We stayed quiet for the next few days, holed up behind Ma Agatha's thin curtains, never once letting the sun touch our skin, never once setting foot past the front step. My leg had begun to heal slowly, the swelling from that night's frantic run finally easing under Ma Agatha's relentless care, though I noticed, with a guilt that gnawed at me constantly, how much of her own strength she was pouring into mine while ignoring whatever illness kept blooming red against her handkerchief.
