Chapter 4

Author: Hyacinth
For the next week, neither brother contacted us.

The explanation appeared on Vera's social media.

Dozens of photographs showed her at a mountain resort between Adrian and Kane. They skied, drank in front of a stone fireplace, and posed like a family who had finally reunited.

Her caption said:

[The trip we promised each other five years ago. Real family always comes back for the memories they missed.]

On the morning we were discharged, Maya and I went straight to the pack enforcement office to report the crash.

The officer taking our statement looked more disturbed with every detail. "It's been twelve days. Most physical evidence will be difficult to recover. Why wasn't this reported immediately?"

Maya leaned back in her chair. "Because your commander revoked our ambulance clearance and went on vacation with another woman."

I handed over a broken piece of the vehicle's plate, the medical reports, and screenshots of every call. "I don't think it was an accident."

The driver had fled immediately after the collision. Vera had booked the SUV. And on the exact day of the crash, every camera along the eastern maintenance road had been shut down for service.

The officer accepted the evidence carefully. "We'll open a formal investigation."

After filing the report, we moved into Maya's old apartment. We had barely settled onto the couch when the phone rang. Adrian had been blocked, so he called from Kane's number.

"Where are you?" His voice was tight with anger. "Why is the Alpha residence empty?"

"You finally noticed we were gone."

"Elena, haven't you taken this far enough? You disappeared from the medical center for a week, and now you're moving while pregnant. What are you trying to prove?"

"Nine tomorrow morning. Council hall. Bring Kane."

"If you want to destroy your own marriage, that's your decision. Why are you dragging Maya into it? She and Kane had an argument. That's all. Do you have to ruin someone else's life because yours isn't perfect?"

Maya heard every word. She snatched the phone from me.

"Adrian, you should stop speaking as a healer. Every time you open your mouth, I worry the whole pack is going to die from your stupidity."

She ended the call and blocked both brothers' numbers.

The next morning, we arrived outside the council hall on time.

Vera was already there.

She wore a white cashmere coat and had carefully reddened eyes, as if she'd dressed for the tragedy she planned to perform.

"Elena, Maya, I'm sorry," she began. "I honestly didn't know they hadn't contacted you. That trip was something we promised each other five years ago. I even reminded them to tell their mates before leaving."

Maya folded her arms. "Why are you here? Are you signing for them, or choosing which one gets to be your Alpha first?"

Vera went pale. "I only want to stop a misunderstanding from destroying your relationships."

"Do they need your permission to dissolve their mate contracts?" I asked.

"I know you hate me. Hit me, curse me, do whatever you need. Just don't leave them—"

Her foot slid, and she pitched herself directly at me.

I raised an arm on instinct. Vera fell backward onto the stone steps and scraped her palm just enough to produce a bright line of blood.

"Elena!"

Adrian came running.

He didn't ask what had happened. He shoved me aside and crouched in front of Vera. My healing incision pulled as I stumbled into Maya. She caught me, but the strain made her face go white.

The wind caught my coat, exposing my flat stomach. Adrian followed my gaze, and the blood drained from his face. "Where's the pup?"

The Werewolf Council sentenced Vera to life imprisonment for attempted murder, conspiracy, and abuse of pack security access. At the next full-pack assembly, Alpha Ronan announced that both sons had permanently lost the right to inherit."An Alpha must first believe and protect the wolves closest to him," he said. "A man who ignores his mate's plea for help has no right to demand an entire pack's trust."Adrian's medical license was suspended for three years. During the inquiry, his mental condition deteriorated. He nearly made a serious mistake in a complicated silver-injury procedure after freezing at the sound of a ringing phone. The patient survived, but the medical board ruled that Adrian was unfit for clinical work.Kane lost command of enforcement and was ordered into treatment for trauma and unstable shifts. Whenever a phone rang, he heard Maya in the storm saying, [Our pup is fading.]More than once, he shifted in the middle of patrol and charged toward a stranger's ringing ph

By the time Adrian drove into the enforcement compound, Vera knew something was wrong. She beat on the windows, tried to call for help, and reached for the door before the SUV had fully stopped. For the first time in his life, Adrian didn't protect her.He kept the doors locked, pulled her from the passenger seat, and escorted her into the building with a face that showed nothing."Adrian, you can't believe them. They hate me. They'll say anything to destroy me."Kane slammed the bank records, rideshare order, restored alarm logs, and driver statements onto the table."Did they force you to unplug the sensor too? Did they use my access code to fake a rogue incursion?"The SUV driver recognized her instantly. "That's her."The helpless mask vanished, leaving naked hatred as she stared at me."Why should you have everything?" she demanded. "I grew up with them. I stayed beside Adrian through his first shift. I bandaged Kane after his first patrol injury."Her voice rose. "I leave for fiv

Vera had been careful. The payments moved through foreign accounts and shell companies before reaching the drivers. She hadn't been careful enough to anticipate cooperation between pack enforcement and human financial-crime investigators. The original funds came from a private account she had opened after leaving Silver Ridge five years earlier. There had never been a rogue intrusion. The sensor had been disconnected manually from inside the house. The border warning had been issued through the visitor access Kane once gave Vera so she could request help in an emergency. She had known he would prioritize the border. She had known Adrian would stay if she mentioned silver. Most of all, she had known neither brother would believe his own mate."I was supposed to protect this pack. She used my authority to kill my pup."Maya stood in the doorway, unreadable. Kane turned to her. His voice shook. "If I'd asked for your location just once...""There is no if," she said. "You chose who you be

Kane called from an official enforcement number. "The maintenance order came from inside the medical center," he said. His voice was lower than usual, stripped of its familiar aggression. "Only administrators, the security supervisor, and senior healers knew the exact shutdown window."I thought of Adrian at once.Vera wouldn't have needed to hack anything. All she had to do was sit in his office and casually ask why workers kept appearing along the eastern road. Adrian had never guarded information from her."What else did you find?""The headlight fragments belong to a white seven-seat SUV registered to a rideshare company. The driver resigned the same day.""Resigned isn't the same as vanished."Kane went silent."We're looking for him."Anger flared so sharply that I sat up despite the pull in my stitches. "Your officers can track rogues over three mountains, but you can't find a man with a legal identity, a payroll account, and a registered phone? Are you investigating, Kane, or b

Alpha Ronan had never named which son would inherit Silver Ridge. Adrian had earned the elders' support through medicine, discipline, and clear judgment. Kane commanded the loyalty of younger warriors through strength, decisive action, and years of border victories.Ronan finished reading the medical reports, his expression dark enough to silence the entire room. "Are both requests to dissolve the mate contracts made freely?""Yes," Maya and I answered together.Adrian immediately stepped forward. "Father, Elena has suffered severe physical and emotional trauma. She may not be in a stable condition to make an irreversible decision."I turned to him. "You're using your professional judgment to make another decision for me?"His breath caught. "That's not what I meant.""It's always what you mean. You decide whether I'm in pain. You decide whether I'm in danger. You decide whether my words deserve to be believed."I held his gaze. "You never loved a partner, Adrian. You managed a patient

At that moment, Kane strode toward us with a phone at his ear. "I don't have time for a contract hearing. Enforcement just opened an attempted-murder case involving two women who were eight months pregnant—"He looked up and saw Maya.He saw how much weight she'd lost, the gray exhaustion in her face, and the empty line of her waist. Then his wolf caught the scent of postpartum blood and a dead pup.The phone slipped from his hand and shattered on the steps."Maya..." His voice scraped out of him. "Where is our pup?"Vera remained tucked against Adrian. Her eyes flickered, and she spoke in a tremulous voice. "Don't pressure them. Maybe they were just too angry. Maybe... maybe they thought you didn't care enough, so they ended the pregnancies to make you regret it."I pulled two stamped medical reports from the envelope and dropped them at Adrian's feet."You trust your medical judgment more than anything, don't you?""Then read."I met his eyes. "Both pups died the night you hung up on
