Chapter 2

مؤلف: Helen
"Exactly what I said."

Lucas slipped the lighter back into his pocket with deliberate ease.

"Alex handed you over to me to take the fall. But I've changed my mind. Keeping a dog that knows how to bite might be a lot more interesting."

I stared at him, every nerve on edge, my mind racing.

Lucas had a reputation throughout New York's upper crust for being completely unpredictable. He did whatever amused him, with no rules and no limits.

"What do you want from me?" I swallowed my humiliation and asked, my voice hoarse.

"Simple." Lucas gripped my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. "From this moment on, you belong to me.

"So long as you do exactly what I say, I'll hire the best criminal defense lawyer in New York to clear your name. I'll also assume full financial responsibility for your grandmother's care and make sure she remains at the hospital."

I had no choice.

My grandmother was the only family I had left. I couldn't watch them throw her out of the hospital.

"Fine. I'll do it."

A satisfied smile crossed Lucas's face. He let go of my chin and told the driver to turn the car around.

Half an hour later, we pulled into the underground parking garage at Saint Mary's Medical Center.

The moment the bodyguard unbound my wrists, I bolted for the elevator and headed straight for the private intensive care floor where my grandmother was staying.

I raced to my grandmother's room, breathless. When I got there, several orderlies were already packing up her belongings.

My grandmother lay on a transport gurney in the hallway, an oxygen mask covering her face, weak and helpless.

"What are you doing? Who permitted you to touch my grandmother?"

I rushed over and shoved away the nurse who was about to disconnect her IV and switch her to transport equipment.

"Well, well, if it isn't Ms. Grant. Why haven't the investigators taken you away yet?"

A sugary voice drifted out of the room.

Claire stepped out in a tailored designer suit and four-inch heels, carrying herself as if she owned the entire hospital.

Alex followed close behind, carefully holding a thermos for her.

"Claire, watch your step." His voice was impossibly gentle.

The instant he looked at me, the warmth vanished from his eyes.

"Eileen, why are you here? Why haven't you turned yourself in yet?!"

I planted myself in front of the gurney, pointing at them in fury.

"Alex, you promised me! You said that if I cooperated, you wouldn't touch my grandmother!"

"I did." Alex gave a cold smile. "But Claire felt dizzy today, and she doesn't like the emergency observation ward. This is the quietest private suite on the floor, and it overlooks Central Park.

"Your grandmother has been in a coma for years. Whether she's here or in a regular ward makes no difference. Let Claire use the room for one night isn't exactly asking much, is it?"

I stared at him, too stunned to believe what I was hearing.

"Claire's just dizzy. My grandma is on respiratory support and requires continuous monitoring. You're seriously going to move her before she's even been medically cleared, just because Claire feels a little uncomfortable?"

Claire immediately tucked herself against Alex, looking every bit the helpless victim.

"Eileen is so mean. I just thought it was sunny and quiet here. I figured I'd recover faster here. I never hurt her grandmother."

Alex wrapped an arm around her protectively before shooting me a murderous glare.

"Eileen, raise your voice at Claire one more time and see what happens. Security! Get this lunatic out of here!"

Several big and burly security guards closed in immediately.

I watched them reach for my grandmother's gurney and something inside me broke. I bowed at Alex.

"Mr. Walker... please. My grandmother can't be moved without her attending physician's approval! Just let her stay, and I'll go to the investigators now. I'll tell them whatever you want."

I bowed deeply, my forehead nearly level with my knees.

Alex looked down at me as if I were something beneath him.

"So now you know how to beg. Too late."

He kicked me aside, his voice icy-cold.

"Move her to the general ward. Give her the lowest level of care. As for you, Eileen, this is what happens when you don't do as you're told."

Just as the security guards were about to lay their hands on my grandmother's gurney, a deep voice rang out from the far end of the corridor.

"Who has the nerve to lay a hand on what's mine?"

One year later.Dawn Law Firm had become one of the most prestigious law firms in New York.As for me, I was no longer the assistant everyone pushed around. I had become Eileen Grant, the attorney everyone looked up to.Today was my grandmother's 80th birthday.Lucas had reserved one of Manhattan's finest hotels to host a lavish birthday party in her honor. The banquet hall was packed with guests dressed to the nines. The clink of champagne glasses filled the air.My grandmother sat in her wheelchair. Though she was still physically frail, she looked far healthier than she had a year ago.Holding Lucas's hand, she smiled so broadly that her eyes crinkled with happiness."Lucas, now that Eileen has you, I can finally stop worrying. So, when are you two going to give me a great-grandchild?"Lucas glanced across the room at me, where I was greeting guests."Anne, we'll talk about this. For now, your job is to keep getting better. Whatever we decide, you'll be the first person we tell."I

I stepped out of the courthouse. The bright afternoon sun made me squint."Counselor, congratulations. Justice is served."A black luxury sedan was pulled over before the courthouse.Lucas leaned casually against the driver's door, a bouquet of red roses in his hands.I hurried down the steps, accepted the flowers, and breathed in their sweet fragrance."Thank you, honey."He arched a brow before slipping an arm around my waist and pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead."That's it? Just a verbal thank-you? Counselor Grant, that's a pretty stingy legal fee."I laughed and wrapped my arms around his neck."Then what kind of payment does Mr. Morrison have in mind? I've already signed myself over to you. Do you want the law firm too?"Lucas chuckled, his gaze turning deep and dangerous."I don't want the law firm. I just want you."Before I could answer, he swept me off my feet and gently settled me into the front passenger seat."Come on. There's somewhere I want to take you."The car cru

Three months later.Under my leadership, Dawn Law Firm had not only purged every last remnant of Alex's corruption but had also won several high-profile commercial cases that shook New York's elite circles.I was no longer the assistant everyone looked down on. I had become one of New York's most sought-after lawyers. And the case against Alex and Claire had finally reached its verdict. As both a victim and one of the prosecution's key witnesses, I attended the public hearing. At the defense table, Alex was almost unrecognizable. He wore a prison uniform, his head shaved close, his eyes vacant and hollow. The impeccably dressed, arrogant attorney who had once looked down on everyone was gone.Claire was in even worse shape. Word was that she couldn't handle the conditions in jail and had begun to suffer a mental breakdown. She spent most of her time muttering to herself. When the judge began reading the sentence, the courtroom fell completely silent."The defendant, Alex Walker, is fou

The handcuffs snapped shut around Alex's trembling wrists. He crumpled like a puppet with its strings cut, allowing the officers to haul him to his feet.As they led him past me, he suddenly struggled violently against their grip. His bloodshot eyes locked onto mine."Eileen! You tricked me! You've been playing me from the very beginning!"You had Lucas behind you the whole time! You could've crushed me whenever you wanted! Then why? Why pretend to be so pathetic?"You watched me strut around like some pathetic clown, and you enjoyed every second of it, didn't you?"I watched his futile outburst in silence. It stirred nothing inside me. If anything, it was a faint sense that he was pitiful."Alex, you give yourself far too much credit."My voice was calm."The reason I endured those three years was not to plot against you. I stayed because I genuinely admired you. You were my mentor. Someone I believed in."You're the one who shattered that belief. And you're the one who walked yoursel

"You... how did you find out?"I straightened up and looked down at him without a trace of emotion."Nothing stays buried forever. You really thought deleting the evidence meant I'd never find it?"I pulled a silver-encrypted drive from my pocket and waved it in front of his eyes."Alex, in these three years, how many shady cases did you hand me to handle? Did you really think I was just some idiot who fetched your coffee?"Alex's gaze was glued to the drive. Then he lunged at me like a madman."Give me that! Hand it over!"He never even got close before a bodyguard kicked him across the room. He slammed into the marble reception desk before collapsing to the floor, clutching his chest and groaning in pain.Claire's face went white as she stumbled backward."Eileen, don't you dare! I'm the daughter of Harrison Group's chairman and a senior executive! If you lay a finger on me, the board and the family lawyers will never let you get away with it!"I turned to her with a faint smile."Th

Walker Law Firm. Main Lobby.Alex paced the marble floor like a caged animal.Claire sat on the sofa, her face pale, clutching her designer handbag so tightly her knuckles had turned white."Alex, what are we going to do? Federal investigators have already seized the accounting records. If they uncover those fake books, we're both going to prison!"Alex yanked at his tie and snapped at her."Shut up! This never would've happened if you hadn't insisted on those sham lawsuits! And now that bitch Eileen's hiding behind Lucas and refuses to take the fall!"Claire's eyes reddened, and she burst into tears."Why are you yelling at me? You were more than happy to take the money! Now that everything's blowing up, suddenly it's all my fault?"As they turned on each other, the firm's automatic glass doors slid open.I walked in wearing a sharply tailored black suit and four-inch heels, my expression unreadable. A dozen bodyguards in black surrounded me.Lucas strode beside me, one hand tucked in
