For seven years of my marriage to Damian Moretti, my daughter and I were so poor that every night we collected empty bottles from the alley behind a bar. Every time Ella traded the bottles in for change, she would ask me, "Mommy, do we have enough saved to go to the aquarium with Daddy yet?" Damian always said we had no money. Then, on the day I finally saved enough for three tickets, I arrived at the aquarium only to find him at the entrance holding his ex-girlfriend's hand, with her son in his arms. A staff member stopped us. "Sorry, Mr. Moretti has reserved the entire aquarium for a private event tonight." A bodyguard in black stepped up beside Damian and bowed his head. "Don, the car is ready." The truth was that my supposedly penniless husband, the man who claimed he could not afford his own daughter's ticket, had reclaimed the Moretti Family long ago and become New York's new Don. It was not that he had no money. He simply refused to spend any of it on us. Later I took my daughter and left New York, and the Vitale Family found me. I inherited the family's ports, took control of the Atlantic Shipping Alliance, and became a Donna before whom countless mafia families bowed. Damian, eyes red, begged me to come home. I only pushed the divorce papers across to him. "Damian, I am already home. And you were never my family."

Chapter 1

How much would it cost to reserve the entire New York Aquarium for one night?

When I found the price, my fingers went stiff.

Seven figures.

Ella and I could pick bottles for a lifetime and never save that much.

"Mommy, Daddy is rich, isn't he?"

Ella was only six. Her puffer jacket had been washed until the color faded, and her snow boots came from a thrift store. But the boy in Damian's arms wore an expensive tailored suit with a small diamond dolphin pinned to his chest.

Confusion filled her small face, as if she were waiting for an answer from me that would make all of this make sense.

I opened my mouth, but no answer came.

Back in school, I had a crush on Damian for four years. He was the most promising heir of the Moretti Family, and the business press said he would take over a vast shipping empire.

Then his girlfriend at the time, Cecilia Rossi, betrayed him. She sold a secret route to a rival family, and his uncle died in the ambush. Damian was stripped of his inheritance, though the news only said his investments had failed and he had declared bankruptcy.

I did not know the Morettis were part of the Mafia. I thought he was simply a rich man who had fallen from grace. When everyone else left, I stood by him through his lowest point and married him.

Before the wedding, he warned me coldly, "I have nothing left. Stay with me, and you'll never have a good life."

But I believed I could finally stand by him when he needed someone most.

Only today did I learn that he had reclaimed the Family three years earlier and become the new Don of New York's underworld.

It was not that he had no money.

He just refused to spend it on his own wife and daughter.

In front of the enormous aquarium tank, Cecilia leaned against his shoulder and laughed as she pointed out a blue whale to her son. Damian lowered his head to listen, a tenderness in his eyes that felt utterly unfamiliar.

The light in Ella's eyes dimmed, bit by bit.

She held back her tears and comforted me. "Maybe Daddy is working. Mommy, let's go home."

I held her tight and turned away. Back in our old apartment, barely six hundred square feet of it, I contacted a divorce lawyer.

At ten o'clock that night, Damian came home.

He wore a threadbare black coat, and the soles of his shoes were still stained with cheap motor oil. If I had not seen that row of armored cars outside the aquarium with my own eyes, I would still have believed he had just come off a shift at a garage.

Ella went to meet him the way she always did, holding up a picture on my phone. "Daddy, can I have this remote control submarine that lights up?"

Damian still did not pick her up. Ella did not make a fuss. Disappointment had become so routine that she had learned long ago not to ask for more.

Damian glanced at it. "Some other time."

Ella clenched the hem of her shirt and, for the first time, pressed him for an answer. "Why does it have to be later?"

He frowned, then finally agreed. "Fine. I'll buy it tomorrow."

Ella threw herself into my arms. "Mommy, Daddy said yes!"

But she waited an entire week, and the submarine never appeared.

On the seventh night Damian came home empty-handed again. Ella hid in the bedroom to cry, and all he did was hand me a brown paper bag.

"Brew what's in the bag. I'm taking it with me tomorrow."

The bag bore the emblem of a private clinic. Inside were medicines meant to help a woman recover her health.

By the time I realized what I was doing, the bag had already struck him hard in the chest.
