Weeks passed. The kennels that used to be full were one-by-one being vacated. Every day, Luis and his companions would usher the dogs to the mini dog park or the play area where all the visitors looking for a pet to adopt were entertained.
For a while, Polly sat in his kennel watching the dogs around him be fetched. Some of them would return by end of the day but some never managed to come back.
“Oh, Willy is so lucky he got adopted today.” Polly overheard a dog say.
“I am not surprised. He really is a handsome black dog.” another said.
“We’ll have our day. Good luck to us tomorrow.”
“Yeah! Good luck!”
That brief conversation answered the questions that had been in his mind all along and he wondered whether he would have the chance to be considered for adoption just like the others. Every day, he would hear Luis say he was not ready. His skin had impr
Around three o’ clock in the afternoon, the big dogs from the park were being led back to the kennels. There were still quite a number of them left and by the way they were walking by the halls, they all looked tired from playing and stressed from meeting stranger after stranger after stranger. The mood is almost the same where Polly was. Most of the puppies that were left were just too tired they had fallen asleep. All of Lala’s and Jake’s puppies got adopted. Thanks to their ability to really play up each of their puppies stories to the guests. This strategy gave Lala the idea. She could at least try to get to know this little doggie’s story for a shot at beating Jake on the bet.Jake noticed how Lala was craning her neck around the room.“What are you looking for?” Jake asked as he approached Lala.Lala continued to move her head around as she answered - “Nothing!” when she spotte
“For a while, I was winded when Jake grabbed me real hard. I didn’t know where I was! I shook my head and found myself in a real dark place. But I was moving. I sniffed a bit. Hmmm, smells familiar… It’s… it’s Jake! Oh no! I was trapped in Jake’s tummy! He ate me whole?… Kidding!… I was under the jacket he was wearing! But why? I could feel he was walking briskly. Much like the walk people do back in the streets I was before. The people who were moving so fast, they didnlt have time to notice the surroundings.”“And then he wasn’t walking anymore. We were still moving but a lot faster this time. He was riding a motorcyle with me in it. A lot of questions were in my mind all of the answers to them were not good. I can smell Jake’s heart. His was selective love for animals if there was such a thing. ‘Cause caring for animals, even for anything did not have to be selective. It&rs
A bird perched on the branch of a mango tree just beside a nest was looking up to the sky. It was Lupita. It was the mango tree right in the vicinity of the Philippine Pet Rescue Center. She had set up camp right there so she could be close to Polly. But eversince they took him inside, she had never set eyes on her friend. She always wondered what could have happened to him. For a brief moment, Polly had kept her company. He would dance every time she would sing and he always lent an ear whenever she felt like telling tons of stories. She was looking up praying that Polly was just inside having the time of his life - lots of food, lots of attention and, the care he always needed, wanted and deserved.“Oh, Polly, I wish you are okay. I wish you are steps closer to your dreams of finding that person you will love for the rest of your life.”Somewhere in the Philippines, Reggie was looking up to the sky by his window. The stroke he had months b
Polly was awakened by the rumbling in his stomach, a feeling he had not felt in all the time he had at the rescue center. Although, it was not really heaven at PPRC, at least he did not need to worry about his meal or where to sleep. He wondered whether the only person that seemed to care, Luis, was looking for him.Polly did not know what to make of Luis. He thought that if he truly cared for him, he would’ve brought him home or he would’ve made sure Jake did not get the chance to throw him out like that.“Hmmm!” he moaned stretching his front legs to awaken his whole body.He stepped out from behind the post and got startled when someone kicked him to get out of the way. “Awww!” he cried. The little time he had at the center made him forget how busy the streets were on a weekday and blamed himself for not remembering that bit of information. “I could’ve been crushed if I had stepped a
“Little doggie… little doggie!” Jake called out to Polly by the side of the street. He was a little embarrassed doing that but he did not have any choice. His job was on the line.He walked on both sides of the street where he tossed Polly the previous day, calling out to him as he looked around. Jake knew Polly could not go very far at the condition of his leg so he was sure he was just around that area. After sweeping the length of the street, he decided to move on to the main street next to the one he was in.The main street was even busier. Foot traffic was heavy as it was where all sorts of merchandise were being sold on mobile stores. He suddenly felt hungry smelling all sorts of food all around.Jake walked towards a store selling various kinds of fried food from proven(chicken skin), squid balls, fish balls, quekiam, and squid tempura. He bought a stick each of squid balls, fish balls and quekiam. He firs
“That dog can not go very far!” Selling for the day was just beginning. There were still a lot of sticks of fish balls, squid balls, and quekiamto sell. The dog was easy to spot, he knew no one would even bother to take him but then if he just let Polly roam around, the man that was looking for him previously might come back and find him on his own. “That’s easy thousand or two down the drain.” The vendor stuck two pieces of fishballs in a stick and dipped it in sweet sauce. He squatted facing Polly who still had not taken notice of him. The vendor waited until Polly was just an arms-length away. He was waving the stick towards Polly, luring the little dog towards him.Polly saw the vendor alright but how many times had he been mistaken about things like that. Polly looked behind him. The vendor could be waving at somebody else but when he looked forward again, the vendor was still looki
Polly’s left leg moved like a wiper on a windshield as he tried to cut the straw around his neck with his nails. Seeing Jake coming closer and closer was enough reason to move even faster. He did it, finally! He felt the straw break loose. He was free! The vendor was busy cooking he didn’t notice that Polly had gotten loose. Polly walked backwards. He felt his heart beating fast. Many times, he was just an invisible dog to many and how he wished that he could not be seen that moment. Then he heard - “Hey, glad you came!” the fishball vendor greeted Jake without looking. He stirred the mix of fishballs and quekiam that were cooking in boiling oil. He took a strainer and placed the cooked pieces in it. .“You found it?” Jake ending his question with a naughty smile.“Just a moment.” the vendor replied. He took the squid bits that he had soaked in a mixture of starch, water, salt, and
“Stop it, Bruno!” Martin shouted.Bruno stepped closer to Polly still growling, teeth showing, salivating.“I said stop it!”Bruno growled some more.“Stop it I said!”Bruno growled one more time then faced Martin. “I can’t believe you brought in another one, Martin! It’s getting pretty crowded here.”“I don’t see why it’s a problem, Bruno. He takes very little space.”“Now, there’s another one to take care of…again! I’m getting pretty tired doing that.”“You don’t have to take care of him! He will look for his own food just like the others!”“I heard the pack had to step in to save that dog! And I did hear about you taking the blows again! I can’t understand why you had to do that,
