Chapter 3

Author: Holly
A flicker of panic crossed William’s face, and he immediately lowered the gun.

There was still a trace of concern in his eyes as he looked at me. “Honey, what are you doing here?”

I looked at him and forced the faintest smile, bitterness spreading through my chest.

“Shouldn’t you be explaining yourself first? Why is my fiancé standing here getting engaged to another woman?”

William didn’t answer. Instead, he instinctively glanced back at Laura.

Laura walked over and slipped her arm naturally through his, tilting her head as she studied me with open curiosity.

“Who are you?”

Before I could answer, Laura’s father approached.

His gaze swept over me once before settling on William. He seemed to have already sensed that something was wrong, and there was a clear warning in his voice.

“My daughter isn’t someone you can treat casually. You’d better explain this to me.”

William immediately smiled and stepped away from me.

“Please don’t worry. This lady is only a friend of mine. I’ll take care of it.”

A friend. Something in my chest trembled at those words.

After seven years together, after all the times I had helped him from behind the scenes, all I amounted to in the end was a friend.

I thought I would cry, but strangely, not a single tear fell.

William turned to Laura. “Go stay with your father for a while. I’ll handle this.”

Laura nodded. Before leaving, she even gave me an apologetic smile.

“Don’t take it personally. William is usually so busy that he hardly has time for anything else. When we get married, we’ll definitely invite you.”

Once she was gone, William grabbed my wrist and dragged me behind one of the nearby pillars, as though I were something that had to be kept out of sight.

When he saw how red my eyes were, he lowered his voice and patiently explained.

“Lilith, I was going to wait a little longer before telling you, but I desperately need access to Laura’s family port right now. I don’t have another choice.”

“I have too many enemies right now. If Laura is the one everyone sees beside me, you’ll be safer.”

He paused, and his tone softened.

“Be good and don’t make a scene here. Once this is over, I’ll cut ties with her completely, and then you and I will have our ceremony.”

I stared at him, my throat tightening.

Once again, it was supposedly for my protection.

For seven years, he had used those words to keep me away from every public occasion and deny me any recognized place beside him.

Now he was using the same excuse to justify getting engaged to another woman.

“Then what am I?”

William frowned. “You’re the most important person in my life. Isn’t that enough?”

He released my wrist and straightened his cuff.

There had been a time when William couldn’t bear to see me suffer even the slightest hurt.

When one of his enemies threatened me, he moved all of his men to protect me and stayed awake for three days and three nights.

Once, when I had nothing more than a low fever, he ended a family meeting immediately and rushed home to take care of me.

But now, every grievance I had was nothing more than unreasonable behavior in his eyes.

At that moment, several of William’s men passed nearby. They glanced at us and began murmuring among themselves.

“Who is she?”

“I think she’s someone William used to see. She never had any official place in the family.”

“The Don is about to marry Miss Laura. If she really cares about him, she should know when to step aside.”

“Exactly. She should know her place. The family never acknowledged her, so at the end of the day, she’s still an outsider.”

They kept their voices low, but not low enough to stop me from hearing every word.

William didn’t tell them to stop. He only looked at me with a detached expression.

“Go home first. I still need to explain things to Laura. I’ll come back and stay with you later.”

I forced down the discomfort twisting inside me and answered quietly.

“Okay.”

Then I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I heard William speaking to Laura’s father.

“It was just a misunderstanding. I’ve already taken care of it.”

The sea breeze hit me the moment I stepped out of the warehouse.

Throughout the years William and I had been together, whenever we argued, I would always go back to my mother’s place.

I hailed a cab and gave the driver her address.

Half a month later, John told me he wanted to take me somewhere.“Where are we going?”“Sicily. There’s an important occasion.”I didn’t ask any further questions and followed him onto the plane. After we arrived, John took me near the old Rina family estate.Several cars were parked outside, and voices from inside drifted out through the building, mixed with the sound of arguments and hurried conversations.I looked at him, confused.“Why did you bring me here?”John looked toward the estate and explained.“Today is the succession meeting for the position of Don. William will be removed from power today.”I froze for a moment.“William?”John continued watching the estate as he spoke.“His condition has been unstable recently. His decisions have caused dissatisfaction among his men and the senior members of the family. They held several meetings, and today they’ll officially vote.”Sitting in the passenger seat, I stared at the gates of the Rina estate. The sound of arguing carried fr

When I got back into the car, Sophia immediately asked whether something had happened and why I had taken so long.I brushed the question aside with a casual excuse and didn’t go into any detail.“Honestly, their security was terrible. The mission was much easier than I expected.”I gave the documents in my hand a light shake and smiled at her. That part of my past was not something I wanted to talk about. If anything, the years I had spent in that relationship now felt almost humiliating to remember.Sophia didn’t press me any further and simply grinned as she held up her hand for a high five.“Good. The mission’s done, so we can finally get out of here.”I nodded. I had thought William would finally give up after that.Instead, only a few days later, he came directly to the Network’s headquarters.I didn’t even know he was standing outside the compound, held back by security, until Sophia came to tell me.I went downstairs and stopped some distance away, watching him from across the

William spun around and caught sight of me just as I was walking away.He rushed after me and seized my wrist, and when our eyes met, his voice trembled slightly. “Lilith...”I tried to pull free, but his grip held firm. There was a faint madness in William’s eyes. I hadn’t seen him in a long time, and he seemed to have changed completely. The sharp brightness that once filled his eyes was gone, and dark stubble covered his jaw as though he hadn’t bothered to take care of himself in days. The longer he looked at me, the more agitated he became.“Lilith, is it really you? I’ve been looking for you for so long. I tried everything I could think of, but I couldn’t find you anywhere.”He tightened his grip on my hand and continued eagerly, “Did you finally decide to forgive me? Is that why you came back to me on your own?”“You don’t have to worry about Laura anymore. There’s nothing between us now, and I’ve taken care of everything that needed to be settled. From now on, you’ll be the only

After the meeting, I was about to leave with Sophia to get something to eat when the man called out to me.He walked over and held out his hand. “Lilith, right?”Sophia greeted him, then shot me a meaningful look. “Boss, you two talk. I’ll head out first.”The Boss?I looked at the man in front of me and finally realized that he was John, the intimidating head of the Network everyone at headquarters seemed to fear.He gave me a slightly awkward smile as we shook hands, and his palm was surprisingly warm, nothing like the cold, unapproachable man the others had described. The smile itself, however, looked a little strange, almost as if he had deliberately forced himself to make it.“I’ve seen your work. It’s good. You haven’t disappointed me.”I nodded and gave a modest reply, but didn’t say much more. From that day on, I seemed to run into John everywhere around headquarters. It was strange because our offices weren’t even on the same floor, yet somehow our paths kept crossing. One day

By the time the plane landed, dawn was just beginning to break.I wheeled my suitcase through the jet bridge, and a blast of cold air greeted me as I stepped into the terminal.Near the exit stood a woman in a black trench coat, her eyes moving through the crowd as though she were searching for someone. When her gaze settled on me, she walked over and said, “Follow me.”I got into the car with her, and she focused on driving, barely speaking along the way.As I watched the unfamiliar streets pass outside the window, I found myself feeling strangely calmer. The Network’s headquarters was housed in an old building on the outskirts of the city. From the outside, it looked like an abandoned factory, but once I stepped inside, I realized there was far more to it than appearances suggested. The woman in the trench coat registered my fingerprints, then took me upstairs to the residential quarters on the third floor.“This will be your room from now on. Get some rest for now, and report to the

The phone rang for a long time, but I never answered.William sent me another message.“Baby, where are you? Stop this. I’m home now, and I’m waiting for you.”The message showed as read, but there was still no reply. He sent several more.“Baby, don’t scare me like this, okay?”“We’ve been together for so many years. Are you really going to leave me over something this small?”“I think we need to sit down somewhere and talk this through. I’ll explain everything to you properly.”“Please answer me, okay?”When I continued to ignore him, William gradually began to lose patience. He stood alone in the living room, suddenly unsure what to do.Part of him still believed I was only angry, that I had gone somewhere to cool off or was hiding away because I wanted him to come looking for me.But the neatly made bed and the empty wardrobe told him otherwise. The necklace he had given me only a few days earlier was lying untouched on the table.William frowned and called one of his men.“You hav
