Chapter 3

Author: Etheral Selene
"Only natural?" I let out a cold laugh. "Then, what about the agreement Henry and I signed? Is that just a worthless piece of paper?"

"Hazel!" Edmund's tone sharpened. "You are the lady of this family. You need to think long-term. As long as that woman doesn't set foot in this house and doesn't threaten your position, what's the harm in giving Henry a little room to breathe out there?

"Not to mention…"

His gaze drifted down to my flat stomach, and the implication was impossible to miss.

"It's been five years, and you still haven't given us anything. The Lancasters need an heir. Henry having a son out there is him thinking of the family's future."

A chill ran through my entire body. In their eyes, my inability to have children was my greatest failing. Henry's cheating was just him being soft-hearted, the illegitimate son was insurance for the family line, and my anger was me being petty and short-sighted.

"What if I said I want a divorce?" I stared Edmund down.

His expression darkened, and he slammed his coffee cup on the desk. "Don't be ridiculous! You think divorce is some kind of game? The stock price of our research commercialization firm can't take that kind of upheaval right now."

He narrowed his eyes. "That agreement you're holding is as much a leash as it is a safety net. You want to strip Henry of everything, drag his name through the mud, and just walk away? It's not that simple."

I clenched my fists so hard my nails bit into my palms. There was no warmth in this family, only calculations.

A knock came at the office door. An assistant stepped in, looking visibly uncomfortable. "Professor Lancaster, your son is here. He brought the child."

Henry walked in right behind him, carrying Aiden in his arms, with Vera trailing timidly behind.

"Dad." Henry couldn't even bring himself to look at me. He carried the boy straight over to Edmund. "Aiden heard his grandpa was here and insisted on coming to see you."

Aiden's face was pale, but he still managed to say sweetly, "Hi, Grandpa."

The tension on Edmund's face melted instantly. "What a good boy."

He reached out and ruffled the child's hair.

Vera stood in the corner and snuck a glance at me. The look in her eyes didn't match the fragile act at all. There was a flicker of triumph in it.

As long as Edmund accepted Aiden as his grandson, Vera didn't even need to marry into the family to be considered its greatest benefactor. And I'd be the one pushed out sooner or later.

Henry looked at me with a new edge of confidence. "Hazel, Dad already said it himself. Just think of it as doing this for the family."

The nausea I'd been holding down surged up all at once. I clamped a hand over my mouth and rushed to the bathroom, where I threw up until the room was spinning.

By the time I came back, Vera was already sobbing in front of me. "Ms. Whitaker, I know I shouldn't have come back, but Aiden needs heart surgery too. The best specialist in the country is right here in this city. I only came back to save my son's life."

She looked up at me, her face a portrait of helplessness. "The moment Aiden's surgery is a success, I'll take him and go. I'll stay out of your sight for good.

"Ms. Whitaker, you're a woman too. You've carried a child of your own. Please, have some mercy on a mother's heart."

Henry's hands trembled as he opened the report. The conclusion was printed in bold."Biological paternity excluded.""No. That's not possible." Henry sank to the floor, the veins in his hands bulging as he gripped the paper. "Vera, what the hell is this? You told me he was mine!"Vera crumpled where she stood, her face ashen. Aiden cried out, clinging to her, "Mommy, I want my real daddy! I don't want this mean man!"Even I was stunned, sitting in my wheelchair. All of this chaos, everything that had been destroyed, and it was all over a child that was never even his.Henry lunged at Vera and wrapped his hands around her throat, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You liar! You killed my baby! You ruined my entire life!"Edmund watched it all with cold detachment, only waving for the bodyguards to pull Henry off once he had nearly choked the life out of her."Take that woman and the boy away."Vera was dragged out screaming, her cries fading down the hall.Henry collapsed to his

Henry's face was drained of color. "Vera didn't do it on purpose. You can't just do this out of spite! If we get divorced, then what happens to everything under my name?"Vera clung to Henry's side and sobbed even harder, "Ms. Whitaker, I know you hate me. As long as you're willing to forgive Henry and stay married, I'll take Aiden and leave right now. I'll never come back."Looking at the scene playing out in front of me, all I felt was how absurd it was. The woman who had tried to kill my baby was playing the victim, I was being treated like the aggressor, and Henry was trying to hold everything together for the sake of appearances."If we can't settle this here, we'll settle it in court."Edmund came down the staircase, leaning on his cane. His expression was terrifyingly dark, and behind him trailed the house manager, Morris Lincoln, and several bodyguards in black. The entire room fell silent, save for Vera's sniffling."Dad, talk some sense into Hazel. She's insisting on a d

When I opened my eyes again, I had been moved from the ICU to a regular room. The hollow, gutted feeling in my abdomen told me everything I needed to know without having to reach down and check.Henry was sitting at the edge of the bed, his eyes shot through with red. The moment he saw me stir, he scrambled closer."Hazel, you're awake. Here, drink some water."I turned my head away. "The baby's gone, isn't it?"Henry's hand froze in midair, and his eyes grew even redder. He set the cup down and pressed his hands against his face. "I'm sorry. Hazel, I'm so sorry. We just weren't meant to have this child."I turned back and locked my eyes on his. "Henry, Vera pushed me."Henry's entire body flinched. He looked at me, and the struggle in his eyes was plain as day."Vera said you two were arguing, and you tried to pull away from her and lost your footing. She tried to catch you, but she couldn't hold on. The back of her hand is all scratched up from you grabbing at her."He swallo

Not long after Edmund left, Henry and the others came back into the room. Without warning, Aiden hurled the toy car he'd been hiding in his hand straight at my stomach."You're a bad lady, and the thing in your belly is bad too!"Pain shot through my abdomen, but I didn't make a sound. I just looked at the three of them coldly, and Henry instinctively pulled Aiden behind him again."He's just a kid. He doesn't know any better. Don't hold it against him."I smiled. Like mother, like son.Aiden's breathing suddenly became labored, and his heart condition flared up. Henry and Vera shouted for a doctor in a panic and got him admitted to a room. That same night, he was moved to the ICU, and Henry refused to leave his side.Early the next morning, while Henry was pulled away by Aiden's attending physician, I slipped out of my room alone. I had already booked a procedure at a different private hospital. I didn't want anyone from the Lancaster family having a say over what happened to my

Henry stood frozen in place, cold sweat running down his face. He couldn't choose, and he knew it."Henry." Vera had appeared in the doorway at some point, holding Aiden by the hand. Her eyes were brimming with tears that never quite fell."Don't fight with Ms. Whitaker because of me."She let go of the boy's hand and sank to the floor. "Ms. Whitaker, I know you hate me. If you'll just keep this baby, I'll die if that's what it takes. It doesn't matter."The moment the words left her mouth, she lunged toward the window."Vera!" Henry went white. He didn't even think. He threw himself at her and caught her before she got there."Are you out of your mind? We're over a dozen floors up!""Just let me die! I don't want to make things harder for you, and I don't want to be the one who destroyed someone's family." Vera collapsed against his chest, sobbing like her heart was being torn out.Aiden burst into tears too, and the room dissolved into chaos."Are you all done?" Edmund appea

Yes, I had carried a child too, even if I never got to bring it into the world. But I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for Vera. At the end of the day, she was the one who had come in between someone else's marriage."Hazel, Aiden's surgery is scheduled for next week." Henry gritted his teeth. "But the surgery and the follow-up treatment are going to cost a lot of money."I looked up at him. "And?""I want to put your research project on hold for now and redirect the funding toward Aiden's treatment." Henry wouldn't meet my eyes. "This is a matter of life and death."That project was something I had poured three months of late nights into securing. My whole body started to shake."Henry, do you have any idea what shelving that project means? It means months of work and hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain.""Money can be gained back, but I can't sit here and watch my son die!" Henry shouted."Enough!"My vision went dark. It felt like a boulder was pressing down
