Kyren

Sending that text was the hardest thing I'd ever done.

*Anna*

One word that felt like signing my own death warrant. Or maybe Alastair's. I stared at my phone for ten minutes after hitting send, my thumb hovering over the screen like I could somehow take it back, rewrite the message, choose differently.

But the choice had been made. Anna was my fiancée, my family's political alliance, the woman I'd sworn to protect.

Whatever I felt for Alastair couldn't override those responsibilities, no matter how much it was tearing me apart inside.

My conscience felt like it was eating me alive from the inside out.

The response came three hours later, long enough for me to pace my apartment like a caged animal and second-guess every decision I'd made in the past month. When my phone finally buzzed, I grabbed it so fast I nearly dropped it.

*Pier 47. Warehouse 12. Come alone, but bring your dogs. Midnight.*

"Leo! Marco!" I called, already reaching for my jacket.

They appeared within seconds,

Kyren"I found you," I said, holding her close and trying to feel something other than hollow numbness. "You're safe now.""They blindfolded me almost immediately. I have no idea where I was or who took me." Anna pulled back to look at my face, her hands framing my cheeks with desperate affection. "But you came for me. I knew you would.""Of course I did." The words felt automatic, like lines from a script I'd memorized. "I'll always come for you."She kissed me then, soft and grateful and full of the kind of trust that made my chest tight with guilt. Because she believed in me, believed in us, believed that I'd chosen her because she mattered most to me.When she really had no idea what that choice had cost."I should call your father," I said, reaching for my phone. "Let him know you're safe.""In a minute." Anna curled against my side, her head resting on my shoulder. "I just want to stay like this for a while."The first call was to Miguel, who answered before the first ring finis

  • The Devil You Made Me   The Choice revealed

AlastairThe room they put me in was nothing like what I'd expected from a kidnapping. It had clean white walls, polished hardwood floors, and a bed that looked more comfortable than the one in my own apartment. There was even a small sitting area with two chairs and a coffee table, like something you'd find in an upscale hotel. It was the kind of place designed to confuse rather than terrorize.I sat on the edge of the bed and tried to make sense of what was happening. Anna being taken first, the comfortable accommodations, none of it felt random.Someone had orchestrated this carefully, and I was beginning to suspect I knew exactly who.The sound of approaching footsteps confirmed my suspicions.Luciano entered the room like he was arriving for a social visit, his expensive suit perfectly tailored and his handsome face lit up with genuine pleasure. He looked relaxed, almost cheerful, like a man whose plans were unfolding exactly as he'd hoped."Alastair," he said warmly, his smile

  • The Devil You Made Me   Midnight decision

KyrenThe drive back to my apartment was conducted in tense silence. Leo and Marco were both professionals who understood that sometimes there was nothing useful to say, that action was more valuable than empty reassurances. But the lack of concrete progress was eating at me like acid."Could it be someone else?" I asked as we pulled into my building's garage. "Someone other than Luciano?""Possible," Leo said. "But the timing suggests otherwise. He's been building toward something for weeks, and taking Anna would be the perfect way to hurt you without directly attacking your family.""What about Alastair?""Collateral damage," Marco suggested. "Or leverage to make sure you take the threat seriously.""Or bait," Leo added grimly. "If Luciano knows about your... relationship... with him, he might be using that to complicate your decision-making process."The observation hit uncomfortably close to home. Because that's exactly what was happening, the presence of Alastair in that photo ha

  • The Devil You Made Me   Impossible choice

KyrenThe photo arrived at exactly 3:47 PM, just as I was reviewing security reports from the previous night's attack on Alastair. My phone buzzed with an unknown number, and when I opened the message, my blood turned to ice.Two figures bound to chairs in what looked like an abandoned warehouse. Anna on the left, her blonde hair disheveled but her posture still dignified despite her obvious fear. Alastair on the right, a bruise darkening his left cheek but his green eyes blazing with defiant fury even through the restraints.Below the image, a simple message: *Choose one. You have 24 hours.*My hands were shaking as I stared at the screen. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be real. Someone was asking me to choose between my fiancée and the man who'd become an obsession I couldn't control.Anyone who knew me, who understood my position and responsibilities, would expect me to choose Anna without hesitation. She was my intended wife, the alliance that secured my family's politi

  • The Devil You Made Me   Kidnapped

Alastair"What exactly are you asking me to do?""Nothing too complicated. Just... don't interfere when the time comes." Luciano's smile was warm and completely without sincerity. "When Anna disappears, don't call Kyren to warn him. Don't try to play hero. Just let justice take its course."The threat was delivered with such casual pleasantness that it took a moment to register. He'd been behind the attack. The four masked men, the knife, the desperate fight for my life, all of it had been Luciano testing my loyalty, measuring my usefulness."You tried to have me killed.""I tried to see how you'd react under pressure. Whether you'd run to Kyren for protection or handle the situation yourself." He shrugged. "The results were... illuminating.""You're insane.""I'm grief-stricken. There's a difference." His expression grew cold again. "My sister is dead because of Kyren. I won't rest until he's paid for that crime in full.""And what about me? What happens after you've gotten your reve
