Chapter 2

Author: Mad Gou
A second later, he recovered and snapped at me.

"No. That's not happening. You're my woman, and you always will be."

I frowned, about to say more.

But Damian's new underboss, Vincent Ricci, spoke first.

"Velia, you were seriously injured on that last operation. The doctors said you'll probably never be able to have children.

"Vera's only role is to give the Don an heir. It doesn't change what you and Damian have. You need to be reasonable."

His voice was laced with impatience.

As if I were the one in the wrong.

Standing there with his hands in his pockets, he looked nothing like the man who, just a year ago, had lost an entire shipment of firearms and begged me to save him.

You would never guess that after I recovered the shipment, he had sworn an oath before God.

"God, if I, Vincent, ever betray Ms. Marchetti in this life, let a thousand bullets tear through my chest."

Now he defended Damian and Vera as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

He had known about them all along.

He had simply chosen to keep me in the dark.

I let out a cold laugh, wondering when God planned to send him those thousand bullets.

Vincent caught the look on my face. He froze for a split second, clearly remembering his vow.

An ugly look flashed across his face, and guilt crept into his voice.

"Vera is the Don's lawful wife now. Accept it, and the Don will love you all the same. I'm telling you this for your own good."

Beside him, the new consigliere, Kellen Dore, spoke in the same calm, unhurried tone.

"Exactly, Velia. Let Vera shoulder the duties of the Don's wife while you enjoy your sweet romance with the Don himself. What's so bad about that?"

A faint scar lingered at the corner of his eye.

Six months earlier, when riots broke out on the West Side, Damian's enemies had seized the chance to eliminate Kellen and cut off the Don's right arm.

Surrounded by hundreds of gunmen, it was my judgment and my tactics that carried him out of the encirclement.

A bullet shattered my shoulder.

Four of my ribs were broken.

The ligaments in both my hands were torn so badly that, even now, I still couldn't hold a pen.

Kellen had escaped with nothing more than a tiny scar beside his eye, left by a shard of flying glass.

At my hospital bed, he had sworn a solemn oath.

"Ms. Marchetti, from this day on, the Don's wife stands equal to the Don in my eyes. I pledge my loyalty and my life to her."

Back then, I'd only blushed and told him it was too soon to call me the Don's wife.

I never noticed the flicker of mockery in his eyes.

The Don's wife he had pledged himself to was never meant to be me.

I swallowed the agony of being betrayed by everyone, held onto my dignity and pride, and spoke calmly.

"I don't need your self-righteous idea of what's best for me. I'm not desperate enough to stoop to being Damian's other woman. I'll leave on my own."

Vincent and Kellen looked baffled.

In their eyes, being the Don's other woman was apparently the best fate I could hope for.

They couldn't understand why I wasn't grateful.

The corner of Damian's mouth lifted. His tone was casual, almost as if he were coaxing a stubborn child.

"Velia, stop throwing a tantrum. The moment you leave me, every Family in the city will put a price on your head.

"I know you're only reacting this way because you love me too much to share me with another woman. But you're smart. You'll get used to it."

Vincent jumped at the chance to prove himself right.

"Exactly, Velia. The Don still loves you. You're the one being greedy."

Kellen nodded in agreement.

I curled my lip in disgust.

"Believe whatever you want. I'm done playing your game."

I turned to leave.

Damian reached past me and braced one hand against the car door, blocking my way.

He sighed, "Velia, you're too naive. This stopped being a place you could come and go as you pleased a long time ago."

One look from him, and several of his men hurried over from across the grounds.

They marched me back into the estate and up to a room on the second floor, half by force.

Downstairs, the celebration of Damian and Vera's marriage carried on as though nothing had happened.

The moment the guards left, every trace of grief and fury vanished from my face.

I reached into the hidden compartment inside the wardrobe and took out the phone I'd hidden there.

Without hesitation, I made the call.

The call was answered almost immediately.

"My dear Velia, I knew I'd have the pleasure of hearing your lovely voice again."

His young voice was playful and sweet.

"Elias Soren," I said flatly. "I want to make a deal with you."

Anyone who overheard the call would have been stunned.

The Soren Family was a century-old dynasty every bit as powerful as Damian's.

Elias was the youngest Don in the Family's history.

A low chuckle came through the phone.

"The pleasure is all mine."

"Take me away from Damian," I said. "Protect me from him from this day forward, and I'll hand you half of the East Side arms trade."

The Soren Family had coveted the East Side arms business under my control for years.

But I'd always kept them at arm's length, unwilling to let them grow powerful enough to threaten Damian.

Under my tight control, they had never found an opening.

Elias burst out laughing.

"I don't know what that idiot Damian did to finally make you willing to work with me.

"But it doesn't matter. I'm grateful that he pushed you into my camp.

"My dear Velia, here's to a very profitable partnership."

My men turned Vincent and Kellen away.Soon after, Vincent was gunned down on the street.Kellen surrendered to the police, confessing to gang violence, multiple murders, and a string of other crimes. He was locked away, which was the government's revenge on him in its own right.I assumed Kellen would spend the rest of his life behind bars. But before long, more news reached me.Kellen was dead.He had hidden a razor blade inside his wound and smuggled it into prison.During dinner one evening, he slipped the blade out and tried to kill Damian.Damian spotted the attack in time and killed him instead. The incident cost Damian any chance of parole. The next time I saw him was in court. He looked far older than before. Wisps of gray had appeared in his hair, and all the confidence he'd worn when he first became Don was gone. His eyes locked on my rounded belly. Even the judge sentencing him to life without parole couldn't pull his attention away.Damian's lips trembled as tears of regre

I made sure Damian received a copy of Hector's confession while he was in prison. In the video, Hector admitted that he and Vera had been lovers. He explained in detail how he had forged Vera's ultrasound images and medical records documenting a miscarriage. And the first night Vera slept with Damian, he hadn't been drunk at all. He'd been drugged.Word was that Damian nearly destroyed his cell in a blind rage. It took four correctional officers to hold him down.Elias set breakfast in front of me, openly gloating at Damian's misfortune."Damian has always been proud and arrogant. Finding out a woman played him this whole time probably hurts worse than a bullet."I took a bite of toast. Elias immediately lifted my glass of milk and held it to my lips.I took a sip of the warm milk before answering."This is just the beginning. What comes next will hurt him far more."Vera had never been anything more than Damian's mistress.News spread quickly that the Don had not only betrayed the wom

I handed the federal agents every piece of intelligence I'd gathered. As I rose to leave, the agent who had taken my statement stopped me."Ms. Marchetti, we may need to speak with you again. For now, we'd appreciate it if you stayed in the country and let us know before traveling."I nodded to show I understood.I walked out of the interrogation room just as Damian stepped out of another. The calm confidence he'd worn earlier had vanished.Only a grim heaviness remained. He stepped toward me, his gaze conflicted."Velia, every step I took to become Don bears your mark. Do you want to destroy us both?"I didn't slow down as I passed him."You think far too highly of yourself and underestimate me. If you think you're taking me down with you, you're mistaken."Every trace of my online activity had already been erased.Every physical trace had been erased with Elias's help.To the world, I was nothing more than an innocent bystander.Damian had risen to power with my help, but he had neve

Damian looked into my icy eyes. Then, to my astonishment, he suddenly smiled."Sweetheart, did you do this out of jealousy? I thought you didn't even care."Calmly regaining his composure, he reached out as if to caress my cheek. The female agent beside us reacted instantly, stepping between us."Mr. Corsetti, you are not allowed to have any physical contact with the witness."Damian withdrew his hand with a hint of regret, his eyes never leaving mine."Velia, I told you before. Once Vera was pregnant, you'd still be the woman I love. Why did you have to take it this far?"All right. I'll forgive this little tantrum of yours. Now go to the police station and tell them this was nothing more than a jealous lover acting on impulse."I narrowed my eyes and scoffed."I underestimated how shameless you really are. I hope you're still this relaxed when the verdict is handed down."The smile vanished from Damian's face. His expression became so dark and menacing that the room seemed to grow co

Vera lost the baby. But Elias told me she had never been pregnant in the first place. She and her doctor lover had fabricated the whole thing to deceive Damian. When I heard the truth, I couldn't help finding it bitterly ironic.Damian had deceived me.And Vera had deceived him.Worried that Damian might still be blinded by rage and take it out on me, Elias urged me to leave with him.But I refused. If I wanted to bring Damian down, I had to stay by his side. Only then could I gather evidence of his assassination plots, tax evasion, and other crimes.Left with no choice, Elias drove me back to the estate. Before I got out of the car, he reminded me again and again. No matter what I planned to do, I had to protect myself first.I promised I would. The moment I walked into the estate, the atmosphere was suffocating.Damian sat on the sofa, his deep-set eyes dark and cold as ice."Who drove you home? The celebration didn't end until well past midnight.Early the next morning, the housekeeper knocked on my bedroom door. She looked deeply uneasy, choosing her words with care."Ms. Marchetti, Mrs. Corsetti says she has no appetite. She'll only eat breakfast if you make it yourself."I could hardly believe my ears. I frowned."What did you just say?"The housekeeper knew Damian and I had lived together for years, that we'd been only a marriage license short of husband and wife. But Vera was also the woman Damian had publicly acknowledged as his wife. She couldn't offend either of us.Her face turned deathly pale."It wasn't my idea," she said hurriedly. "Before the Don left this morning, he said Mrs. Corsetti is pregnant. From now on, everyone in the house takes orders from her."Vera was already pregnant. No wonder Vincent and Kellen had changed sides so quickly.I had no intention of making things hard for the housekeeper. Taking a deep breath, I forced down my anger and headed downs
