Chapter 4

Penulis: Reneemoon
They sent me back to the house.

As I walked in, one of his men said to me, "Mrs. Valeri, the Don wants you to hand over the family ledgers. From now on, the Donna will keep them."

Mrs. Valeri.

I'd barely walked out of that meeting, and already they'd stopped calling me Donna.

I shoved the ledgers into his hands.

"Tell Niccolo to leave me out of family business from now on. His new wife can handle it."

Once he was gone, I started clearing out my things.

I scraped Leo's drawings off the walls, one by one.

Last of all, I poured Leo's ashes into a small cloth bag and tucked it inside my coat.

It wasn't until I zipped it shut that I realized six years of my life had fit into one suitcase.

I wheeled it out the front door.

The night wind slipped through my collar. The wheels rattled over the gravel. Clack, clack.

As if they were counting down the last seconds of those six years.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Before I could turn around, something slammed into the back of my head.

And then everything went black.

...

When I came to, there was a gag in my mouth, and I was tied up in an abandoned warehouse.

My hands were tied behind the chair, the rough rope digging into my wrists.

I blinked a few times and caught sight of Aria tied to the chair next to me.

She was gagged too. Half her hair had come loose and was plastered to her sweaty face.

That was when I realized we'd been kidnapped, just as I was about to leave.

Crash!

Someone kicked the steel door open, and Niccolo burst through.

He was breathing hard, his eyes fixed on me.

"Elena!"

I looked up at him, and my clenched fingers loosened a little.

Then something scraped across the concrete floor, and a few men emerged from the back of the warehouse.

The man in front was tall and skinny, twirling a lighter between his fingers.

"Easy, Don Valeri. What's the rush?"

Niccolo spoke through gritted teeth. "Luca. So you're not dead after all. I came alone like you said, so you'd better stick to the deal!"

Luca Santoro laughed, showing a row of yellow teeth.

"Of course it's me. You didn't manage to kill me three years ago. Bet you never saw this day coming, huh?"

He pulled two switchblades from the back of his waistband and flicked them open. He held one against my throat and the other against Aria's.

"Look at these two. One's your wife, and the other one's carrying your kid.

"Wouldn't it be fun to watch them both die right in front of you?"

Niccolo's breathing turned ragged.

"Let them go!"

Luca pressed the knife harder against my throat. Blood trickled down my neck.

"Luca, you're insane!"

Niccolo lunged forward a step.

Luca waved a hand, and one of his men hauled Aria up out of her chair.

"Let's start with the side piece. Do it."

The man's big hand clamped around Aria's throat. She kicked and thrashed.

"Niccolo... our baby!"

Niccolo flinched.

"Wait!"

The man ignored him. The veins stood out on the back of his hand, and Aria's face turned purple.

"Take Elena instead..."

Niccolo clenched his jaw and slowly pointed at me.

My heart skipped a beat.

"Luca, let her go. Take Elena instead. I'll pay whatever price you demand.

"If you refuse, the whole Valeri family will make sure you don't live through the night."

Luca glanced at me and gave a harsh laugh. He lowered the knife from my throat and signaled to his men.

Aria crumpled to the floor, then scrambled toward Niccolo on her hands and knees.

Niccolo bent down and scooped her up. Then he turned to me, his voice low and strained.

"Elena, she's carrying my child. You have to understand.

"I'll be right back for you."

He left me with that and never looked back.

I watched him disappear through the rusted steel doorway.

I stared at the closed door. Even with my life hanging in the balance, I couldn't help letting out a bitter laugh.

I laughed as tears began falling to the floor.

I laughed at myself. Just a moment ago, I'd still had a little hope.

Two men grabbed me under the arms and dragged me deeper into the warehouse.

One of my shoes came off. The gravel tore up the bottom of my foot.

A steel door swung shut behind us with a dull thud.

It was dark in there.

I closed my eyes.

Niccolo stepped forward, but his legs gave out. His knee struck a ridge of dirt beside the path, and he caught himself before he fell completely. He looked up at me. Blood seeped between his fingers and ran down the folds of his shirt, pooling at his waist."I really...""That wound ends everything between us," I cut in. "We're done."I glanced down at the blood spreading across his side."You don't owe me anything anymore."I turned away. And this time, I meant it.I walked steadily, my skirt brushing through the flowers. The daisies swayed. Two petals landed on my shoe. I didn't look down."Elena!"His voice cracked. He struggled to his feet and stumbled after me, but someone grabbed him and held him back.It was Giovanna. She looked at me.For a long time.Something flickered in her aging eyes—calculation, hesitation, and the faintest trace of sympathy."If she's set on leaving, let her go."We won't force anyone to stay. Stop making a fool of yourself, Niccolo."At that, Niccolo st

I sighed."I'm not the one responsible for any of this."It's him. The man standing right in front of you. You've been blaming the wrong person all along."Aria faltered. The knife was still lodged in Niccolo's side, but she made no move to push it deeper."He did the same thing to you that he did to me. He gave you hope, then took it away."Aria flinched. My words struck a nerve.I looked at Niccolo. The wind swept in from deep in the field, and the smell of blood drowned out the daisies."You did this. All of it."You make promises to one woman after another, and then you just walk away like it's nothing."I met his eyes.I'd known those eyes for years. I'd seen every side of him.Tenderness. Calculation. Coldness. Every now and then, real feeling. Now they were bloodshot, the whites streaked red."You drove her mad."Two of his men came over, grabbed Aria by the arms, and started hauling her away. She let out a sharp, catlike scream. Her disheveled hair clung to her tear-streaked fa

In his mind, Niccolo opened the front door again. The house was dark. My slippers were still by the door, white with tiny daisies embroidered along the edges.Every time he kicked them, I'd tell him, "Watch it." But he never bothered to be careful.I'd always closed the bag of coffee beans on the kitchen counter after using it. Now it sat open.It took forever for the hot water to come through, so I always boiled a kettle in advance. And then there were the daisies.I kept them in a vase in the living room. Whenever I changed the water, I'd pick off the dead petals, then shake the drops off my fingers.Standing in the field, he caught the familiar scent of daisies drifting on the breeze. It was the same scent that used to fill the living room. The familiar scent brought back memories of the home he'd lost and the life they'd once shared.Maybe that's how people are.You take something for granted while you have it. Once it's gone, the emptiness gets into your bones and keeps you up at

Niccolo snatched the paper. There was a town name on it.It read "Daisyfield."Then he remembered. That was where we went every year on Leo's birthday. The door shut.He came after me.In the town where the daisies grew, the fields stretched as far as the eye could see. The wind rolled across them in long white waves.I crouched among the flowers, gently pushed the stems aside, and set the little cloth bag on the soil."Leo, Mommy never understood why you loved daisies so much."The breeze set the petals trembling."I think I understand now. They're so pure and beautiful. Looking at them makes me wish life could stay this way forever."I looked down at the bag of ashes."And they smell like you."I paused, my fingers still pinching the mouth of the bag."Mommy's going to lay you to rest here and visit you all the time. Is that okay?"I've been living in the past. I've held on to you so tightly that I haven't been able to move on."I slowly tipped the bag over. The white ashes fell onto

Niccolo went pale. He tried to speak."No... it was just an accident. I was drunk that night...""So being drunk makes it okay? I'm supposed to understand and stand by while you protect another woman and wait for her to give birth to your child?"I laughed until tears welled up in my eyes."Niccolo, I should have seen it a long time ago. The only person you've ever really loved is yourself."When I said that, the room went quiet. He gripped the doorframe, his knuckles white. Then he said something so cruel, he probably didn't even realize how much it hurt."Elena, I know you're really hurting right now..."But losing this baby isn't the end of the world. We can go home and try for another."I looked at him."And what makes you think," I said softly, "that I'd ever go back with you?"I threw off the sheet and put my feet on the floor."Our baby is dead. And you already gave up on me."I stood up, the hem of the hospital gown swaying."There's nothing left between us."With that, I walke

I stared at the doctor, stunned.A miscarriage... a week ago?It was absurd.I hadn't known a thing.I closed my eyes."How far along... was I?"The doctor looked at me with pity, and a little caution."About three months. You were still in your first trimester."Three months.I did the math.I had already been pregnant when I found out Aria was carrying his child.I hadn't known it, and neither had Niccolo.I stared at the ceiling, my fingers slowly tightening on the sheet. What if I'd known sooner? What if I'd noticed my period was late that day, bought a test, and seen two pink lines?Would I have stayed?Would I have stood in front of him holding that test and said, "I'm pregnant"?Would he have chosen me?Would that have stopped everything that came after? The questions kept coming. I knew how ridiculous they were. Not because the answer was no. Because I was still stuck on "what if."I shut my eyes for a moment.Even if I'd known sooner, even if I'd shown him the positive pregnan
