Chapter 2

Author: Etheral Selene
Henry went quiet. Then, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and let it go.

A second later, mine rang too. It was a number I didn't recognize.

I picked up, and Vera's soft, fragile voice came through the other end, "Ms. Whitaker, it's Vera. I know you're with Henry right now. Could I just say a few words to you?"

I put it on speaker and set the phone on the table.

"Ms. Whitaker, this is all my fault, every last bit of it." Her voice was thick with tears but never grating, the kind of crying designed to make people feel sorry for her.

"I wasn't capable enough to take care of Aiden on my own, so I swallowed my pride and came back to ask Henry for help. He's a good man. He only did it because he felt sorry for the child. Please don't blame him."

She drew a shaky breath. "If you can't accept us being here, I'll take Aiden and leave right now. Even if we die out there, we won't be a burden to either of you."

Then, through the speaker, came the sound of a child coughing, followed by Vera's panicked voice trying to soothe him.

Henry's expression changed completely. He snatched my phone off the table and shouted into it, "Vera, is Aiden having another attack? Don't move him. The medication is in the cabinet. I'm on my way!"

He hung up and looked at me, his face tight with panic, his eyes begging. "Hazel, his asthma is flaring up. This could kill him. I need to go over there. We can talk about everything when we get home, okay?"

I looked at the man standing in front of me. One second he was confessing and apologizing, and the next, the moment he heard something was wrong over there, he was already gone in his head.

I knew him too well. Vera didn't need to throw tantrums or flaunt herself in my face. All she had to do was show him how helpless she was, and she had him wrapped around her finger.

"Go." I leaned back in my chair, my expression flat.

"But Henry, the second you walk out that door, we're done."

Henry faltered mid-step. He looked at me, torn, but in the end he clenched his jaw. "Hazel, this is a child's life. I can't just do nothing."

He left without looking back.

I watched him go, then picked up the coffee in front of me. It had gone cold. I drained it in one swallow, and the bitterness spread through my entire mouth.

I took out my phone and called Henry's father, Edmund Lancaster. "Dad, I'm in the next city over. I thought I'd come see you."

I went straight to the Lancaster family's academic exchange center in the neighboring city. Edmund was in the middle of overseeing a research project when I arrived, and he didn't seem the least bit surprised to see me.

He cleared the office until it was just the two of us.

"Hazel, you look terrible." He studied me over the rim of his coffee cup with sharp, knowing eyes.

"You already knew, didn't you, Dad?" I got right to the point.

"Vera had a child. She's living in a Lancaster-owned apartment, spending Henry's money. You have eyes and ears all over the academic world and Henry's circles. There's no way you didn't know."

His hand paused on the coffee cup, and he let out a sigh. "Henry is foolish and too soft-hearted."

He set the cup down. "I'm aware of the boy. He may be born out of wedlock, but he still has Lancaster blood. The child is in poor health, and it's only natural for Henry to look after him."

Henry's hands trembled as he opened the report. The conclusion was printed in bold."Biological paternity excluded.""No. That's not possible." Henry sank to the floor, the veins in his hands bulging as he gripped the paper. "Vera, what the hell is this? You told me he was mine!"Vera crumpled where she stood, her face ashen. Aiden cried out, clinging to her, "Mommy, I want my real daddy! I don't want this mean man!"Even I was stunned, sitting in my wheelchair. All of this chaos, everything that had been destroyed, and it was all over a child that was never even his.Henry lunged at Vera and wrapped his hands around her throat, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You liar! You killed my baby! You ruined my entire life!"Edmund watched it all with cold detachment, only waving for the bodyguards to pull Henry off once he had nearly choked the life out of her."Take that woman and the boy away."Vera was dragged out screaming, her cries fading down the hall.Henry collapsed to his

Henry's face was drained of color. "Vera didn't do it on purpose. You can't just do this out of spite! If we get divorced, then what happens to everything under my name?"Vera clung to Henry's side and sobbed even harder, "Ms. Whitaker, I know you hate me. As long as you're willing to forgive Henry and stay married, I'll take Aiden and leave right now. I'll never come back."Looking at the scene playing out in front of me, all I felt was how absurd it was. The woman who had tried to kill my baby was playing the victim, I was being treated like the aggressor, and Henry was trying to hold everything together for the sake of appearances."If we can't settle this here, we'll settle it in court."Edmund came down the staircase, leaning on his cane. His expression was terrifyingly dark, and behind him trailed the house manager, Morris Lincoln, and several bodyguards in black. The entire room fell silent, save for Vera's sniffling."Dad, talk some sense into Hazel. She's insisting on a d

When I opened my eyes again, I had been moved from the ICU to a regular room. The hollow, gutted feeling in my abdomen told me everything I needed to know without having to reach down and check.Henry was sitting at the edge of the bed, his eyes shot through with red. The moment he saw me stir, he scrambled closer."Hazel, you're awake. Here, drink some water."I turned my head away. "The baby's gone, isn't it?"Henry's hand froze in midair, and his eyes grew even redder. He set the cup down and pressed his hands against his face. "I'm sorry. Hazel, I'm so sorry. We just weren't meant to have this child."I turned back and locked my eyes on his. "Henry, Vera pushed me."Henry's entire body flinched. He looked at me, and the struggle in his eyes was plain as day."Vera said you two were arguing, and you tried to pull away from her and lost your footing. She tried to catch you, but she couldn't hold on. The back of her hand is all scratched up from you grabbing at her."He swallo

Not long after Edmund left, Henry and the others came back into the room. Without warning, Aiden hurled the toy car he'd been hiding in his hand straight at my stomach."You're a bad lady, and the thing in your belly is bad too!"Pain shot through my abdomen, but I didn't make a sound. I just looked at the three of them coldly, and Henry instinctively pulled Aiden behind him again."He's just a kid. He doesn't know any better. Don't hold it against him."I smiled. Like mother, like son.Aiden's breathing suddenly became labored, and his heart condition flared up. Henry and Vera shouted for a doctor in a panic and got him admitted to a room. That same night, he was moved to the ICU, and Henry refused to leave his side.Early the next morning, while Henry was pulled away by Aiden's attending physician, I slipped out of my room alone. I had already booked a procedure at a different private hospital. I didn't want anyone from the Lancaster family having a say over what happened to my

Henry stood frozen in place, cold sweat running down his face. He couldn't choose, and he knew it."Henry." Vera had appeared in the doorway at some point, holding Aiden by the hand. Her eyes were brimming with tears that never quite fell."Don't fight with Ms. Whitaker because of me."She let go of the boy's hand and sank to the floor. "Ms. Whitaker, I know you hate me. If you'll just keep this baby, I'll die if that's what it takes. It doesn't matter."The moment the words left her mouth, she lunged toward the window."Vera!" Henry went white. He didn't even think. He threw himself at her and caught her before she got there."Are you out of your mind? We're over a dozen floors up!""Just let me die! I don't want to make things harder for you, and I don't want to be the one who destroyed someone's family." Vera collapsed against his chest, sobbing like her heart was being torn out.Aiden burst into tears too, and the room dissolved into chaos."Are you all done?" Edmund appea

Yes, I had carried a child too, even if I never got to bring it into the world. But I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for Vera. At the end of the day, she was the one who had come in between someone else's marriage."Hazel, Aiden's surgery is scheduled for next week." Henry gritted his teeth. "But the surgery and the follow-up treatment are going to cost a lot of money."I looked up at him. "And?""I want to put your research project on hold for now and redirect the funding toward Aiden's treatment." Henry wouldn't meet my eyes. "This is a matter of life and death."That project was something I had poured three months of late nights into securing. My whole body started to shake."Henry, do you have any idea what shelving that project means? It means months of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain.""Money can be gained back, but I can't sit here and watch my son die!" Henry shouted."Enough!"My vision went dark. It felt like a boulder was pressing down
