Chapter 2

Author: Longway
After giving Mom a ride home, I returned to my post at work.

To my surprise, Lindsey stubbornly followed me. "Dr. Monroe, it's fine. You don't have to apologize. I never take things to heart. It's just that Dr. Jones has been paying a lot of attention to me lately, and I'm worried he might get upset and affect your marriage."

I gave her a brief glance. "If you're bored, find something to do."

For once, Lindsey bit her lip and nodded. Yet before ten minutes had passed, a sharp scream erupted from the operating room next door.

I frowned, recalling the medical accident from my previous life. However, we weren't even in that operating room today. What could Lindsey possibly be up to?

The scream had come from Dr. Liam Cooper.

When I got there, Liam was freaking out, pointing at Lindsey. "Who told you to clean the robotic arm with alcohol gauze and to pry it open with your hands? Do you even realize that this Medico Surgical Robot costs at least 20 million dollars?"

Tears filled Lindsey's reddened eyes and ran down her round cheeks. She cowered behind Michael, gripping his lab coat sleeve. "Dr. Jones, I didn't do it on purpose. I just wanted to disinfect it. It looked like stainless steel, so I thought it could handle it."

Michael's face drained of color when he saw the damaged arm. But as soon as he looked into Lindsey's innocent eyes, he gently said, "Alright, stop crying. Machines can be replaced. What matters is that you're okay."

He turned to Liam and firmly said, "You're in charge of the surgical equipment. She messed up, so you share the blame. The cost of repairs will come out of your performance bonus and incentives this year."

Liam froze, shocked by the unfairness of it all.

Lindsey, meanwhile, kept sobbing. "I'm really sorry! Dr. Monroe told me to find something to do. This is all my fault. I've even dragged Dr. Cooper into it. I'll pay my share once I get my salary."

Michael sighed. "Lindsey, you have a sense of responsibility, but this machine has warranty insurance. Don't carry the burden on your own."

What kind of responsibility did Lindsey actually bear? Liam was the one really taking the fall.

The Medico Surgical Robot was incredibly expensive. Just the robotic arm alone would cost tens of thousands to replace, even after insurance.

Michael had always been strict about separating personal and professional matters. Back in my first year, dropping a pair of forceps earned me a public scolding and a docked bonus. Now, Lindsey caused damage worth tens of thousands, and he just brushed it off, making the innocent Liam take the fall.

Just then, Lindsey spoke up boldly. "Honestly, I think this is Dr. Monroe's fault. If she hadn't bossed me around, none of this would've happened."

I let out a cold laugh. "Lindsey, did I tell you to mess around in the OR? You have zero common sense, and the first thing you do when something goes wrong is blame someone else. How did you even get into this hospital?"

Before I could finish speaking, Michael suddenly swung his hand and slapped me across the face.

The slap was brutal. I hadn't seen it coming. My head jerked sideways, my ears rang, and the metallic taste of blood filled my mouth.

"Watch how you speak and act! Lindsey is just an intern. Mistakes are part of learning. As a senior doctor, you should be guiding her, not attacking her and shifting blame. Where's your professionalism?"

Lindsey cowered behind him. Her face went pale, and tears streamed down as if she had been wronged in the worst way. "Dr. Jones, please don't fight with Dr. Monroe over me. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come…"

I touched my cheek and coldly said, "Fine. I'll pay for the damages. But Michael, we're getting a divorce."

Lindsey's words pushed the man over the edge."None of my business? I'll show you what my business is! I'll kill you both today, you sick pair!" he roared, grabbing the sturdy broom handle and charging straight at Michael. The strike was sudden and brutal, landing squarely on Michael's abdomen. Michael hadn't expected it and let out a muffled groan, bending over from the impact.Lindsey screamed in terror. The man's eyes were bloodshot, and he didn't stop. It was as if he were pouring out all his pent‑up rage at once. He yanked the broom handle free and brought it down on Lindsey again and again. "How dare you fool around with another man and humiliate me! Both of you, die!"It all happened in a blur. People screamed and scattered in panic. By the time I snapped out of it, I was already on my phone, calling the police and an ambulance. Supermarket security rushed over, and it took several of them working together to finally pin the man down.I rushed forward, crouching to check

  • The Day the Hospital Made a Killer   Chapter 9

Maybe most couples in this world were like Michael and me. We could face hardship together, but we could never share success. After saying that, I didn't bother looking at whether his face held regret or embarrassment. I turned, swiped my keycard, and walked into the neighborhood.…It was an ordinary weekend afternoon when I ran into someone I knew all too well. I was pushing a shopping cart through the supermarket when my eyes happened to land on Lindsey, not far ahead. She had lost a lot of weight. The deliberately cute, flirtatious air she once carried was completely gone. Her face held the weariness and bitterness life had worn into her, and her clothes were plain.Next to her stood a stocky man in a tight T-shirt, giving off a rough, intimidating air. They seemed to be quietly arguing over what groceries to buy.Lindsey saw me too. Her eyes first widened in surprise, then quickly hardened into unmasked jealousy and resentment. Her gaze swept over my outfit before she yan

My colleague hesitated for a moment, then said, "I heard that when he had nothing to do, he completely fell apart, drowning his days in alcohol. Somehow, he later found out about you and even bragged that the two of you were so in love, he was certain you'd come back."I only gave a faint smile and didn't respond. In love? What a ridiculous joke.A while later, I ran into Michael at my apartment building after work.He looked far more haggard than before. The confidence he used to carry was gone. His clothes were sloppy, and he carried a bag that seemed to have some fruit in it."Gwen!" His eyes lit up when he saw me, and he hurried over, forcing a familiarity that felt a little too forced."I came to see your mom. I heard she's recovering well. I brought some fruit for her…"I stepped back to avoid the bag and looked at him coldly. "Mr. Jones, are we that close? You really don't need to bother."Michael froze. A flicker of embarrassment crossed his face, but it was quickly re

Lindsey grabbed Michael's hand, sobbing uncontrollably. "You promised you'd always protect me! You said no matter what trouble I got into, you'd cover for me! How can you just deny it now? Say something, Michael!"At that moment, all Michael wanted was to shake her off. His eyes were icy, filled with disgust. "You're insane. I can't believe I ever trusted you."Lindsey snapped back, refusing to be cowed. "No, I'm the one who was blind! You used me, and now that things have gone wrong, you're trying to shove all the blame on me! Michael, you're not even human!"In front of everyone, they went at each other like bitter rivals, shouting and pointing fingers. The fragile illusion of their past closeness fell away, leaving only selfishness and scheming exposed.Jeremy's expression darkened as he watched the chaos unfold. The lead officer waved his hand and yelled, "Enough! Stop yelling!"Several officers stepped forward and pulled the two apart. "Dr. Michael Jones, Ms. Lindsey Clark,

Mom turned to Michael and looked at him with clear disappointment. "Michael, do you even remember how you proposed to Gwen?"Michael stiffened. He didn't dare meet her gaze. However, she didn't let him off. "You sword you'd protect Gwen, no matter what. And now? You're here cheating with this…"She paused, searching for the right word to describe Lindsey, then continued, "Cheating alone would have been bad enough, but you went even further. You worked together with her to frame Gwen for murder. Where's your conscience?"As she stood there to defend me, emotion pricked at my senses. Michael might have overlooked such steadfast loyalty, but Mom remembered it all on my behalf.Michael was left speechless. His face shifted from pale to sallow, and he averted his eyes, too guilty to face Mom, let alone me.Lindsey finally lost control. "You're lying! You're her mother, of course you'd cover for her! You two are teaming up to fool everyone!"As Jeremy took in the chaos, his gaze moved

I calmly turned to Lindsey and asked, "Lindsey, was it really me who told you to get the medication? Are you sure?"Lindsey nodded firmly. "I swear on my integrity! I didn't lie. You were the one who told me to get it! You're the one who killed Mr. Lockman Senior!"I let out a soft sigh. "It looks like you don't have much integrity after all.""Gwen!" Michael cut in sharply. "What do you mean by that? At a time like this, are you seriously trying to push all the blame onto an intern? Where are your professional ethics?"Lindsey immediately echoed him, crying even harder. "Dr. Monroe, I know you're jealous that I'm close to Dr. Jones, and you're still bitter about it. But you're already divorced! No matter how angry you are or how much you hate me, you can't mess with someone's life!"I watched them echo each other and calmly said, "Lindsey, you're absolutely right. As medical professionals, we must always hold life in the highest regard."Then I turned to Jeremy, who was still tr
