Chapter 4

Author: Bagel
Another night passed. Only twelve nights remained until the Night of the Shattered Moon.

I returned to my cold, remote room, and the first thing I said to Faye as I stepped inside was:

"Light the brazier."

Ethereal blue flames shot up, licking at the stone walls and illuminating the things I once held so dear.

The silver-white gown embroidered with stardust, the one I was meant to wear as I walked toward Caelum on the night of our soul-binding.

A Verdantleaf Bow, imbued with vibrant life, which he had carved for me with his own hands.

And a Starlight Necklace that shimmered with a faint glow, a wisp of Caelum's soul-imprint sealed within.

They were all gifts from Caelum.

Each one heavy with meaning.

He had spent an entire season after his coming of age polishing the bow, his fingers left raw and bleeding from the splinters.

The gown was made from the finest ice-silk, which he had braved the treacherous Misted Forest to find, all to please me.

As for the necklace, everyone in the elven lands knew that parting with a soul-imprint was a pain akin to scraping bone.

The elves once whispered that Prince Caelum spoiled a Dark Elf beyond reason.

And I had been naive enough to believe it.

But the boy who had been willing to carve out a piece of his soul for me was long dead.

"The fire is lit, my lady." Faye pushed the magic brazier to my feet, her eyes already red.

"These things… you used to forbid anyone from even touching them. Why are you burning them now?"

I stepped forward, grabbed the stardust gown and the Verdantleaf Bow, and tossed them into the flames without hesitation.

Watching the exquisite objects twist and blacken in the maw of the magical fire, my thoughts drifted back to the year my magic awakened.

Caelum had placed the necklace with his soul-imprint around my neck, his eyes full of warmth as he looked at me, as if I were his one and only star in this life.

"Elowen," he had asked in a low voice, "you've come of age. Will you be the partner of my soul?"

In my memory, that was the last time he had ever formally mentioned the soul-bond to me.

The flames consumed the last glimmer of starlight on the gown.

My voice was as light as the wind. "The marriage pact is broken."

"Keeping them only serves as a reminder of how foolish I once was."

Faye cried out and lunged forward, trying to snatch the Starlight Necklace from the edge of the brazier, but I caught her hand.

"Burn everything that can be burned."

"Take what cannot be burned to the black market tomorrow and sell it. All except the royal soul-ring. With its sigil, no one there will dare to touch it, so we must keep it."

I looked at Faye, a sliver of my remaining warmth in my voice. "I will be leaving this world."

"But you must take this gold and live a good life."

Faye's tears spilled over, and she could only nod desperately.

The next morning, as usual, I went to the main house to pay my respects to my parents.

The two holes in my collarbones from the cold iron had begun to fester and ooze, a dull ache like a red-hot nail permanently embedded in the bone gnawing at me without pause.

Every step felt like walking on shattered bone.

At the turn in the long corridor leading to the main hall, I came face to face with Caelum.

He stood between the pillars, dressed in a moon-white tunic, his posture rigid, his expression cool.

The face I once thought I could entrust my entire life to now held nothing but a distant, unapproachable coldness.

Seeing my deathly pale face, he frowned slightly and reached out to take my hand.

"Elowen, you don't look well. Are you feeling ill?"

"I'm fine." I pulled my hand back. "I just didn't sleep well."

He did not press further, as if my pain were just another of my supposed tantrums.

"I came today to take you to the royal sanctuary."

On a fixed day each month, I had to accompany him to pay respects at his deceased mother's tomb.

The former queen despised me, even publicly humiliating me by saying, "As long as I draw breath, that Vaelen girl will never tarnish the royal bloodline."

Back then, Caelum had defied his mother's wishes and insisted on our betrothal.

So, despite the scorn, I went to her tomb each month and knelt, enduring the icy glares of the high elven ladies of the court, begging for an approval that would never be granted.

But now, none of it was necessary. I looked up, met his eyes, my voice so calm it felt foreign even to me.

"I won't be going with you anymore."

"The princess you should be taking to see her is Nyssa."

Caelum's brow furrowed sharply, my bluntness apparently an affront to his pride.

"Elowen, must you be so petty? Your sister has only a few days left, and you still want to fight her over this?"

So that's what I was in his eyes. A petty, jealous creature, from beginning to end.

The absurdity of his logic almost made me laugh.

I opened my mouth to retort, but a thick, cloying, metallic taste surged up from my chest.

I instinctively raised a silk handkerchief to my lips.

I coughed, the taste of cloying metallic sweetness filling my mouth, and I lowered the handkerchief.

On the snow-white silk, a large, dark stain was spreading in a twisted pattern.

It was blackened, viscous blood, threaded with wisps of necrotic power.

Before the gates of the Underworld, the eternally lingering, freezing astral winds howled like blades. The stone slabs here were colder than deep ice.Caelum lay flat on the pitch-black stones. He had crawled all the way from the mud zone for three days and three nights. His luxurious robes were now rags. The flesh on his knees had been worn to the bone, and the nails on his fingers were torn and curled back. But the hand clutching the ring remained suspended, as if terrified to let it touch a single speck of dust.Hanging by a thread, he stared despairingly at the tightly shut massive black doors.Just as his consciousness was on the verge of scattering completely, the abyssal gates slowly creaked open, revealing a sliver of a gap.A pure, rich fragrance of spectral flowers drifted out, dispelling the nauseating scent of blood around him.Wearing an extraordinarily magnificent dark night divine robe, with the black-gold crown symbolizing the divine authority of the Underworld on my he

In the deepest parts of the mud zone, a nauseating stench of decay and miasma lingered year-round.Nyssa lay like a puddle of rotting mud on the moldy straw, barely clinging to life. Her exquisite face, which had once captivated countless Light Elves, had ulcerated so badly that the white bone underneath was almost visible. The wound where Caelum's longsword had pierced her shoulder, lacking any magic to heal it, had become entirely infected, oozing pus and crawling with dense swarms of maggots.Yet, cursed by the tragic longevity of the High Elves, she simply could not die."Water... give me a sip of water..."Nyssa let out a feeble moan, but apart from the rats scurrying in the mud, no one paid her any attention. The parents who had once held her in the palm of their hands now fought like beasts in a nearby mud pit over half a piece of moldy bread.Suddenly, Nyssa's withered fingers spasmed violently. The royal soul-ring that belonged to Elowen had eerily fused into a bloody mess wit

Thanatos's voice echoed through the grand council hall, every word slamming into the souls of the elves like a heavy hammer. In the hall, the Elven King, highest ruler of the court, finally appeared. Stripped of all pride, he all but rolled off his throne to prostrate himself on the ground before the phantom of Death and me."Great Lord of the Underworld! Honored Emissary!""This is entirely the selfish doing of the Vaelen family and my rebellious son! The royal family... The royal family would never dare disrespect the emissary!"To appease the wrath of the Underworld and save the crumbling World Tree, the Elven King ruthlessly severed all ties."From this moment forth! House Vaelen is stripped of all noble titles! Stripped of all magic and assets!" the Elven King roared his commands. "Banish them to the mud zone of the lowest depths! For eternity, they are forbidden from setting foot in the upper levels!"I looked coldly at the Elven King, so quick to sacrifice his own kin, and scoff

Faced with Caelum's breakdown, his tears, and the gruesome sight of him tearing open his robes with bloody hands to carve out his own heart, I felt absolutely nothing.Inside the hall, there was pin-drop silence. All the nobles, councilors, and commoners held their breath, watching this High Elf prince, once proud for two centuries, now groveling at the bottom of the stairs like a stray dog.I looked at him as one would a disgusting, soiled rag tossed into a puddle of blood."My heart... Look, it only beats for you," Caelum muttered, a madman's gleam in his eyes.Caelum slashed open the flesh of his own chest. Blood gushed out, splashing onto his pristine white robes. The elders in the hall gasped in terror, trying to intervene, but the Underworld's necrotic energy pinned them to the ground, rendering them immobile. The high priest stumbled forward, crawling on his hands and knees. "Your Highness, think twice! If you carve out your core, you will never be the heir to the elven royal fa

Only agonizing wails remained in the hall.Nyssa was on the verge of fainting from the pain. Her gaze, twisted by the torment, finally swept toward Caelum, who was kneeling nearby like a living corpse. This was her final lifeline."Caelum..." Nyssa crawled toward him, spitting up blood mixed with pus, trying to put on a pitiful facade. "I truly didn't know anything about the ledger. I am innocent. My sister has gone mad. Save me...""Are we not... are our souls not bound?""You can't just watch me die..."She reached out, trying to grab the edge of Caelum's moon-white robes. Before she could touch him, Caelum lunged forward, kicking her viciously in the chest and sending her flying. He didn't use any magic, but he used every ounce of his physical strength.Nyssa slammed into a distant stone pillar like a broken ragdoll, vomiting a massive mouthful of black blood.Everyone was stunned.Caelum slowly stood up. As my voice fell, the council hall descended into a deathly silence.Caelum knelt at the bottom of the stairs, clutching his right hand with a hole burned straight through it. His tears smashed against the bone steps. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out."Lord Emissary."The high priest scrambled forward, kowtowing heavily. His voice trembled so much he could barely form a sentence. "Lord Emissary, please forgive him! His Highness... He just lost his composure for a moment...""Lost his composure?"I looked down at this old fool who had once knelt at the altar and declared Nyssa the "child of prophecy.""Years ago, you personally attributed the faith of the Underworld to Nyssa Vaelen's name.""You declared her the child chosen by Death.""You said the entire elven continent needed to pray for her."The blood drained from the high priest's face."I... I...""You didn't mistake the god," I said calmly. "You simply chose the family you wanted to curry favor with."The high priest c
