Markus tapped my knee while we were in the waiting area of the OB-GYN.
“Nervous?” He asked, “I am too.”
Shaking my head, I sink back into my chair. “No. I’m just worried about Ash.”
We were seated in a waiting area that only had an aquarium as a source of entertainment. All around us were couples who lovingly held one another as they waited for their names to be called by the staff to be checked by the obstetrician-gynecologist. Honestly, it made me awkward that we were the only people who weren’t clinging to one another.
Even the magazines didn’t intere
“Holy shit, that’s cold!” The doctor rubs the cool gel on my belly, and it was enough to make me squirm. Markus was sitting next to me, looking so out of place. He pursed his lips, his legs crossed, his head down while he’s looking down on his phone again. The doctor giggles at me, “The gel’s supposed to help us see your baby better.”
Markus was lifting the sonogram above his head, a huge smile on his face.“You should hide that,” I say, jabbing him in his side. He clicks his tongue, stepping away from me, still the sonogram above his head. “My brother’s about to meet us any minute. You wouldn’t want them to see that, would you?”
“And so, imagine my surprise when I found out that he was actually the dean’s son!” Hazel said, waving her arms in the air dramatically. She always does this whenever she’s talking and wants all of us to listen. “No wonder he got the first place in that science competition, even though he didn’t deserve it.”Clementine snorted. And that made me pinch the bridge of my nose. That was usually how it started with the twins. One would talk about how her day or life had been recently, and the other would obviously mess it up or joke about it. The unmistakable reddening of Hazel’s face was a clear indication that she was just about ready to jump up from the table to strangle her twin.“No,” I didn’t hesitate to point at the both of them, ma
My sisters and I cried that night. It was after dinner. We were all getting ready to sleep. I was fixing the plates, but Markus placed his hands on his hips, shaking his head at me. Chuckling, I let him do the dishes because he tells me I already did the cooking. Red quickly ran towards our room carrying Ash, Gray, Blue, and Jade, hiding from us and hiding from the chores. He really ate and dash.Olive and Scarlett, plus the twins, offered to help, but Markus said that his mother would slap him if she found out that he let a guest clean up. He told me he would be talking to them about the current arrangement after everything had been settled. I knew he was doing that because of his parents, who are exactly like him, would find out just how much money we spent the past few days, with the car gas, rentals, and other checkups, they would freak out.
Professor Aschwa was discussing something about corporate taxes when I felt my stomach rumble.Rumble was an understatement. I was seated on my bed, leaning against my headboard. The sound was loud enough that Gray, who was currently pressing his face against Mexi’s aquarium, turned around to look at me, a teasing glint in his eyes. Already bracing myself for the things he would say, I raise my arm up and point at him, narrowing my eyes as much as I could, “Don’t you dare.”Gray dared, “Aww, is the pig hungry?”Rolling my eyes, I place my hand on my belly again, “Can you check the stockpile room if I still have some Todas?”“You’re still eating those?&rd
I had made a terrible, terrible mistake.“Go on, tell Nana what you want,” Maria said, as she was holding Jade’s hand. “Look at those shoes, it’s pretty, isn’t it? Do you want three of them?”Jade smiled, “Five of them, Nana!”“Delightful!” Maria tapped a sale’s lady on the shoulder, “Give me five, different colors.”Slapping my forehead, I watched as Maria walked along the kid’s shoe section with Jade. Meanwhile, Maverick was walking with Gray and Blue beside him, Ash carried and perched on his hips. Markus was walking beside me, pushing a shopping cart. A shopping cart that was already filled with tons of toys, books, clothes, and shoes.
Taking a deep breath, I smile patiently at the laptop.“Thomas,” I say, the smile slowly turning into a frustrated tight-lipped purse of lips, “Didn’t we discuss this a few days ago already? I told you you’re supposed to treat the missing number as the letter x. Remember the formula? Do you, Thomas?”Thomas cleared his throat from the other end of the screen, scratching his cheeks.“Yeah,” Thomas mumbles softly, “But I keep forgetting. It’s different when you teach online instead of having you here. I’m just not used to this kind of teaching, I guess.”Shaking my head, I rubbed my temples. I wanted to tell Thomas that regardless of whether I was teaching him through the laptop or in
Thomas shot me a look from the other end of the screen.“This is unfair,” He whined. “You didn’t tell me he was some sort of math genius. I really tried, Violet. There should be a consolidation prize or something. This isn’t fair!”“Consolation, Thomas.” I hear Helen’s voice from the other end of the screen. Her face pops out next and she waves at us. I smile instantly, it’s been a long time since I’ve last seen her, and even from behind the screen, her eyes still held more warmth than they did when I had seen her last. “Hey, sweetie. That’s one of your brothers?”“This is Blue,” I say, waving my hand to my brother. “He just
