Chapter 4 The Wrong Person to Offend

Auteur: Lillian Quinn
Arlo clutched his stomach, laughing so hard he nearly doubled over, his face full of mockery. "Can you come up with a more believable lie? That crappy bracelet of yours looks moldy, and you're calling it priceless?!"

The two lackeys behind him burst into harsh laughter as well. "That color looks just like a beer bottle. Did you grind it down yourself or something?"

"With how broke she looks, she probably couldn't even afford the processing fee. I bet she got it by sleeping with some old fucker!"

My clenched fist trembled slightly, my nails digging deep into my palm. It was one thing for them to act arrogantly, but now they were actually spreading disgusting rumors about a female teacher in public?

My gaze swept across their ugly, sneering faces, and I made a silent vow. I would make sure all three of them failed this semester and learned what regret really meant. As for Arlo's father, who had spoiled him rotten. Well, he'd certainly be paying his dues soon enough.

"You're university students, aren't you? Don't you have even the most basic respect for your teachers? To think you would publicly insult a female faculty member! Aren't you afraid of disgracing Saltmere University?"

Arlo's embarrassment turned into anger as he pointed at me and shouted, "Look at yourself before talking! I haven't even come for you for scaring me with your beggar of an outfit!"

I let out a cold laugh. Since when had dressing simply become a crime? The sales associates would still greet me with nothing but smiles if I walked into Hermes in my pajamas.

He pulled out his phone and made a show of dialing, his tone arrogant and threatening. "Didn't you say I was embarrassing Salt-U? I'll have my dad fire you right now! We'll see who's really disgracing the school when you're on your knees begging for mercy!"

Just as he pressed the call button, a stern voice rang out from behind us. "The class bell rang quite a while ago, and you're all still causing chaos? Do you all want to fail and retake the course?"

David Sanders quickly walked up to me, instantly switching to a respectful smile. "Ms. Tyne, the board members are waiting for you in the meeting. They asked me to come and escort you."

I gave a slight nod. "Thank you. Let's go."

Just as I was about to leave, Arlo stepped in front of me again. "Who do you think you are to attend a board meeting?"

Then, he glanced sideways at the man who had just arrived. "This old fucker isn't some actor you hired, is he?"

One of the lackeys immediately chimed in with a lewd tone, "I bet they're buddies by day and buck buddies by night. I bet only old men are fine with ugly hags like her!"

Then, the three of them erupted into shrill laughter.

David's face turned livid with anger as he stepped forward, but I raised a hand to stop him.

I slowly lifted my phone, the recording interface clearly displayed on the screen. "According to school regulation 29, insulting a teacher results in a deduction of 10 credits. Every word you just said has been recorded. It's not too late to apologize now."

The two lackeys immediately panicked, looking at Arlo in confusion.

At that moment, Arlo's phone suddenly vibrated. He glanced at it, and a vicious grin spread across his face. "My dad said he'll deal with you after the meeting!"

He waved his phone smugly. "All the teaching evaluations are in my dad's hands. Do you really think you can send that recording out? Who are you trying to scare?"

His gaze suddenly landed on the meeting booklet in my hand, a flicker of malice crossing his eyes. "Also, how dare you carry around that little booklet like a prop! Do you really think you're qualified to attend a board meeting? Fine.

"I'll take you there myself and show you what a real meeting looks like!"

I curved my lips into a faint smile. "Since you're so eager, I don't suppose it'll do any harm for you to come along."

Arlo strode ahead, his voice trembling with excitement. "When we see my dad, I'll make you cry and beg me to delete your disciplinary record!"

He pushed open the meeting room doors.

The board members seated around the table all stood up at once.

Arlo assumed they were greeting him. So, he smiled and nodded. "You're too kind, gentlemen. You don't have to stand for someone my age."

Then, he looked at me smugly. "See that? That's how much influence my dad has. You picked the wrong person to mess with today."

Unfortunately for him, all the board members merely turned to me and spoke with utmost respect. "Greetings, Ms. Tyne."

Nigel forced out a smile that looked worse than crying, his voice trembling as he spoke. "Ms. Tyne, I've already done as you asked… Can't you just let me off?"I pointed at the expulsion agreement in front of him, completely unmoved. "Director Latham, you'd better sign this now. You know full well that dragging this out will only make things worse. Also, don't bother trying to use your shares to threaten me. "You should know exactly what the Tyne Family is capable of."Nigel, now certain that there was truly no way to salvage the situation, eventually signed the agreement with a defeated expression on his face.My father couldn't help giving me a thumbs-up after watching me handle everything so decisively. "That's my girl. You settled everything before I even had to step in."I smiled and looped my arm through his, leaning against him as I said, "That's only because you were here backing me up. I have no idea how I was going to handle this if you weren't here."Just as Nigel was

Nigel's face turned ashen when he realized I had deliberately dragged things out to give him false hope. He was furious, but he didn't dare lose his temper now that my father was present. Instead, he forced himself to keep apologizing."Ms. Tyne, you've seen it yourself. I've already given Arlo a good thrashing. What more do you want me to do? He's just a kid. You can't be too harsh on a kid, right? Besides, you're just a counselor right now."He tried to use my role as a counselor to wriggle out of paying his dues, but I wasn't having it. "Mr. Latham is 20 this year. He's an adult. It's time for him to take responsibility for his actions. You say he's still a child, and I won't argue with that since he's a year shy of being legal. "Still, your 'child' has been abusing your authority on campus. He's been using your power to bully others and has even spread obscene rumors about a female faculty member. A bratty three-year-old would get a stern talking to for such behavior. "So, te

'He's here?'Everyone's eyes snapped toward the doorway, eager to finally see the elusive chairman who had never once shown his face. However, a look of confusion appeared on their faces when they recognized the man walking in as my father."Nigel, whatever it is, you can say it to me directly today. But as for this so-called close relationship between us… Why am I unaware of it?"Nigel scoffed, clearly unimpressed. "Philip, are you getting senile? I'm here to speak to the chairman. What does that have to do with you? You're just an investor."I shook my head in pity when I saw that Nigel had failed to connect the dots, letting out a quiet sigh. My father had always kept a low profile as he was never one to flaunt his wealth. Alas, his cover was blown because of me. I could already imagine the lecture waiting for me at home.Philip walked calmly to the head seat at the front and sat down, his tone measured and unhurried. "Do I have to spell it out for you? I am the chairman. I'm

Arlo hurriedly pulled out his phone to look it up. The moment he confirmed that top-grade emeralds matched the exact quality of my bracelet, his legs nearly gave out beneath him.Nigel caught a glimpse of it from the corner of his eye, and it seemed as if the sky had fallen on him at that split second. Still, he cleared his throat and forced himself to remain composed. "Elara, I only addressed you as Ms. Tyne out of courtesy. But at the end of the day, I'm still your elder. Your father may be an investor, but his shares don't exceed mine."I've been the one managing the school's affairs over the years, no matter how trivial. The school's admission rates would likely take a hit if I were to step down, which would affect everyone's interests. You're a smart girl, I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at. "Why don't we all meet in the middle and let today's matter slide?"His attempt at persuasion didn't move me in the slightest. I knew I could spare Nigel and his son the troubl

Arlo clutched his swollen, reddened cheek, practically seething with rage. "Dad! So what if they're an investor? You still hold the largest share on the school board! Why would you hit me over some outsider? Besides, Elara didn't exactly go easy on me before you got here!"Nigel might have struck him, but it was clearly just for show since so many eyes were on them. Still, Nigel's expression darkened considerably upon hearing his precious son's complaint. When he apologized again, it clearly lacked the sincerity from before."Ms. Tyne, Arlo's usually very well-behaved in private. What happened between the two of you today was just a joke. Young people have all kinds of ways of making friends. There's even a saying, 'no discord, no concord.' Please don't take it to heart."Now that I was watching him scramble to cover for Arlo, the decision that was still up in the air immediately solidified into certainty. I had assumed Arlo used Nigel's status to bully others on campus because Nige

As if on cue, the secretary, Rachel Thompson, entered the meeting room as well. She thoughtfully helped me put on the amplifier and spoke gently. "You've caught a cold recently. Please take care of your throat."David courteously pulled out a chair for me and said with a smile, "Mr. Tyne will be here later. We can't keep everyone waiting. Ms. Tyne, why don't you open the meeting first?"When Arlo noticed that even the amplifier I was wearing was trimmed with gold, he blurted out in shock, "How can a hick like you afford something that expensive?"I shot him an annoyed glance without bothering to explain. I was being low-key, not broke. Besides, the amplifier I was wearing was already the most understated one I owned. After I handed out the meeting materials, I took a sip of water to soothe my throat and prepared to step up. Rachel gestured politely, her movements carrying the refinement typical of wealthy households. "Ms. Tyne, please."'Ms. Tyne?'Only then did Arlo realize that
