Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
When I returned to the office, I sat in my chair and rolled over to the window, looking down at the lights of thousands of homes.

Behind me, the office door opened.

"I heard Celia took the murderer's case as defense counsel. Has she lost her mind? And they said the key evidence disappeared too. What happened?"

I looked back at my closest partner.

Evelyn Frost was one of the few women attorneys at our firm, dressed in a white suit, sharp and fearless.

I leaned back, closed my eyes, and let my voice drift lightly through the room.

"The day after my mother died, she came to see me. She comforted me for a few minutes, then left. After she left, the evidence was gone."

The key evidence was a ring.

When my mother arrived at the hospital, she'd been gripping it tightly in her hand. There was blood on it from two people.

That ring could directly identify the killer.

But now Celia was arguing that the murderer had been drunk, that my mother attacked him, and that he'd had no choice but to defend himself.

So in truth, the ring wasn't enough anymore.

What I had to prove now was that Marcus hadn't acted in self-defense. Even if he'd been drinking, he was conscious, intentional, malicious. He beat and injured my mother on purpose.

Evelyn's gaze grew complicated. "If you couldn't find the evidence, didn't you suspect her?"

I was silent for a while.

In front of the partner I'd trusted for years, I finally let the ugliest part of myself show.

I raised a hand over my eyes. My mouth was smiling, but tears slid silently from the corners of my eyes into my hair.

How could I explain it?

When I was keeping vigil outside my mother's ICU room, I was still worrying about why Celia had suddenly disappeared.

I worried her parents had dragged her home to force her into marriage.

I worried she'd been threatened by some unreasonable client.

But the one thing I never imagined was that, during the most desperate stretch of my hospital vigil, she was with her ex, planning with the murderer how he could escape legal consequences.

Even the moment she came to my home and stole the evidence, stabbing me in the back, I was still worrying whether her own case would succeed.

My mother had never really liked her.

But before my mother died, I'd argued with her about marrying Celia.

"I regret it so much..."

I turned my chair away from Evelyn, my face streaked with tears.

Evelyn said nothing.

She waited until my emotions had passed, then came behind me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Then what about the appeal? Do you have a chance?"

I lowered my hand and looked into the night.

I only smiled.

In my eyes, there was nothing but the confidence and certainty I'd built through my profession.

Over the years, whenever Celia had a difficult case, I'd been the one handling it behind the scenes. I knew exactly what she was capable of.

As her boyfriend, I'd thought everything about her was good.

But as a professional attorney, Celia was only average. She wasn't even as capable as the interns at Sterling & Howe.

The small reputation she had in the legal circle was only because every case she took had passed through my hands first.

I broke down the key points for her, searched the statutes, and even wrote her arguments. All she had to do was stand in court and recite what I'd prepared. Nothing could go wrong.

But I'd raised a thankless wolf.

Maybe the praise outside had gone to her head. Maybe she really believed her current fame and honor came from herself.

She couldn't see herself clearly anymore.

Standing in the same courtroom as me.

Was she worthy?

I slowly straightened my cuffs."Mr. Graham, maybe you don't know this. Recently, my mother died. She was beaten to death. The man who did it was her ex-boyfriend, and she served as his defense attorney."The owner's expression changed immediately. He couldn't help rolling his eyes, then turned and left.Celia's face went deathly pale."Can we really not go back?"I was too tired to argue about that question anymore.Celia smiled bitterly and said she wouldn't bother me again. She had bought a ticket to another state and would build her career in another city. She'd never come back here.Barring any accident, today would be the last time we saw each other.Celia poured me a glass of iced tea."I remember this is your favorite here."I tilted my head back and drank. Then I picked up my briefcase."That's it. We'll never meet again."Celia didn't move.I had just stood up when dizziness washed over my eyes, and I lost control and sat back down.Tears clung to Celia's face a

I didn't stop walking.I could roughly guess why Celia had been chasing me all this time. Maybe she regretted it.After Marcus went to prison, her true love was gone. Looking around, she realized I was the best man she could ever get, so she wanted to crawl back to me.She could choose never to marry, but would her parents let her go?She was at that age.But I wasn't someone she could use so easily anymore. As soon as I got back, I gave instructions around the firm.A lawyer who offended a famous law firm wouldn't survive easily in this circle.Soon, Celia stopped daring to pester me.The last time she came to see me, she begged for mercy."I promise I won't bother you again. Please leave me a way out."If I can't survive in this city, I'll have to go home and marry whoever they choose. You know what my parents are like."The reason I kept chasing you was because of that. I sent them your photos and lied that we'd eventually get married. That's why they stopped coming here

After that, I didn't see Celia again. But the legal circle was only so large, so I inevitably heard news about her.She eventually transferred the inheritance case to someone else. It was the smartest choice. She couldn't handle such a large case. But at the same time, she offended the client. That rich family's illegitimate son wasn't a kind person. He wouldn't let it go easily.I didn't know what he did to Celia. She didn't seem to be in trouble. Instead, she appeared in front of me again, perfectly fine. After the previous two incidents, I wanted to call security immediately.Celia hurriedly stopped me in panic."I just wanted to see you. I heard you took another major case. When you're busy, you forget to eat. I was worried your stomach pain would come back..."I made you a lunchbox. Remember to eat. I'll leave now."She placed the lunchbox at the front desk, looked at me reluctantly, and left.I stared at her back, my brows tightly furrowed.I had no idea what trick she

After that, I knew the scene I'd seen at court hadn't been an accident.Celia's ability was mediocre, but she didn't seem to realize it. Over the years, with my help, she'd taken credit for everything and grown arrogant. She dared accept any case.If she kept going like that, she was bound to crash. One day, I heard she had taken on another major complicated case. When I arrived at the firm, everyone was discussing it.Celia had accepted a case even Sterling & Howe was hesitating over.It involved a large estate split among multiple heirs. People from old-money families were never easy to deal with. The moment I heard it, I knew something was wrong.Sure enough, when I got home that night, there was a dark figure standing in the hallway. The voice-activated light came on. Celia lifted her head, and her eyes brightened."Julian, I've been waiting for you for a long time."I walked to my door but didn't open it."What do you want?"Celia looked at me timidly. "Won't you inv

When I got back, I fired the intern. He sobbed and begged, saying his family was poor and Celia had offered him money, so he couldn't refuse.I felt no pity and had security drag him out.Someone like that didn't deserve to stay at Sterling & Howe.Celia lost this case miserably. But it didn't damage her reputation much. After all, everyone loses sometimes.Especially attorneys. You win some, you lose some. With the reputation she'd built under my help, many people still came to her for cases. But without me, how could she maintain her old glory?Within less than a month, Celia's real ability was exposed, and her reputation in the legal world began to slide.I took half a month off and traveled for a while.I went to the places I'd once promised my mother I'd take her, the places we never got to visit. The day I returned, the weather was bright and clear.Evelyn handed me a cup of coffee and patted my arm."Court tomorrow. Confident?"Even while traveling, I hadn't forgo

When I lifted my head again, the judge's face was full of fury.Celia's face had gone gray. She collapsed back into her chair. The outcome was decided. She had no chance to turn it around. With the evidence clear and the facts established, the judge pronounced judgment on the spot. Marcus Lane was sentenced to life in prison.I won.Marcus screamed in panic and despair."Impossible! Celia, you bitch, did you screw me over on purpose? Didn't you say we'd definitely win?"Celia couldn't stop trembling."Wait."I looked at Marcus. "Tell me why. She was about to close up for the night, but when she saw you, she still made you a bowl of soup. Why were you so cruel to her?"Marcus laughed like a madman."Because of you!"I heard her talking to someone on the phone. She mentioned her lawyer son, said how outstanding you were, how successful you were. Everyone in the world gets to live so proudly, so why the hell was I so miserable?"So I beat her to death. Just thinking about how
