Chapter 2

Author: Arlene
The next morning, I had just finished packing when the broker called. "Donna, the vineyard and bar in your name will be ready for transfer the day after tomorrow. Don't worry. Once the money is in your overseas accounts, no one will be able to trace it."

The day after tomorrow, Alessandro would marry Daisy. By then, I'd be long gone.

I had barely zipped up my suitcase when Alessandro walked in with Daisy in his arms.

She wore one of his shirts, and blood trickled down her calf.

He gently set her down, then said sternly, "I assigned you bodyguards. Why didn't you keep them with you?"

Daisy's eyes filled with tears.

"I was so excited to see you that I rushed over. I missed a step and fell. Do you think I'm a burden now? Maybe you never wanted me to come back."

The moment Alessandro saw her tears, his anger vanished.

"I've never thought that. Daisy, I can't stand seeing you hurt."

He grabbed the first-aid kit himself and knelt in front of her.

"Daisy, I'll never get tired of you. I'll stay by your side from now on."

He cleaned the cut with a cotton swab, handling her as if she might break.

Daisy winced, and his eyes immediately filled with concern.

"Does it hurt?"

She shook her head and clung to his arm.

"Alessandro, as long as you're here, it doesn't hurt at all."

I watched them quietly.

As the Don, Alessandro had enemies everywhere. In five years of marriage, I'd faced more than my share of danger because of him.

Just last year, I'd protected him during an attack at the docks. A blade tore through my arm, soaking my sleeve in blood.

Alessandro had barely looked at the wound.

"If you're hurt, see a doctor. I have a thing about germs. I can't deal with that."

Only later did I find out why he'd been in such a hurry to leave.

He was afraid his enemies might go after Daisy, so he'd flown overseas that same day just to make sure she was safe.

My wound needed 13 stitches.

When Alessandro finally returned, he at least had the decency to look guilty.

"Next time you're out with me, look after yourself first."

That was all he'd said. Now Daisy had a tiny cut, and he was on his knees treating it himself.

I must have been lost in thought, because I didn't notice Daisy glance at the table until it was too late. My ring was lying there. I'd taken it off while packing. It matched the one Alessandro wore.

I reached for it, but Daisy was faster. She slipped it onto her finger.

"Alessandro, whoever wears this ring can command the whole family. Shouldn't it be on my hand now?"

Alessandro saw me reaching for it and frowned.

"Olivia, aren't we getting a divorce? You're in no position to fight Daisy over that ring. Give it to her."

Before I could answer, Daisy linked her arm through his.

"Alessandro, can you get me something to wear? I'm a little cold."

He kissed her forehead and went upstairs.

I turned to leave, but Daisy grabbed my wrist.

The sweet smile vanished from her face. She stepped closer and slapped me across the face.

"You're nothing but a cheap little slut who used her looks to get into Alessandro's bed. You really thought you could steal him from me?"

My cheek stung from the blow.

Daisy leaned closer.

"Alessandro married you. So what? Everybody knows you're a trophy wife. All you can do is look pretty and keep Alessandro entertained. You're worth less to him than the poodle tied up outside."

I clenched my fists and let her finish.

Then I slapped her, twice as hard as she'd slapped me.

"At least his family accepted me. You can't say the same. Five years ago, you betrayed him and ran overseas!"

The blow sent her crashing into the coffee table.

I grabbed her by the hair and forced her to look at me.

"That was for slapping me. I've already let you have Alessandro, so stay out of my way."

I let go and turned toward the door.

Behind me, Daisy suddenly threw herself backward and screamed.

"Please, Olivia, don't kill me!"

The moment I said it, a tear slipped down Alessandro's cheek."Olivia, I came here and swallowed my pride. Doesn't that earn me one more chance?"He rolled up his sleeve, revealing an arm covered in scars."I got every one of these scars trying to save you. Olivia, I do love you."Then he held out the signet ring, the symbol of the Moretti family's power. His eyes stayed fixed on mine."You're the only one worthy of this ring. As for Daisy, the family will decide how to punish her."Daisy wasn't going to make it out alive. The Moretti family showed no mercy to traitors. But I'd already died once to escape this life. I wasn't going back to him.I once had hopes for our marriage. I wanted us to have something real. But after five years, he'd never truly opened his heart to me. This time, I was done."Alessandro, I can't spend the rest of my life waiting for you to finally notice me. You have power and money. I never blamed you for loving someone before me. But in the five years we were m

I spent three peaceful months in that city.No one bothered me, and my days were quiet. Then one day, Nina showed up with two bottles of wine."Olivia, do you want to hear about Alessandro?"I looked up, a little curious. Not because I still loved him. I just wanted to know how he'd reacted when he thought I was dead."The cottage fire was massive. Alessandro put a gun to a guard's head and ordered them to find you. When the flames grew too intense for anyone to go near the cottage, Alessandro broke the padlock himself and ran inside to look for you."I frowned.Alessandro had enemies everywhere. He'd always valued his own life and avoided unnecessary risks.I never thought he'd run into a burning building for me."Olivia, do you think he still loves you?"I shook my head. I had no idea what was going through Alessandro's mind. But during our five years together, he'd never treated me like I mattered that much."Did he get married?"Nina swirled the wine in her glass, looking amused."

A few days later, my new passport was ready, and I moved to a city I'd never visited before.Nina handed me a folder."These are the assets you asked me to handle. The winery, the storefronts, everything was sold on the black market. After their cut, seventy-five million dollars was transferred to your account. Alessandro won't be able to trace any of it. Olivia, this is your fresh start."I looked down at the bank card in my hand.It felt more real than any love Alessandro had ever shown me.My new home was a small coastal city, far beyond his reach.I rented a café by the sea and settled into a quiet, carefree life. From the second-floor terrace, I could see the port in the distance. One afternoon, as I stared out at it, memories of the times I'd driven Alessandro there for business came flooding back. For five years, I'd enjoyed everything he gave me. I never had to lift a finger or worry about anything. To everyone else, I was nothing but a woman living off a powerful man.But they

Alessandro kicked open the bedroom door. Parts of his clothes had already burned away, but he didn't care. All he cared about was finding Olivia.Their wedding portrait still hung on the wall, half consumed by flames. In the photo, they stood hand in hand, and Olivia looked at him as if he were the only person in the world.Alessandro beat out the flames and pulled what remained of the photo from the wall."Olivia, come out! I'm getting you out right now! No matter what happens, I won't leave you behind!"There was no answer. He searched the room frantically until something near the collapsed dressing table caught his eye.A necklace lay at his feet.It was the one he'd given Olivia for their fifth anniversary. He'd bought the stone at auction and had the necklace custom-made for her because nothing else had seemed good enough.Alessandro picked it up, his chest tightening. He'd never imagined things would end like this.Only now did he understand how little he'd cared about what Olivi

Seeing Alessandro's expression, several guards grabbed buckets, but none dared get too close. The cottage was completely engulfed in flames. The windows had already shattered from the heat.Alessandro grabbed Enzo by the collar, his eyes bloodshot."Nothing could have happened to Olivia. Tell me where she is!"Enzo trembled in his grip, terrified that one wrong answer might cost him his life."T-the Donna... she's still inside. Last night, you ordered your men to lock her in there. You said no one could let her out unless you or Ms. Ward gave permission. We locked the door because you both ordered us to."Alessandro's head snapped toward the cottage.Only then did he notice the heavy padlock on the front door. There was no way to break down the front door from the inside. Even a grown man might not have been able to escape through the windows.Alessandro began to shake. He couldn't imagine how terrified Olivia must be, trapped inside with no way out."Break the door down! Now!"No one

On the day of the wedding, the entire estate was lit up for the celebration.Locked inside the cottage, I watched from a distance as Alessandro took Daisy's hand.Five years ago, I'd stood in her place. The whole family had gathered around us as Alessandro gave me the wedding I'd always dreamed of.He'd held my hand just like this and promised to spend the rest of his life with me.Now he was making the same promise to Daisy."I take Daisy to be my wife, and I will never betray or abandon her."The diamond on her finger caught the light, and its sparkle was almost painful to look at.I reached for the necklace around my neck. Alessandro had given it to me for our fifth anniversary.I tore it off and called Nina. "Come and get me. I want to disappear from his life for good."By the time the reception was in full swing, everyone's attention was on the main house. It was time. I knocked over the oil lamp, and flames quickly spread through the cottage. Then I played the recording I'd prepa
