After a while, Lucian finally broke the stalemate. “We’ll question him. After that, we decide what to do with you.”

Lisbeth’s expression didn’t change, but Ayra saw the way her sister’s hands curled loosely on her knees—open enough to seem calm, but not quite relaxed. Ayra knew that look; it was the posture Lisbeth had when she was already thinking ten steps ahead.

They didn’t speak much as Lucian dragged another chair over and set it facing Lisbeth. The chair scraped against the floor with a sound that felt too loud in the still room. Ayra stayed near the bound man slumped in the corner, keeping him in the edge of her vision.

Lucian sat, his elbows resting on his knees. “We’re going to skip the small talk. How are you still alive?”

Lisbeth’s lips curved, but it wasn’t quite a smile. “By not dying.”

Ayra folded her arms. “Don’t play games with me, Lisbeth. I went to your funeral. I stood over the coffin.”

“I know,” Lisbeth said softly, her voice losing that teasing edge for just a mo

They were just settling in when a sudden, sharp knock broke through the quiet. Not the polite kind, either. Three firm raps, deliberate.Lucian’s head came up instantly.Ayra was already halfway to her feet. “I’ll get it.”He frowned. “I’ll—”“No.” She crossed to the coat rack where her jacket hung, fishing something from the inner pocket. The matte glint of her sidearm caught the light. “You’re exhausted. You’ve been running around all day checking the perimeter. Sit.”“Ayra—”She cut him off with a level look. “If it’s nothing, you can tell me I overreacted. If it’s something… I’m faster tonight than you are.”He hesitated, jaw tightening, but finally eased back against the cushions. “Two minutes. That’s all you get before I come after you.”“Fair,” she said, and slipped into the hallway, the door closing behind her with a soft click while she snagged a gun from a cupboard in the corridor. The silence that followed stretched. One minute. Then two.Lucian shifted restlessly, listenin

The fire was little more than glowing embers now, painting the room in a low orange haze. Ayra shifted slightly in Lucian’s arms, tucking her legs beneath her, her head resting against his chest.“You’re awfully quiet,” she murmured.“Just… thinking.” His voice vibrated against her ear.“That’s dangerous,” she teased. He huffed a soft laugh, but it didn’t quite hide the weight in his tone. “There’s something I should’ve told you sooner.”She pulled back enough to see his face. “That sounds ominous.”“It’s not something new,” he said. “But it’s important. The Wendells… they didn’t just decide to come after you recently. They’ve been after you since the day we signed the marriage contract.”Ayra blinked, her brain catching on the past tense. “Wait—since then? That was… years ago. Why?”“That’s the part I could never figure out,” he admitted. “It wasn’t about me, at least not entirely. They wanted leverage. And you were…” He paused, his gaze softening. “You were precious to me. They knew

The day unfolded without a hitch—at least on the surface. If anyone else had been watching, they might have thought it was simply a slow, ordinary day in the middle of nowhere. A safe day.But to Lucian, it wasn’t ordinary at all. Because every time he caught sight of Ayra, every time her eyes flicked toward him or her hair brushed her cheek in that maddening way, he couldn’t keep the grin from tugging at his mouth. It wasn’t even subtle—he knew it, and he didn’t care. What he did care about, apparently, was touching her. Constantly. When she stood by the kitchen counter rinsing a mug, his hand skimmed her lower back on his way past. When she bent to feed the cat that had started hanging around their doorstep, he leaned over her shoulder, his breath teasing her ear. And when she tried to fold laundry, he sat beside her, took the shirt from her hands, and let his fingers linger against hers far longer than necessary.“Lucian,” she finally said around midday, narrowing her eyes even as

Silence. The air between them felt charged, every second stretching thin.Lucian’s voice was careful. “Say it again.”“I…” Her breath trembled, tears threatening to rise to her eyes. “I was there, Lucian.”His eyes searched hers, looking for the lie that wasn’t there. Slowly, like someone approaching the edge of a cliff, he said, “Isa?”The name settled into the room like a stone into still water.Ayra’s eyes burned. “I didn’t remember. Heck, I still DON'T. Not much. But—God—every time you’ve talked about her, about us, it’s like pulling on a thread. And now I can’t not see it.”Lucian’s hand came up, brushing her hair back as though he needed to see all of her face. His thumb traced her cheekbone, slower this time. “You’re telling me…” His voice caught. “You’ve been Isa all along.”Her throat tightened. “I-I guess so. No. I am.”For a long time he didn’t speak. His gaze was locked on hers, and in it she saw the years between then and now—the boy he’d been, the man he’d become, the sp

Ayra woke to the slow drag of breath against the back of her neck. For a moment she thought she was dreaming—still caught in the warm, unhurried haze of last night—but then Lucian’s arm shifted against her waist. His palm was flat against her stomach, fingers splayed in a way that felt both protective and deliberate. The heat of him was right there, pressed along the entire line of her body. Her mind was sluggish, but her senses weren’t. The quiet weight of him behind her. The faint rasp of stubble against her temple when he moved his head. The slow, steady pressure of his thigh shifting between hers.It took her only another second to realise—this wasn’t just idle closeness.“Lucian,” she murmured, half-asleep, half-alert.He didn’t stop, but he didn’t push it further either. His breath warmed the shell of her ear.“Morning,” he said lowly, voice gravelled from sleep. Her pulse had already started its traitorous climb. They’d skirted the edge of this too many times—little looks, acc
