Chapter 3

Autor: Shallow Teal
I stumbled out of the hospital clutching the test results. Scott called almost immediately.

"Where are you?

"Elena wants to swim. Go and clean the pool."

I gripped the phone until my fingers went white. "I'll go..."

Silence held for two seconds before he asked, "What's wrong with your voice?"

Only then did I realize I was so hoarse I could barely be heard.

"Nothing." I hung up, forced myself upright despite the bleeding, picked up a bucket, and went to scrub the pool tiles.

After five solid hours of scrubbing, I finally stood, and my vision suddenly went black.

I crumpled onto the tiles and lost consciousness.

When I came to, I thought I'd been thrown into a deep freeze.

The suffocation jolted me awake. Someone had already seized my hair and hauled my head above the water.

"Cough... cough... cough!"

I coughed violently, and the water I brought up was streaked with blood.

"You bitch! How dare you put broken glass in the pool and cut me!" Elena gripped my chin and thrust her face inches from mine.

Only then did I notice the shallow cut on her pinky.

She held up her hand and whined to Scott, "Darling, what if you had gotten into the pool too...?"

Her pathetic performance made me sneer. "You'd better hurry to the ER. Wait any longer, and the cut will heal before you get there."

Elena flushed crimson and immediately ordered the guards, "Madam enjoys ice water. Give her all she wants!"

I had always been terrified of the cold.

During our first year of marriage, my hands and feet always turned icy in bed.

Scott would rub his palms together until they were warm, then wrap them around my feet. All the while, he grumbled about how cold New York was that year and said he wanted to take me to Australia for the winter.

"Your hands are freezing. What will you do without me to warm them?" he muttered with a frown. "Maybe we should move to Australia and soak up the sun every day until you're a warm, cozy little kitten."

"And your organization?"

"Forget it. You matter more." He reached over and smoothed the deep crease between my brows.

But now, on the very night after my D&C, cold stabbed through me like hundreds of needles. Pain gave way to numbness until only silent tears remained. And Scott was nowhere.

I no longer had the will to struggle.

I could never be a mother again. It no longer mattered what anyone did to my body.

"Enough!" Scott burst in. He shoved the guards aside and wrapped me tightly in his coat.

"Who told you to do this?!" he roared at the guards, his voice hoarse. "Get out! All of you, get out!"

Elena froze.

She lunged for Scott's arm. "Darling, what are you doing? She..."

Scott flung her off.

Elena staggered back two steps, slipped, and plunged screaming into the pool.

She thrashed and screamed, "Scott! Help me! My leg is cramping..."

Scott looked down at me.

I was soaked through and could no longer speak.

He kissed my forehead and gently lowered me onto a lounge chair beside the pool. "Wait for me..."

He dove in and hauled Elena out.

Elena clung to his neck, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, and insisted on returning to the bedroom to change.

I watched them disappear down the corridor.

And I understood that the hands that had warmed me through countless nights were never going to be mine again.

I opened my email, stared at the draft message to my attorney with the divorce papers attached, and tapped Send.

Leah's POVI stared at the screen, my mind blank. Then I reached out and pressed the red power button on the remote.Fifty million. He was willing to spend fifty million dollars to find me, yet he had refused to give me one million to save my grandmother.I closed my eyes. The gaping wound in my chest no longer hurt.I felt nothing at all.The hospital sent a psychiatrist to evaluate me. I had lost everything, and living or dying made no difference to me.Even so, my body slowly recovered. The cast came off my right hand, and my ribs hurt less each day.I could even get out of bed and walk slowly.Every day, the nurse wheeled me into the garden to sit in the warm sunlight.A month later, I boarded a bus bound for a small town in the north. Before she died, my grandmother had told me she owned a small, aging house in that town. She had planned to retire there, but after she fell ill, she never retu

Scott's POVThe surveillance footage captured only one brief sequence: Leah, blindfolded, being dragged into a van by two men.She did not struggle. Her figure in the footage was thin as paper and barely upright.I watched it dozens of times."The van headed toward the East Bank docks." My second pointed to a red circle on the map. "A private cruise ship sailed from there that night and exploded the next morning."My nails dug into my palm. She had been bound when she called me. Her voice was hoarse, and she probably knew she would not survive. And what was I doing?I had my arm around another woman at a banquet."Can you confirm she was aboard?""Yes."I stood up and kicked the chair over. "Find Mac."That night, I led a raid on the warehouse sheltering the remnants of Mac's gang.Gunfire raged for an hour.Shrapnel tore open my left arm, but I felt no pain.I dragged a half-dead lieutenant to his feet and pressed the muzzle under his chin. Scott's POVThe black Bentley tore through the empty streets, the accelerator almost to the floor as I raced toward the Cullen family's hospital.I yanked the doctor on duty out of the staff lounge.I fixed him with a hard stare. "What room is Leah's grandmother in?!"The terrified doctor trembled as he searched the records. After a long moment, he ventured, "Mr. Cullen... that lady passed away several days ago.""What did you say?""We did everything we could," the doctor explained softly, as if afraid I might draw my gun at any second. "Mrs. Cullen never paid for the surgery. In the end, all we could offer was conservative care..."I stood rooted to the spot, every ounce of strength draining from my body. She had not paid for the surgery?Had she really come to beg me that night for her grandmother's surgery? And what was I doing? When I came out of the shower and saw Elena ending the call, I asked about it offhandedly.Elena smiled. Scott's POVI regretted hanging up the instant I did it.But I could not take back what I had said.I could not believe anyone would dare kidnap Leah. She was my wife.Even so, I stood on the terrace for several minutes, clutching my phone while the wind whipped around me, unable to shake my unease.Stacks of documents and audio recordings still covered the table.Elena had brought them. The evidence claimed that Leah had secretly contacted lawyers during our second year of marriage to ask how she could divide the Cullen family's overseas assets.I rubbed my brow and took a long swallow of whiskey. The truth was, I had already decided to give in.I had planned to find her and tell her that no matter how many times she had deceived me, no matter whether she had married me for the contract, I accepted it all.I did not care about the hundred million dollars. I only wanted us to be whole again and to have a healthy baby someday. The afternoon the final divorce decree arrived, I had just r

Just then, my phone rang. It was the hospital."Mrs. Cullen, your grandmother's heart rate has plummeted. She's in critical condition and needs emergency surgery immediately. We estimate it will cost one million dollars. Please come as soon as..."I did not take in another word of it.Still soaking wet, I ran from the pool without changing and hailed a cab straight to the hospital. My grandmother lay in an ICU bed, her frail body bristling with tubes, as thin as a dead leaf.At the sight of me, one large tear rolled from her sunken, wrinkled eye."Leah... sweetheart..." She stroked my hair with one cracked hand. "I don't want any more treatment. I mean it. Come home with me."I clutched her warm, wasted fingers and shook my head hard. "No! I'll find a way. Grandma, believe me. I will save you!"With great effort, she cupped my icy hands and breathed warm air over them. That faint warmth of her breath made my eyes sting with tears. The doctor drew me aside and gravely warned that they c
