Chapter 2

Penulis: Reneemoon
Leo was our first child, Niccolo's and mine. Our only one.

He'd been sick since the day he was born.

When the doctor said the words "narrowed airway," Niccolo went white as a sheet.

That same day, he put all family business on hold, shut himself in the kitchen with nutrition books, and cooked every one of Leo's meals himself.

Leo lived to see his third birthday. Every day, he grabbed his crayons and scribbled white daisies.

There were crayon daisies everywhere: on the walls, on the table, even on the hem of my dress.

I thought I'd get to watch him grow up.

Until the day an enemy hurled a Molotov cocktail into our house.

Niccolo threw himself over Leo and me and yelled, "Get out, both of you!"

He grabbed the gun from his man and ran back into the fire.

Leo was screaming. I held him tight and ran for my life. I didn't know how long I ran.

Then I looked down, and he wasn't crying anymore.

His face and body had turned a bluish purple. His lips were dark, and his little hands hung limp.

I froze. The doctor's words echoed in my head like a curse.

Narrowed airway.

Leo didn't survive the fire.

After he died, part of me stayed trapped in that fire. I didn't want to get pregnant again.

It felt like a betrayal of Leo.

Niccolo never pushed me. He said he'd wait until I was ready.

Only now did I realize he'd stopped wanting to wait long ago.

The sound of the door opening pulled me back to the present.

Niccolo came in with a bowl of soup and said carefully, "Elena, the maid told me you haven't eaten all day."

He held a spoonful up to my lips.

"Come on, have a little soup. I promise you'll never have to deal with any of this again.

"I'll send Aria away."

I pushed the spoon away.

"Just send her away?"

His hand stopped in midair.

"Elena, I know you want me to get rid of the baby.

"But Aria's innocent. So is the baby. That's my own flesh and blood. I can't be that cruel."

My nails dug into my palms.

Innocent.

There was no way Aria was innocent.

She was the orphan I'd found on the side of the road. I'd raised her for 18 years.

Nobody knew better than she did what Niccolo and Leo meant to me.

And she still crawled into his bed.

I looked Niccolo straight in the eye.

"Tell me. Three years ago today, what did you promise me?"

He flinched and looked away.

"That's all in the past, Elena. We both have to learn to move on."

Move on.

I almost laughed out loud.

"You expect me to just move on from Leo's death?"

Niccolo's impatience finally showed. He set the bowl down hard.

"Elena, you're not the only one who's been suffering these past three years!

"I lost my son too. And my mother and the elders have been breathing down my neck about an heir day and night.

"Why can't you try to see it from my side for once?"

I looked at him.

I'd watched my child die in my arms.

Then his own father went behind my back and got another woman pregnant.

And now he was telling me I should see it from his side.

We stared each other down for a few seconds. Then Niccolo sighed.

"Don't worry. My family just needs an heir.

"Once the baby's born, I'll have Aria hand him over to you to raise.

"Nothing will change. Everything will be just like before."

With those words, he made the decision for both of us.

But I couldn't pretend everything was normal after what he'd done.

I looked up at him.

"Then let me go."

Niccolo didn't seem surprised.

He looked at me wearily, as if he'd seen it coming.

"Elena, don't threaten me with that. We both know you're not going anywhere.

"Since Leo died, you've barely been able to take care of yourself. How would you survive without me?

"Enough. Stop making a scene. The family meeting is still on for tomorrow, and you're coming."

With that, he walked straight out of the room.

A single tear dropped onto the white sheets.

Niccolo once promised that I'd never have to worry about a thing as long as I was with him. He'd take care of everything for the rest of my life.

I believed him.

Now he was using that very promise as an excuse to treat me like I was helpless.

I took out my phone and dialed a number.

"In three days, erase every record of me. I don't want anyone to find me."

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

"Okay. Three days."

Niccolo stepped forward, but his legs gave out. His knee struck a ridge of dirt beside the path, and he caught himself before he fell completely. He looked up at me. Blood seeped between his fingers and ran down the folds of his shirt, pooling at his waist."I really...""That wound ends everything between us," I cut in. "We're done."I glanced down at the blood spreading across his side."You don't owe me anything anymore."I turned away. And this time, I meant it.I walked steadily, my skirt brushing through the flowers. The daisies swayed. Two petals landed on my shoe. I didn't look down."Elena!"His voice cracked. He struggled to his feet and stumbled after me, but someone grabbed him and held him back.It was Giovanna. She looked at me.For a long time.Something flickered in her aging eyes—calculation, hesitation, and the faintest trace of sympathy."If she's set on leaving, let her go."We won't force anyone to stay. Stop making a fool of yourself, Niccolo."At that, Niccolo st

I sighed."I'm not the one responsible for any of this."It's him. The man standing right in front of you. You've been blaming the wrong person all along."Aria faltered. The knife was still lodged in Niccolo's side, but she made no move to push it deeper."He did the same thing to you that he did to me. He gave you hope, then took it away."Aria flinched. My words struck a nerve.I looked at Niccolo. The wind swept in from deep in the field, and the smell of blood drowned out the daisies."You did this. All of it."You make promises to one woman after another, and then you just walk away like it's nothing."I met his eyes.I'd known those eyes for years. I'd seen every side of him.Tenderness. Calculation. Coldness. Every now and then, real feeling. Now they were bloodshot, the whites streaked red."You drove her mad."Two of his men came over, grabbed Aria by the arms, and started hauling her away. She let out a sharp, catlike scream. Her disheveled hair clung to her tear-streaked fa

In his mind, Niccolo opened the front door again. The house was dark. My slippers were still by the door, white with tiny daisies embroidered along the edges.Every time he kicked them, I'd tell him, "Watch it." But he never bothered to be careful.I'd always closed the bag of coffee beans on the kitchen counter after using it. Now it sat open.It took forever for the hot water to come through, so I always boiled a kettle in advance. And then there were the daisies.I kept them in a vase in the living room. Whenever I changed the water, I'd pick off the dead petals, then shake the drops off my fingers.Standing in the field, he caught the familiar scent of daisies drifting on the breeze. It was the same scent that used to fill the living room. The familiar scent brought back memories of the home he'd lost and the life they'd once shared.Maybe that's how people are.You take something for granted while you have it. Once it's gone, the emptiness gets into your bones and keeps you up at

Niccolo snatched the paper. There was a town name on it.It read "Daisyfield."Then he remembered. That was where we went every year on Leo's birthday. The door shut.He came after me.In the town where the daisies grew, the fields stretched as far as the eye could see. The wind rolled across them in long white waves.I crouched among the flowers, gently pushed the stems aside, and set the little cloth bag on the soil."Leo, Mommy never understood why you loved daisies so much."The breeze set the petals trembling."I think I understand now. They're so pure and beautiful. Looking at them makes me wish life could stay this way forever."I looked down at the bag of ashes."And they smell like you."I paused, my fingers still pinching the mouth of the bag."Mommy's going to lay you to rest here and visit you all the time. Is that okay?"I've been living in the past. I've held on to you so tightly that I haven't been able to move on."I slowly tipped the bag over. The white ashes fell onto

Niccolo went pale. He tried to speak."No... it was just an accident. I was drunk that night...""So being drunk makes it okay? I'm supposed to understand and stand by while you protect another woman and wait for her to give birth to your child?"I laughed until tears welled up in my eyes."Niccolo, I should have seen it a long time ago. The only person you've ever really loved is yourself."When I said that, the room went quiet. He gripped the doorframe, his knuckles white. Then he said something so cruel, he probably didn't even realize how much it hurt."Elena, I know you're really hurting right now..."But losing this baby isn't the end of the world. We can go home and try for another."I looked at him."And what makes you think," I said softly, "that I'd ever go back with you?"I threw off the sheet and put my feet on the floor."Our baby is dead. And you already gave up on me."I stood up, the hem of the hospital gown swaying."There's nothing left between us."With that, I walke

I stared at the doctor, stunned.A miscarriage... a week ago?It was absurd.I hadn't known a thing.I closed my eyes."How far along... was I?"The doctor looked at me with pity, and a little caution."About three months. You were still in your first trimester."Three months.I did the math.I had already been pregnant when I found out Aria was carrying his child.I hadn't known it, and neither had Niccolo.I stared at the ceiling, my fingers slowly tightening on the sheet. What if I'd known sooner? What if I'd noticed my period was late that day, bought a test, and seen two pink lines?Would I have stayed?Would I have stood in front of him holding that test and said, "I'm pregnant"?Would he have chosen me?Would that have stopped everything that came after? The questions kept coming. I knew how ridiculous they were. Not because the answer was no. Because I was still stuck on "what if."I shut my eyes for a moment.Even if I'd known sooner, even if I'd shown him the positive pregnan
