Chapter 2

Penulis: Lucky Leaf
Early the next morning, I had just woken up when my best friend, Simon Reese, called me.

His voice crackled with excitement.

“Dom! Huge news! Did you hear? Yesterday, Ella and Benedict both missed the exam!

“Word is, Ella went back home to get Benedict's admission ticket, and they got stuck in traffic on the way back.

“In the end, neither of them made it into the exam hall—it even made the local news.”

I was silent for a moment, then replied calmly, “I know. I was there.”

“What!” Simon exclaimed. “You didn’t try to stop her?

“I heard the homeroom teacher nearly exploded when he found out.

“He was counting on you and Ella to get into WIT or other top universities and make the school proud. Now it’s probably just you…”

Simon was still the passionate eighteen-year-old boy I remembered, but I was no longer the same eighteen-year-old I once was.

In my past life, hearing news like that would’ve made me frantic with worry over Ella.

But in this life, I had no desire to entangle myself with her anymore.

“I didn’t stop her. It was her choice. She’ll bear the consequences. It has nothing to do with me,” I said quietly.

“Oh, and by the way, I broke up with her. She agreed.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Clearly, Simon hadn’t expected that.

“You broke up?” he finally asked.

“Yeah.”

He took a moment to collect himself. “Well… It’s a little sudden, but I get it.

“Ella was acting strange. I mean, this is SAT we’re talking about, and she ditched it for Benedict?

“It’s just…something about it doesn’t sit right with me. I can’t explain it.”

I couldn’t blame Simon for finding it strange.

The truth was, Ella had simply worn her mask too well.

Even as her husband in my previous life, I never saw the true feelings she had buried deep in her heart.

But it didn’t matter anymore. From now on, I only have to look out for myself.

As for Ella, I was curious to see whether she could still have everything go her way in this life.

At the class reunion, Ella walked into the private event hall with Benedict.

The two of them sat down on the sofa and got rather intimate.

Everyone around us was eager to see the drama unfold as they looked at me, then back at the two of them.

Someone finally broke the silence and asked, “Ella, we heard you and Benedict are planning to take a gap year?”

Benedict nodded as he leaned proudly into her embrace.

“Ella went all the way home to get my admission ticket,” he declared loudly.

“We missed the exam, sure—but it showed me her true heart.

“We’re together now, and next year, we’ll go to the same university.

“We’ve got it all planned. After graduation, we’ll get married and have babies. Life’s going to be sweet from here on out.”

Ella beamed with pride.

“It’s never too late for school, but miss the chance at love, and it may never come again.

“Besides, I'm sure I’ll get into WIT next year just the same.”

Benedict raised his eyebrows smugly, then tilted his head and kissed Ella on the lips.

“Woooooo!”

A chorus of cheers erupted from the boys in the room.

Amid the noise, Simon glanced at me, trying to read my expression.

He leaned in cautiously and murmured, “Hey man, don’t take it too hard, okay?

“Ella said she liked you not long ago, and now she’s already moved on? Honestly, breaking up with her was the right call.”

I turned my head and gently patted Simon’s back.

“Don’t worry,” I said with a calm smile. “I’m not upset.”

I met Ella in our second year of high school. We were in the same class.

And we were both straight-A students — I ranked first, she was second.

The teacher intentionally seated us together so we could support each other academically.

Over time, we grew closer. We talked about everything.

Even during breaks, we would discuss assignments together, often drawing teasing whistles from some of the girls in class.

Whenever that happened, Ella’s ears would turn red as she whispered an apology to me.

I would just lower my head, too shy to meet her eyes.

Until one day, after school, she confessed her feelings.

Back then, she was tall, fair-skinned, a top student, and clearly bound for WIT.

I truly believed I was the male lead in a campus romance, and that she was the girl fate had chosen for me.

No one could’ve predicted it would all come to a brutal halt ten years later, on that rainy night.

Simon tried again to comfort me as I remained silent.

“Ella may look good on the outside, but deep down she’s just a two-faced hag.

“And don’t even get me started on Benedict. He flirts with girls at school and hangs out with thugs.

“If his family didn’t have money, the school would’ve chucked him out ages ago.

“Honestly, neither of them are any good. This won’t last.”

I let out a soft laugh and slung an arm around Simon’s shoulder.

“Relax, man. I really don’t care anymore. I’m happy for them. Truly. I hope they stay together forever.”

After returning to WIT, I completed my master’s degree and joined a small tech startup in the city.My professors and classmates didn’t understand the move—only I knew the truth. This company would skyrocket in just two years.Joining early meant I could secure equity, and once the company went public, I’d be financially free.Low risk, high return. If I hadn’t lived this life once before, the opportunity would have never landed in my lap.The company was in its growth phase, and the workload was overwhelming. Every day felt like a blur.It wasn’t until I got a call from Simon that I realized a full year had slipped by.He was barely able to contain his excitement.“Dom! I’ve got huge gossip—Benedict’s family went bankrupt!”My heart skipped a beat. After all this time, I was hearing that name again.“It happened just recently. All of the Caspers’ illegal businesses got shut down.“Benedict’s parents were arrested, and rumor has it they’re looking at some serious prison ti

Back on campus, I smoothly transitioned into graduate studies.Within two years, I had written two research papers that, under the guidance of my advisor, were published in a respected academic journal.A company, impressed by my work, invited me to consult on a research project and offered a consulting fee of 100,000 dollars per month—my first real windfall. That summer, while home on break, I attended a class reunion with Simon. It had been years since I'd last seen Ella.To my shock, she looked far older than I remembered. Her hair was unkempt, her once-smooth skin had dulled, and her face was lined by the struggles in her life.Anyone unfamiliar with her might have guessed she was in her mid-thirties.Even more startling was her limp, which drew stares as she walked. One classmate, clearly looking for a reaction, called out mockingly, "Hey, Miss Genius! What happened to your leg?"Laughter erupted.Judging from their expressions, it wasn’t simple curiosity but a cruel j

By senior year, I had secured a spot in a top graduate program.I was doing research under a professor I deeply respected. My schedule was light, so I used the time to prepare for my thesis and lay the groundwork for my startup.During a break back home, I unexpectedly ran into Ella at the entrance of my apartment complex. It looked like she had been waiting there for a while. The moment she saw me, her eyes lit up with surprise. She walked over, wringing her hands a little, and hesitated before speaking.“Long time no see, Dom. How’s life in WIT treating you?”“Not bad,” I said nonchalantly. She let out an awkward laugh.“Right… Are you planning to apply for grad school? I heard it’s really competitive now, not something just anyone can get into.”“I got a recommendation.”Her smile faltered.“Recommendation?” she stammered, masking the flicker of shock in her eyes.“Well… yeah, I guess your school does offer spots like that.“But I’ve heard people say that grad school d

When the new semester began, I finally stepped through the gates of Whitmore Institute of Technology. Thanks to the experiences of my previous life, I had a much clearer vision for how to navigate university this time around.I didn’t just focus on academics, trying to rank first in my major.Outside the classroom, I actively participated in research projects, built connections with professors and top mentors, while expanding my network. These efforts not only smoothed my path in academia but also laid a solid foundation for my future in entrepreneurship.By the end of the term, I had secured the top spot in my department and won a prestigious research scholarship, quickly making a name for myself among my peers. When I returned home the next year, Simon invited me out for a catch-up.He came bearing news.“Ella is pregnant.”I raised an eyebrow, unable to hide my surprise.Simon’s face was alight with the thrill of the reveal. “You didn’t know, right?” he said, clearly enj

A month passed, and the start of the semester crept closer. I was at home packing with my parents when, to my surprise, Ella showed up at our door. She peeked inside and said sweetly, “Hi, Mrs. Benson. I’m Dominic’s classmate, Ella. I heard he’s going to WIT soon, and I wanted to say goodbye.”My mom nodded and called me to the door.Out in the hallway, it was just the two of us. I spoke first.“What do you want to say? Make it quick.”Ella frowned slightly as she carefully watched my expression. Her gaze made me uncomfortable, so I turned to head back inside.“If you’re not going to talk, I’m leaving—”She quickly reached out and blocked the door.“Are you still mad at me?”I gave her a puzzled look. She smirked, a little too pleased with herself.“I get it. You’re ashamed because I dumped you.“But honestly, anyone would’ve chosen Benedict.“He’s gorgeous, vibrant, devoted, and I’m completely in love with him.”I barked out a laugh. “Did you seriously come here just

Ella’s face twisted in irritation as she yanked her arm from Harry’s grasp.“That’s enough! What are you all making a scene for?“Benedict’s the most genuine guy I’ve ever met. He would never force me to do anything!“I chose this! Being with him is my dream—who cares about some stupid exam?”Her parents turned pale with anger. Harry’s hand trembled as he pointed at her.“You… you ungrateful child!"How could you say that? Don’t you care about your future at all? We raised you for nothing!"Ella’s expression remained cold and distant.“If you can’t accept me, then let’s cut ties.“From now on, I’ll treat Benedict’s parents as my own. They’re the only family I need.”Maria burst out in laughter and clapped gleefully.“Did you hear that, you two penniless teachers? Ella’s calling us family now. Why don’t you go home and cry yourselves to sleep?”Benedict wrapped his arm around Ella with a smug grin.“Mr. and Mrs. Simpson,” he said mockingly, “from now on, Ella is my future w
