Chapter 2

Author: Miss Fine
"Lucas… My stomach hurts…" whimpered Cecelia. She suddenly bent over with a whimper, and her face turned pale.

Lucas's expression instantly changed. He ignored Gia and rushed back to Cecelia. He held her anxiously and asked, "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"

His voice trembled with worry, and his hands were shaking.

The sight felt like a sharp knife stabbing into her heart. Gia once believed this heartfelt concern of his was reserved only for herself.

She had been naive. She was never the only one.

"I'll take you to the hospital," he said. Without giving Gia a second glance, Lucas swept Cecelia up into his arms and carried her out.

Gia let out a bitter laugh when the door closed. "I've been delusional all this time…" she murmured.

She wondered why she had turned a blind eye in her past life.

Three hours later, Lucas returned with Cecelia still in his arms. The moment they stepped into the living room, he spoke firmly, "She needs to rest for a few days. It's settled–she'll stay here."

Gia paused for only a moment before replying calmly, "Alright."

Her voice and expression were apathetic.

He seemed surprised she agreed so easily. His face softened after a brief look of disbelief. He said, "Cecelia's been through a lot, and she's pregnant now. She has nowhere else to go. I know you've always been kind–"

"Pick any room you want. I'm heading back to mine," interrupted Gia. She turned before he could finish and walked away without hesitation.

She did not want to listen to his guilt-tripping. It sounded like praises, but they were accusations of her being immature and unkind.

That night, Gia took the divorce papers she had prepared and knocked on the door of his study.

He sat deeply focused in front of his laptop and had a few books in front of him. One glance was all it took for Gia to see that the books were pregnancy nutrition guides.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"What is it?" he asked without looking up.

She bit her lip and handed over the documents. She demanded, "Sign it. It's for the company's filing, and it needs the signature of a family member."

Lucas barely glanced at it before signing, then he stood up quickly. He said, "Done. I need to make dinner for Cecelia. Her diet needs special care, so from now on, I'll cook for her myself."

Gia looked at the papers and asked quietly, "When did you learn to cook?"

Lucas had never lifted a finger at home in her past life. Obsessed with his research and busy at the lab, she had always felt sorry for him and cooked every meal herself.

Lucas hesitated and replied, "I recently learned… Cecelia's in a special stage in life, and as her friend, I should take care of her."

"Is that so?" asked Gia. She did not look at him, but her voice was soft like a whisper as she said, "We've been married for three years, and you've never cooked for me."

Yes. He had never cooked for her.

She believed his career came first back then and never asked for more. However, the comparison was glaring. He simply had not wanted to make an effort for her.

Lucas froze, and he was about to say something, but Gia walked away with the papers.

A faint aroma drifted through the air. She stood by the window in her room unmovingly.

She carefully put away the divorce papers.

She only needed to wait. Once the asset transfers were complete and the mandatory waiting period passed, she could leave for good.

The silk tree they had planted together outside on their wedding day had grown thick and lush.

She remembered a long time ago when Lucas knelt beneath it and held up a ring, his eyes full of devotion.

"Gia, I want to spend a lifetime with you, and even in death, I will never betray you," he had promised.

Her phone vibrated. It was a message from her lawyer.

[Ms. Rowan, eighty percent of the assets have been transferred. The rest will be handled before the divorce process begins.]

[Gia: Okay.] She then deleted the conversation.

She slipped the wedding ring off her finger and placed it in the bottom drawer of her vanity.

She heard the sound of laughter and cheerful voices coming from outside. She closed her eyes, caught between the weight of her past life and the sting of the present, until a single tear slipped free.

Some mistakes, she thought, were only worth making once in a lifetime.

Lucas was lost in a dream that seemed to stretch on forever. He saw Gia as she was back in college, dressed in a simple white dress, waiting for him outside the lab with a steaming bowl of hot cereal. Her smile was like sunshine as she teased, "You've got to take care of yourself, no more all-nighters in the lab, okay?"Then he was back on their wedding day, her hand in his, her voice a soft murmur against the chorus of well-wishes, "Let's make a promise, Lucas. Every year, a new adventure, just us. And when we're old? A quiet town, a garden, a couple of cats..."In his dream, she was curled up against him, her voice a gentle whisper, "Lucas, are you sure you don't want kids?"He just laughed, shook his head, and kissed her. "Nope, all I need is you."He remembered pushing Cecelia away when she showed up in disarray, handing her a wad of cash. "Get away from that guy. This should help you start fresh, the life you deserve."When his parents would not stop nagging about grandkids,

The steady beep of the heart monitor filled the room as Lucas lay on the hospital bed. He was ghostly pale, his abdomen was swathed in thick bandages, and his breath barely lifted his chest. The doctor removed his mask, shaking his head at Shane and Linda waiting outside. "The patient's been through a lot and has lost a lot of blood. Whether he wakes up... that's on him now."Linda's knees buckled, and she crumpled to the floor, sobbing, "If my son doesn't wake up, I swear I'll make that homewrecker pay!""Enough!" snapped the nurse, losing patience. "Your yelling isn't helping. He needs peace and quiet. Everyone, out!"Down the hall, a few nurses on duty traded gossip in hushed tones."Hey, have you heard? That guy in there was the guy who fought over a blood bag for his side chick against his own wife.""What goes around comes around!""His parents are no saints either. The whole lot of them mooching off others and still trying to grab all the perks..."Linda lunged forward w

Cecelia was even more gaunt than before. Her cheekbones jutted out like she was part skull, but her eyes were alarmingly bright. When she saw him, she flicked the knife she was holding across a baby's cheek."Where's the money?"Lucas limped a step closer, "What kind of mother hurt her baby? You...""Enough talk! Where's the money?!"Cecelia's face was twisted in a snarl, almost unrecognizable to Lucas."If I had any money left, I wouldn't have asked you for help, would I? The lab's shut down..."Cecelia's scream pierced the air. "Then go beg Gia! She's loaded, and she adores you! Why not beg her?!"Lucas felt a sharp pang in his heart.Yes, Gia had adored him. Everyone knew it except him, and he had not treasured her. Where did that get him?"I did beg..." Lucas's voice was barely a whisper. "But she'd rather see me dead."Cecelia stopped in her tracks, then burst into a harsh, mocking laugh. "Serves you right! Hahaha! You had it coming, Lucas!"Her voice was raspy, her ey

Lucas seemed to realize that no matter how many cuts he made, no matter how much blood he shed, it would not make things right with Gia. Blood once spilled could not be taken back.He could not accept it, though. He tried to stir up Gia's memories with all the good times they had had.Once he had gotten a grip on himself, he led Gia out, his face ghostly pale."Remember how we used to go shopping? I'd push the cart while you'd pick out whatever you wanted..."Gia snorted, giving her tied-up hands a shake. "You mean like this?"Her hands were out of sight under her coat, hidden from view.Lucas's cheeks flushed with a fleeting embarrassment before he whispered soothingly, "Gia, just hang in there... Once we get back to the way things were, it'll all be different.""There's no going back," replied Gia, her voice steady and cool. "We can never go back."A look of agony crossed Lucas's face. He seemed on the verge of a wild outburst, but he held it back."I can't accept that, Gia.

Gia slowly woke up to the world's bumps and jolts. She could hear Lucas's breaths, quick and panicked. She shifted and felt the tightness of her bound limbs.Even though she was at his mercy, she looked serene.Lucas caught the sound of her stirring, his eyes darting to her in the rearview mirror. His grip on the steering wheel was so tight his knuckles blanched. "Gia... please, don't look at me like that. I just... I just need to talk to you, really talk," he pleaded. The car veered sharply, and Gia could not quite place where they were. She rubbed at the ropes around her wrists, the rough fibers biting into her skin.Lucas kept talking to himself, "I've got your favorite Marigold... and I've mastered making your favorite Black Forest cake..."Her head still felt heavy, and she closed her eyes, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of her gaze. Before long, the car pulled up in front of a rundown house.Lucas lifted her out, his fingers brushing against a long scar on her w

From that day forward, Lucas was a fixture outside Gia's company, undeterred by rain or shine. The bodyguard, for what felt like the millionth time, warned him. "Ms. Rowan says she'll call the cops if she sees you here again.""I'll wait..." Lucas's voice was a raspy shadow of itself, "I'll wait until she's ready to talk..."A familiar figure appeared at the entrance. Gia, surrounded by top executives, walked out in a sleek black designer suit that made her look even more untouchable.Lucas lurched forward, only to be stopped cold by a bodyguard's iron grip on his arm."Gia..." Lucas fought against the hold, tumbling to the ground. "I messed up, please, just look at me..."However, Gia did not break stride. Her assistant, unable to contain his curiosity, whispered, "Ms. Rowan, who is that guy acting crazy?""I don't know him," replied Gia emotionlessly. She glanced at her watch and asked, "Is everything set for the interview?"Cars sped past, one of them showering Lucas with a
