The drive back to the mansion feels longer than usual. The gates open slowly, deliberately, as if even they hesitate to let me in.

I got out of the car, still deep in thoughts. Trying to figure out what’s really at play here. Why the sudden change in my father’s attitude towards me? What went wrong? What happened? Why has my mother refused to see me as well? What was really their deal with Viktor?

As I entered the house, I froze.

Viktor is waiting in the main hall. Hands clasped behind his back and eyes dark like a troubled dark cloud.

He always knows.

“How was your visit?” he asks calmly.

I didn't answer immediately. “You knew I went.”

“Yes.”

“Did you send someone with me?”

“I don’t need to.”

His eyes study my face carefully.

“He called you,” I say knowingly. “My father.”

Viktor doesn’t deny it.

“He expressed concern.”

“Concern?” I almost laughed. “About what exactly?”

“Your behavior.”

“My behavior? What about it?”

“You forget your position.”

“What position? I do not understand the sick games you and my father are playing. I did not want this. I never wanted this.” I echo.

Viktor steps closer.

“You are not Karelin anymore.”

“I never stopped being one. But unfortunately, I was reminded that I was never one to begin with today.”

He studies me for a long moment.

“Your father agrees.”

The words hit harder than they should. Even though weeks being with this cruel man has taught me tolerance, hearing those words from him made my heart hurt.

“He told you to control me,” I say quietly.

“He reminded me of our arrangement.”

“I am not a dog.”

“No,” Viktor agrees softly. “You are more valuable than that.”

There is something dangerous in his calm.

“I went to ask for work,” I say. “For purpose.”

“You have purpose.”

“Standing beside you at dinners is not the purpose. I am more than that”

His gaze sharpens.

“You are beginning to mistake tolerance for weakness.”

“I am asking for dignity.”

“You are asking for autonomy.”

“And?”

“And that was never part of this.” He replied, still calm.

Something in my chest fractures. “You promised partnership.” I add.

“I promised an alliance.”

“Which includes respect.”

“Respect,” he repeats thoughtfully, “is earned.”

The silence between us thickens.

“I have done nothing but comply,” I say.

“You went back to Karelin.”

“I went to my father.”

“You went back to a name that no longer serves you.”

“It serves me.”

“It undermines me.”

I stare at him. “So this is about your pride.”

“This is about control.”

“Exactly.”

His jaw tightens almost imperceptibly.

“You are emotional,” he says.

“I am human.”

He steps closer. Too close.

“You forget yourself.” And then, swiftly a hard force made contact with my face. The sound is sharp. I didn't even register the movement at first. Just the impact.

And the sudden stillness after. My head turns slightly from the force.

Silence fills the hall.

No shouting.

No chaos.

Just the echo of what happened.

I slowly turn back to face him.

His expression hasn’t changed.

“You will not embarrass me again,” he says evenly. Moving a little bit back from me.

My cheek burns, but I refuse to lift my hand to it. I refuse to let him see me pitiful and broken again.

“You are crueler than him. I wasn’t part of your sick game why I’m I the one paying for it? I’m finally realizing this marriage wasn’t just for business but for something else,” I say quietly.

“Your father, he asked for this. He asked for more power in exchange for his daughter so don’t blame me when all I’m doing is putting you on a leash just like he wanted.”

“And you agreed.”

“I corrected the misunderstanding.”

I stare at him.

“You hit me. Numerous times now. Was it part of the agreement?”

“You tested me.”

“I only asked for help!.”

“You sought weakness.”

“I sought my father.”

“And he reminded you where you belong.”

The cruelty is clinical.

Measured.

“You will not return there without my permission,” Viktor continues. “You will not create uncertainty. You will not forget whose name you carry.”

I feel small.

Smaller than I ever have.

“You are beginning to confuse rebellion with strength,” he says.

“And you are confusing fear with respect.”

For a brief second, something flickers in his eyes.

Then it’s gone.

“You will dine with me tonight,” he says. “You will smile. And tomorrow, you will apologize for today’s lapse.”

“I did nothing wrong.”

“You stepped outside your bounds.“You stepped away from me.”

The truth settles heavy in my stomach.

This was never about Karelin.

It was about ownership.

“Roman won’t be here anymore. He doesn't stay here. He was only here to assist me with some work from home. So you do not have to tolerate him anymore cause I’ve seen how uncomfortable you act when he’s around” he says. His voice hinted at a mockery at the end.

Roman was a concern. I’ve made a decision that he won’t become a problem to me. Whatever happened between us that night, died that night. So him not being here anymore means nothing to me.

“That is not my concern.” I drawled out. Even though a strange emptiness spreads through me.

Roman leaving means distance.

Distance means silence.

“You are alone here,” Viktor says quietly, almost gently. “That is the reality you must accept.”

The finality in his tone is suffocating.

He turns away first

Yet suddenly hearing that Viktor already had dangerous substances in his body before dying made terror spread violently through my chest. Had someone gotten there before me? Had somebody else wanted him dead too? My hands trembled faintly against my lap. I quickly hid them. The detective’s gaze shifted briefly toward me. “Mrs. Morozov, are you alright?” Roman looked at me instantly. I forced myself to nod. “Yes.” Lie. I was absolutely not alright. Roman kept watching me for another second before returning his attention to the detective. “What happens now?” “We continue investigating.” The detective stood slowly. “We may need follow up interviews depending on what else we uncover.” My stomach dropped immediately. Interviews. Questions. More police involvement. Roman rose as well. “Of course.” The detective nodded politely. Then his gaze moved between us carefully. “One more thing.” The room became still again. “We discovered Mr. Morozov had recently increased h

The police arriving at that moment made everything worse. I knew something was wrong the second I saw the black vehicles pulling into the front driveway through the tall living room windows. My stomach tightened immediately, cold dread curling through me as two officers stepped out alongside a man dressed in a dark grey suit carrying a thin folder beneath his arm. Roman noticed them too. He had been seated across from me moments earlier, half distracted by paperwork from the company while tension still lingered heavily between us after everything with Anastasia. He has refused to answer my questions earlier, diverting his attention to the police arrival. The atmosphere inside the mansion had not recovered since that night. Nothing felt normal anymore. Not the silence. Not the glances between us. Not the fear constantly living beneath my skin. Roman slowly lowered the document in his hand, jaw tightening faintly as he stared toward the driveway. “They’re early,” he

A shaky breath left me as I pushed myself off the bed slowly. My legs almost gave out beneath me, exhaustion and panic crashing together violently inside my chest.Nothing felt real anymore. Not Viktor’s death. Not Roman. Not this house.Nothing.I grabbed the robe lying carelessly on the floor and slipped it on hurriedly, tying it tightly around my waist before walking toward the large windows near the far side of the room.Rain had started falling outside.Soft at first.Thin streaks against the dark glass.I wrapped my arms around myself and stared blankly into the night.Roman was downstairs.Probably still arguing with Anastasia. And the worst part? She had won.Maybe not fully.Maybe not yet.But enough.Enough to destroy whatever fragile thing existed between Roman and me.A bitter laugh escaped softly from my lips.Roman Morozov. The same man who kissed me like he would burn the world for me was now going to marry another woman because she held power over us.My chest tightene

The room fell into stunned silence after Anastasia’s words.I could barely hear anything beyond the violent pounding of my heartbeat.Roman stood rigid a few feet away from her, every muscle in his body tense with fury while Anastasia remained perfectly composed.Like she had walked in here tonight expecting this exact moment.Like she had already planned every move ahead of us.Roman laughed once suddenly.Cold.Disbelieving.“You’ve lost your mind.”Anastasia’s expression never changed.“Not at all.”“You break into my house, take pictures, accuse Elena of murder, and now you think you can threaten us?”“I’m not threatening you.” She tilted her head slightly. “I’m giving you options.”My grip tightened harder around the sheets.“This is insane,” I whispered.Anastasia ignored me completely. Her eyes stayed fixed on Roman.“You’re already engaged to me anyway,” she said smoothly. “This simply speeds things up.”Roman’s jaw tightened sharply.“You really think blackmail is going to ma

Much later, silence finally settled across the room.Heavy breathing slowly softened while Roman lay beside me, one arm loosely wrapped around my waist beneath the sheets. The dim bedside lamp cast soft gold across the room while exhaustion pulled heavily at my body. For the first time in days, Everything felt quiet. Safe.Roman’s fingers traced absentminded circles against my skin while my head rested against his chest listening to the slow rhythm of his heartbeat.Neither of us spoke. We simply stayed there tangled together beneath the blankets, bodies warm against each other in the darkness.Then…. A Clap. The sound sliced sharply through the silence. My eyes flew open instantly.Another clap followed slowly.Deliberately.Cold dread crashed through me.Roman jerked upright beside me at the exact same moment I did. Then a camera snap flashed brightly through the room.My breath stopped. Standing near the doorway, was Anastasia smiling slowly while lowering her phone. The sound of

The tension from our earlier argument still lingered in the space between us, but it cracked under the weight of his urgent kiss as his mouth claimed mine with a hunger that spoke of days apart, tongues sliding deep as his free hand cupped the back of my neck. My body responded instantly, my breasts pressing against his chest through the thin fabric of my dress, nipples hardening as a soft moan escaped my lips . "Elena, I need you," Roman whispered against my lips, guiding me towards his body with commanding steps. "Get on top of me. Now."I agreed without hesitation, sliding into the other seat as he started kissing my face all over. , the world outside fading into shadows. The initial silence stretched for a heartbeat, heavy with everything unsaid, until he stared at me for a while, his voice low and steady. "I'm sorry for pushing you away on the trip. I was wrong, and I hate that it brought you here alone." My fingers trembled as I roamed my hands over his chest, my apolo
