Chapter 3

Author: Reneemoon
The next day was the family meeting.

Early that morning, Niccolo's men brought me to the meeting room and sat me down at the head of the table.

Both sides of the long table were full. Everyone looked at me, some with pity, others with contempt.

I gripped the arms of my chair and said nothing.

The door opened.

Giovanna walked in, leading Aria by the hand.

Aria was wearing a black dress, with the Valeri snake brooch pinned over her heart.

That brooch was the Donna's emblem.

Giovanna looked around the room, then pointed at me.

"Aria, today is your day. Sit beside Niccolo and announce the news with him."

Every eye in the room snapped to my face.

I didn't move.

Aria stood there looking lost, twisting the hem of her dress. She turned to Giovanna.

"Donna... maybe we should just forget it.

"Elena took me in and raised me like a sister. If she's not happy about this, I can leave."

She turned as if to go.

Niccolo shot to his feet. With everyone watching, he walked over and caught her by the wrist.

"You're the mother of this baby. This meeting is about you.

"As long as I'm here, nobody's going to embarrass you. Come sit down."

He led her over and looked down at me.

"Elena, let Aria have your seat today. Just this once."

For two days, he'd expected me to give in to his every demand. I'd had enough.

I curled my fingers into fists.

"The fact that I'm even here today is already a huge compromise.

"Don't expect anything more from me."

Niccolo's face hardened.

"We already agreed on this yesterday. And you're still going to make a scene?"

I held his gaze.

"You agreed. I didn't.

"I never said I'd accept her baby.

"Leo will always be my only child. His father may have forgotten him, but his mother never will."

Niccolo froze.

Giovanna slammed her palm on the table.

"Elena, how long are you going to keep acting like a spoiled child?

"You failed to protect that boy three years ago, and you nearly left this family without an heir!

"If Niccolo hadn't kept stopping me, you'd have been thrown out long ago. Why can't you ever be grateful for what you have?"

I turned to Giovanna and gave her a thin smile.

"If being grateful means accepting my husband having a baby with another woman, then I guess I'll never be grateful enough."

Now Niccolo's face darkened.

"Elena, you've lost your mind."

He lifted a hand, and two of his men stepped up on either side of me.

"Take the Donna back to her room. She can come out when she's thought this through."

I shook off their hands and stared at him.

"You're locking me up?"

"I'm not locking you up. But you're the Donna, and this behavior is beneath you.

"And since you clearly don't want to be the Donna, fine. Aria can take over your duties for the next few days.

"I'm not asking your permission this time."

Aria bit her lip and looked back and forth between us, her voice thick with tears.

"Don, you can't fight with Elena like this because of me...

"Just send me away. I'll have the baby quietly and then I'll be gone, okay?"

Niccolo tensed and pulled her into his arms.

"You're pregnant. Where exactly do you think you're going?

"Don't be scared. I'm here. You're not leaving my sight, not even for a second."

I watched them cling to each other and remembered what Niccolo had promised me yesterday.

He'd said that as soon as the baby was born, he'd send her away.

But the stubborn look in his eyes and the way he held her told me everything I needed to know.

And it made one thing perfectly clear.

He'd lied to me again.

Whatever tiny bit of hope I'd still been holding on to shattered.

Niccolo stepped forward, but his legs gave out. His knee struck a ridge of dirt beside the path, and he caught himself before he fell completely. He looked up at me. Blood seeped between his fingers and ran down the folds of his shirt, pooling at his waist."I really...""That wound ends everything between us," I cut in. "We're done."I glanced down at the blood spreading across his side."You don't owe me anything anymore."I turned away. And this time, I meant it.I walked steadily, my skirt brushing through the flowers. The daisies swayed. Two petals landed on my shoe. I didn't look down."Elena!"His voice cracked. He struggled to his feet and stumbled after me, but someone grabbed him and held him back.It was Giovanna. She looked at me.For a long time.Something flickered in her aging eyes—calculation, hesitation, and the faintest trace of sympathy."If she's set on leaving, let her go."We won't force anyone to stay. Stop making a fool of yourself, Niccolo."At that, Niccolo st

I sighed."I'm not the one responsible for any of this."It's him. The man standing right in front of you. You've been blaming the wrong person all along."Aria faltered. The knife was still lodged in Niccolo's side, but she made no move to push it deeper."He did the same thing to you that he did to me. He gave you hope, then took it away."Aria flinched. My words struck a nerve.I looked at Niccolo. The wind swept in from deep in the field, and the smell of blood drowned out the daisies."You did this. All of it."You make promises to one woman after another, and then you just walk away like it's nothing."I met his eyes.I'd known those eyes for years. I'd seen every side of him.Tenderness. Calculation. Coldness. Every now and then, real feeling. Now they were bloodshot, the whites streaked red."You drove her mad."Two of his men came over, grabbed Aria by the arms, and started hauling her away. She let out a sharp, catlike scream. Her disheveled hair clung to her tear-streaked fa

In his mind, Niccolo opened the front door again. The house was dark. My slippers were still by the door, white with tiny daisies embroidered along the edges.Every time he kicked them, I'd tell him, "Watch it." But he never bothered to be careful.I'd always closed the bag of coffee beans on the kitchen counter after using it. Now it sat open.It took forever for the hot water to come through, so I always boiled a kettle in advance. And then there were the daisies.I kept them in a vase in the living room. Whenever I changed the water, I'd pick off the dead petals, then shake the drops off my fingers.Standing in the field, he caught the familiar scent of daisies drifting on the breeze. It was the same scent that used to fill the living room. The familiar scent brought back memories of the home he'd lost and the life they'd once shared.Maybe that's how people are.You take something for granted while you have it. Once it's gone, the emptiness gets into your bones and keeps you up at

Niccolo snatched the paper. There was a town name on it.It read "Daisyfield."Then he remembered. That was where we went every year on Leo's birthday. The door shut.He came after me.In the town where the daisies grew, the fields stretched as far as the eye could see. The wind rolled across them in long white waves.I crouched among the flowers, gently pushed the stems aside, and set the little cloth bag on the soil."Leo, Mommy never understood why you loved daisies so much."The breeze set the petals trembling."I think I understand now. They're so pure and beautiful. Looking at them makes me wish life could stay this way forever."I looked down at the bag of ashes."And they smell like you."I paused, my fingers still pinching the mouth of the bag."Mommy's going to lay you to rest here and visit you all the time. Is that okay?"I've been living in the past. I've held on to you so tightly that I haven't been able to move on."I slowly tipped the bag over. The white ashes fell onto

Niccolo went pale. He tried to speak."No... it was just an accident. I was drunk that night...""So being drunk makes it okay? I'm supposed to understand and stand by while you protect another woman and wait for her to give birth to your child?"I laughed until tears welled up in my eyes."Niccolo, I should have seen it a long time ago. The only person you've ever really loved is yourself."When I said that, the room went quiet. He gripped the doorframe, his knuckles white. Then he said something so cruel, he probably didn't even realize how much it hurt."Elena, I know you're really hurting right now..."But losing this baby isn't the end of the world. We can go home and try for another."I looked at him."And what makes you think," I said softly, "that I'd ever go back with you?"I threw off the sheet and put my feet on the floor."Our baby is dead. And you already gave up on me."I stood up, the hem of the hospital gown swaying."There's nothing left between us."With that, I walke

I stared at the doctor, stunned.A miscarriage... a week ago?It was absurd.I hadn't known a thing.I closed my eyes."How far along... was I?"The doctor looked at me with pity, and a little caution."About three months. You were still in your first trimester."Three months.I did the math.I had already been pregnant when I found out Aria was carrying his child.I hadn't known it, and neither had Niccolo.I stared at the ceiling, my fingers slowly tightening on the sheet. What if I'd known sooner? What if I'd noticed my period was late that day, bought a test, and seen two pink lines?Would I have stayed?Would I have stood in front of him holding that test and said, "I'm pregnant"?Would he have chosen me?Would that have stopped everything that came after? The questions kept coming. I knew how ridiculous they were. Not because the answer was no. Because I was still stuck on "what if."I shut my eyes for a moment.Even if I'd known sooner, even if I'd shown him the positive pregnan
