Bella's POV

Dorian looked at the figure I had pointed out, then turned back to the summary.

“Is there a problem?” I asked.

“I haven't decided yet.”

“That sounds reassuring.”

“Would you prefer me to invent an answer?”

“No. I'd prefer one that exists.”

The corner of his mouth lifted. “Good. We're off to a promising start.”

“I'm glad one of us thinks so.”

He placed the file beside his laptop. “Take it home. Review it tonight and bring me your observations tomorrow morning.”

“I thought my first day was supposed to involve learning how things work around here, not taking work home.”

“This is part of it. You'll ask better questions when you have time to read without me looking over your shoulder.”

I couldn't decide whether that was a compliment or another attempt to irritate me.

Probably both.

“Don't contact anyone about the figures yet,” he added. “If there's a simple explanation, we should establish that before involving other people.”

“Fine. I'll review it.”

I reached for the file, but he kept one hand on it for another second.

“One more thing, Bella.”

“Mr. Ashford.”

“We're alone. You don't have to sound as though you're addressing a courtroom.”

“I'm trying to maintain a professional relationship with my employer.”

“By calling him Mr. Ashford every thirty seconds?”

“I haven't done that.”

“Give it time.”

I stared at him until he released the file.

“Eight o'clock tomorrow,” he said.

“I know how to read a calendar.”

“Excellent. That should make your first assignment easier.”

I tucked the file under my arm. “Do you always make your employees work this hard on their first day?”

“Only the ones who argue with me.”

“Then I suppose I should be grateful you're making an exception.”

“I haven't decided whether I am.”

I left before he could have the last word. Unfortunately, I was smiling by the time I reached my desk.

---

I'd barely finished logging into my computer when Tessa approached with a tablet.

“Settling in all right?”

“I'm still deciding.”

She laughed. “Fair enough. Welcome officially to Ashford Technologies, Bella. It's nice to have you here.”

“Thank you. And thanks for showing me in earlier. I was too busy trying not to embarrass myself in the interview to look around properly.”

“You did better than you think.” She glanced towards Dorian's office. “If you survived your first meeting with him, you're off to a good start.”

“Is he always infuriatingly pleased with himself?”

Tessa pressed her lips together, fighting a smile. “I'll let you discover that for yourself.”

“So you admit there's something to discover.”

“I admit nothing.”

She pulled a chair beside my desk and handed me the tablet.

“I coordinate Dorian's schedule, manage his meetings, handle his executive correspondence, and make sure the people who need his attention actually get it. You'll be working closely with me, so ask if you're unsure about anything. Don't spend an hour figuring it out alone.”

“That sounds like advice from experience.”

“You have no idea.”

She walked me through Dorian's schedule, the internal contact list, and the shared drives, explaining how meetings were arranged, where documents belonged, and which requests needed his approval.

“His calendar changes throughout the day,” she warned. “And confirm meeting details before sending invitations. He hates correcting avoidable mistakes.”

“Does he hate mistakes, or does he hate telling people they've made them?”

“Both, probably.”

I laughed.

By the time we finished, my notebook was full, and I had a much clearer idea of what my job involved.

“Anything else I should know?” I asked.

“Don't assume he wants something done a particular way just because he asked for it once. If the situation changes, he expects you to use your judgment.”

“Does he explain that to everyone?”

“No. I think he assumes people will figure it out.”

“That sounds convenient for him.”

Tessa grinned. “You'll fit in just fine.”

I started working through the morning's requests. While preparing the presentation for Dorian's ten thirty meeting, I spotted two figures in the notes that didn't match the slides. I corrected the formatting and flagged both figures.

At ten fifteen, I knocked on his door.

“Come in.”

He stood by the windows, phone to his ear, and raised a finger for me to wait.

“No, renaming the same file isn't a correction. I want the actual changes made,” he said before ending the call. He turned to me. “What is it?”

“Your presentation is ready, but two figures in the notes don't match the slides.”

“Which ones?”

I showed him.

He checked both. “Good catch. Remove those figures from the summary until they're confirmed. Have the updated version ready before the meeting.”

“Of course.”

I turned towards the door.

“Bella.”

I looked back. “Yes, Mr. Ashford?”

“You don't have to ask permission every time you notice something.”

“I wasn't asking permission. I was checking whether you needed anything else.”

“Then stop looking as though you're waiting for me to tell you you've done something wrong.”

“I don't.”

“You do.”

I folded my arms. “Perhaps that's because my boss has spent the morning making it clear that he enjoys finding fault with me.”

“I've corrected you twice.”

“Three times, if we're counting the nickname.”

“That's not a correction. It's a preference.”

“Your preference.”

“Mine, yes.”

I stared at him. He looked perfectly comfortable, which only made him more irritating.

“I'll have the presentation ready,” I said.

“I know.”

His quiet certainty caught me off guard. I returned to my desk and finished the corrections, then sent him the updated presentation.

  • The Devil At My Desk    A Night of Unfamiliar Honesty

Bella’s POVLater, I returned to the table for water and found Dorian standing beside it.“Having a good evening?” he asked.“An excellent one.”“I can see that.”“Are you always this observant?”“It's part of my job.”“You’re not working right now.”“Apparently, neither are you.”I laughed. My eyes drifted over him again, taking in his rolled sleeves and the absence of a tie.“You look different outside the office.”“Different how?”“Less terrifying.”“That's disappointing.”“And more handsome.”His expression changed.I should have stopped there, but the words kept coming.“It’s actually rather unfair. You were irritating enough at seventeen. You didn’t need to become attractive as well.”For once, Dorian Ashford had no immediate response.I was delighted. He leaned closer so I could hear him over the music.“Should I be concerned about what else you might say tonight?”“Probably.”He laughed, then studied my face.“How much have you had to drink, Bella?”“Enough to tell the truth.

  • The Devil At My Desk    The Trouble with Letting Go

Bella’s POVI told myself I hadn’t heard anything important.Dorian had been on the phone when I reached the entrance to his office on Monday evening. I’d caught a few sentences before he noticed the noise and looked up.The announcement can wait until we have everything agreed.No. My decision hasn’t changed.I thought about the call during the cab ride home, but I eventually let it go. I had been staying at my parents’ house for a few days while repairs in my apartment were completed, and I was relieved to finally return to my own space. On my first day at Ashford Technologies, I’d taken a cab because I hadn’t felt like driving. Facing Dorian again had been enough stress without adding New York traffic to the experience.Whatever he was planning, it was his business. On Tuesday evening, Elodie called. My best friend was an artist whose creative projects could change direction without warning. We caught up on her latest painting, my new job, and how little time we’d spent together la

  • The Devil At My Desk    A Different Side of Her

Dorian’s POV“She is.”“You sound certain.”“I hired her, Callum. I've had time to form an opinion.”“Of course you have.”I opened the folder she'd brought. “Are we going to discuss the security assessment?”“Of course.”We spent the next twenty minutes reviewing the access arrangements for his team. Callum wanted to make sure the initial assessment was limited to the necessary systems and that the original records couldn't be altered during the process. I agreed with the principle, but one part of the schedule needed clarification before I could approve it.A knock sounded at the door.Bella stepped in again. “Sorry. I wanted to check something before I send these documents out.”“Go ahead,” I said. She glanced at the schedule in front of Callum.“Is this the access plan for the first stage of the review?”“Yes,” Callum said.“Should the team have access to change the archived records at this point?”“No,” he replied. “They should be able to read them, but not change them.”“That's

  • The Devil At My Desk    The Things He Notices

Dorian’s POVBy eight thirty on Monday evening, I had read the same paragraph four times.I closed the document, pushed my chair back, and reached for the glass of water beside my laptop. It was nearly empty.Bella Marlowe had been in my office for less than a day, yet I'd spent an unreasonable amount of time thinking about her.Every time I returned to the financial proposal, I remembered her question that morning. She hadn't accused anyone of making a mistake. She'd simply pointed out that the figures didn't match and waited for me to explain why.I hadn't had an answer. It was irritating. It was also one of the reasons I'd hired her.In high school, Bella had never been good at letting an argument go. She'd find a flaw in whatever you said and keep pushing until you either admitted it or gave her another reason to prove you wrong. I used to think she enjoyed making people uncomfortable.Perhaps she did. I certainly hadn't enjoyed being on the receiving end.The woman who'd walked i

Bella’s POVAround noon, Tessa appeared beside my desk.“Lunch?”“Is that an invitation or an instruction?”“An invitation. I save the instructions for when you start making mistakes.”“Comforting.”I saved my work and followed her downstairs. While we waited for our food, she asked what had made me apply to Ashford Technologies.“I've always been interested in technology. I want to understand how companies build things, how systems work, and how the right decisions can change the way a business operates.”“Well, you're in the right place to learn.”“That's the plan.”“And don't worry about getting everything right immediately. Nobody expects you to know the whole company on your first day.”“Tell that to my boss.”Tessa laughed. “I'm beginning to think you two have history.”I nearly choked on my drink.“We went to school together.”“You knew Dorian before you applied?”“Unfortunately.”“Was he always this charming?”“No. He's actually gotten worse.”Tessa laughed, drawing a glance f
