had been falling apart ever since I stopped letting them use me as their punching bag.For years, whenever something went wrong, I took the blame. But now that I refused to play along, the problems they'd ignored for years were finally catching up with them.My parents were miserable, Jake had practically shut himself away from the world, and Jude wasn't doing much better. None of them seemed to know how to handle what was happening, and the family they'd worked so hard to keep together was slowly falling apart. It was only a matter of time before Olivia came looking for me.When she finally appeared in my hospital room, her face was pale, and a thick white bandage encased her wrist. Still, she greeted me with the same sweet smile she'd always worn whenever she wanted to seem innocent."Hey, Emma."I didn't respond. I just wat

  • The Daughter They Loved Too Late   Chapter 9 Why Should I Pay for Your Guilt?

Jake must have told everyone what I'd said to him, because Jude showed up at my hospital room that very evening. It was the first time he'd come to see me in ages, and judging by the large bloodstains on his clothes, he'd probably come straight from Olivia's side.He stood in the doorway for a moment, staring at me with an expression I couldn't quite read. Then, without even asking how I was doing, he said, "I know Olivia made mistakes, but she almost died this time. Isn't that enough? Hasn't she paid the price for it all?"I didn't bother answering. I simply grabbed the first thing I could reach on my bedside table and hurled it at him. When he didn't move, I grabbed something else and threw that, too.Jude didn't try to dodge or protect himself. He just stood there while I threw one thing after another until nothing was left within reach.…By then, blood was dripping from his nose. He slowly raised a hand to wipe it away, stared at the red smear on his palm, then looked bac

After everything that happened, my family seemed terrified that I might try to end my life again. They removed every sharp object from my hospital room, and even the windows were locked shut.Jake and my parents visited me every day.All three had lost a noticeable amount of weight. Judging by their exhausted faces, none of them slept well.I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for them, though. Most of the time, I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep, ignoring them until they finally left.Whenever one of them tried to talk to me, I'd open my eyes, look straight at them, and ask them to let me die. After hearing the same request again and again, they eventually stopped trying to start conversations. Instead, they sat quietly beside my bed, occasionally glancing at me as if they had something to say but feared what I might say in return.I preferred it that way anyway because we had nothing left to talk about.…One afternoon, Jake came to visit me alone. He looked more exhau

  • The Daughter They Loved Too Late   Chapter 7 The Daughter They Never Chose

I'd always known I could never compete with Olivia for my biological parents' love. Looking back, I think I understood that from the very first day we met.I still remembered coming home from the scrapyard that afternoon with a filthy sack of recyclables slung over my shoulder. As I approached our rundown street, I noticed a sleek luxury car parked near the entrance. It looked completely out of place among the shabby buildings, and the people standing beside it looked just as out of place. They were all dressed in expensive clothes and seemed to be talking with the nosiest woman in our neighborhood. I wasn't especially interested in their conversation, but as I approached, she spotted me and immediately pointed me out."That's her! That's Emma Porter!" she announced. "I'm telling you, that girl's a real piece of work. Always scheming, that one."Everyone turned to look at me, and I suddenly became painfully aware of the dirt under my fingernails and the sour stench of garbage clin
