Chapter 3 Turning Against Me

Author: Vesper Crossing
The hospital called during lunch.

Sophia put the call on speaker, and the doctor's excited voice filled the classroom.

Her mother was awake. The lesions had shrunk rapidly, and her test results were returning to normal.

Sophia cried as she made the doctor confirm it several times.

The moment the call ended, the whole class erupted.

"She's really better!"

"Naomi was so kind!"

"Guess a certain someone has nothing to say now!"

I stood outside the crowd, and for the first time, I wavered.

Could I really have been wrong? But the doubt lasted only a moment.

Someone who had been dead for three months. A wish wheel that had appeared out of nowhere.

A good outcome, at least for now, did not mean we could stop being cautious.

"I'm glad your mom is getting better, too." I looked at Sophia. "But she still needs to be monitored. You'd better keep all her test reports. And don't touch that wheel again."

The smile vanished from her face. "So, you're still hoping something happens to my mom?"

"I never said that."

"Then, why can't you admit it? The wheel is a gift Naomi left us."

Felix gave a cold laugh.

"Because if she admits it, she won't be able to keep pretending. Naomi didn't hate us. That proves we never drove her to that. If anything, the person who claimed to be closest to her is more suspicious."

Beatrice pulled out her phone and pointed the camera at my face. "Clara, apologize to Sophia. Then apologize to Naomi."

I blocked the camera. "Why should I apologize?"

"You almost stopped Sophia from saving her mom."

"I stopped her because I had no idea what that wheel was."

"Now you do. It's a gift Naomi left us!"

I looked at them, unable to believe the irony.

When Naomi was alive, they called her dirty and accused her of putting on an act.

Now that she was dead and the wheel was giving them what they wanted, she had suddenly become the kindest person they knew.

What right did people like them have to demand that I apologize to her?

"I'm not apologizing."

Sophia suddenly took off the bracelet I had given her and threw it at my feet. "Then, we have nothing left to say to each other. Anyone who can't even be happy that my mom is getting better doesn't deserve to be my friend."

…

That afternoon, a video of me stopping Sophia from claiming her wish was posted in the school group chat.

The video had been edited down to show only me grabbing the phone and stopping Sophia from claiming her wish.

The title read, "The Person Who Drove Naomi to Her Death Is Now Trying to Kill Sophia's Mom."

The next day, my desk had been moved into the girls' bathroom.

My backpack was soaked in the mop sink. My workbooks had been torn apart and scattered across the floor. The word "Murderer" was written all over the back of my school uniform.

I dragged my desk back into the classroom. They carried it away again right in front of me.

When I tried to stop them, Beatrice raised her phone and laughed. "Don't touch me. I don't want to become the next Naomi."

"This is bullying."

Felix frowned. "Don't throw that word around. We're just demanding justice for Naomi."

Sophia stood among the crowd and enunciated clearly, "Clara, you know exactly what you did to Naomi."

After the investigation ended, I transferred to another school. No one came to see me off.Felix sent me dozens of messages. He said he had only deleted a memory card and should not have lost his guaranteed admission.Beatrice said everyone was already blaming her and asked why I still would not clear things up for her.Gregory wanted me to sign a statement saying I forgave him so his punishment would be reduced.I did not answer any of them. They were not sorry for what they had done to Naomi. They were sorry they finally had to face the consequences. At my new school, no one knew who I was.At first, I still was not comfortable with people getting too close. If someone laughed behind me, I would check my uniform for anything someone might have written on it.If my desk mate borrowed my phone, I would instinctively tighten my grip on my backpack. The school counselor told me I did not have to force myself to forget everything right away."Walking away from the people who h

Once the scandal became impossible to contain, the school finally stopped trying to bury it.The Department of Education formed an investigation team. The grade-level dean was suspended. The homeroom teacher admitted to deleting posts and pressuring students to stick to the same story. She was removed from her teaching position. The school still wanted to salvage what little dignity it had left. The principal came to Hazel and me personally, hoping we would settle the matter privately."The school is willing to pay compensation. We'll also clear Naomi's name, but could the public apology leave out the specific teachers and students involved?"I pushed the statement they had prepared back across the table. It read, "Naomi Ellington passed away due to mental health issues. The school deeply regrets her passing."There was no mention of bullying. No mention of the sexual rumors. No mention of the school's negligence.Once again, all the blame was being pushed onto Naomi."This

Felix still refused to confess. His early-admission paperwork was already complete. If he could hold out for another two weeks, he would receive his official acceptance letter. His father had hired a lawyer, who insisted the chat records could have been fabricated."My son was just the class president. When a conflict broke out between students, what was wrong with him stepping in to keep order?"Beatrice's parents also rushed to the school. Her mother pointed at Hazel and shouted, "Your daughter is already dead. Why won't you leave the living alone? Beatrice finally got her looks. She's about to audition for a talent show. Do you really have to ruin her future?"Hazel didn't argue. She asked only one question. "Did she fabricate the photos?"Beatrice's mother choked. "She's just a kid. She was only fooling around.""Then, let her explain that joke in front of everyone."Beatrice clenched her teeth. She couldn't do it.If she admitted to fabricating the photos and spreading t

Gregory was the first to speak. He had just received $5 million and had already used part of it to pay off his father's debts. If the wish were taken back, his family would never be able to repay them."The first photo was posted by Beatrice! She said Naomi had stolen her spot as host for the school anniversary event. She wanted to teach her a lesson."Beatrice lunged at him. "That's a lie!"He immediately pulled up their chat history."Put this in her backpack."Beneath the message was a photo of a condom. The message had been sent by Beatrice."You told me to plant it! You said the bigger the scene, the better. You wanted to make sure she'd be too humiliated to keep hosting the school anniversary event!"Beatrice's face went white. She turned and pointed at Felix."Felix knew too! When the teacher investigated the first time, he told everyone to stick to the same story and say they had not seen anything. He said as long as we all gave the same account, Naomi couldn't do any

The school wanted to classify the whole thing as a conflict between classmates. The grade-level dean called me into the office alone."They didn't actually hurt you. We still need to investigate what happened with the camera. Clara, this is senior year. If more than 40 students are disciplined, it could hurt the entire grade's college-admission rate."I set my phone on the desk. The videos showed my desk being carried into the bathroom, my backpack being dunked into a mop bucket, and my uniform covered in filthy insults."What about Naomi?"The dean frowned. "Don't mix the two incidents together.""They're the same incident. They used those rumors to drive her to her death. Now, they're using her name to bully me."The homeroom teacher sighed. "We know you've been wronged, but you need to think about the bigger picture, too."I nodded and opened another recording. It was from a class meeting after Naomi's death. The grade-level dean's voice came through clearly. "If the inves

No one spoke. The hands that had been gripping me only moments ago slowly let go, one after another. The only sound left in the bathroom was the steady beep of 46 phones counting down in unison.Beatrice was the first to react. "Quit the act."She tapped "Choose How to Repay."Two lines immediately appeared on the screen."1. Return the wish received.""2. Publicly disclose all actions taken in Naomi's incident and accept the consequences."A third line appeared underneath."Repayment period: Seven days."Felix's expression darkened. "Close the post."Someone immediately did. However, whether they left the school forum or shut down and restarted their phones, the repayment page kept appearing.Gregory snatched someone else's phone and tried logging into his own account. The same message appeared."Switching phones won't work. The account's bound to it. Is someone controlling this from the backend?"For the first time, everyone remembered that this might not be some super
