Chapter 4

Author: No Summer
I stayed in the hospital for a few days. Cesare never came to see me and only had his assistant send messages telling me to rest and fully recover before returning to work.

Meanwhile, the family chat was flooded with updates about him and Sofia.

He had rented a private Sicilian island to celebrate her birthday, with fireworks lasting three days. He brought her to the Family Council and gave her the heirloom ring. He even bought land to build a private ski resort, naming it after her.

I read every update without a flicker of emotion.

Once discharged, I returned to work as usual, meticulous and focused. Whenever something involved Cesare, I delegated it to other assistants. I did everything I could to avoid direct contact with him.

After a quiet week, he suddenly called and asked me to deliver encrypted files.

Once the delivery was complete and I was about to leave, he called me back. "I'm heading to a meeting with the Family. Sofia doesn't like eating alone. Stay and keep her company."

Sofia immediately issued orders. "I want steak. Cut it into small pieces and feed me."

Cesare shut the study door, and I swallowed my objections, moving to the table to cut the steak.

Once finished, she demanded walnuts and jackfruit. "I want some fruit after my meal. Peel them by hand."

The hard walnuts cut into my fingers and the jackfruit spikes pierced my skin. Blood ran between my fingers, but I endured and finished.

Then she sent me to the kitchen for the freshly cooked seafood chowder.

The steaming bowls burned my fingertips the moment I touched them. I couldn't hold it steady. My hand slipped, and the soup splashed down onto me. Several blisters formed instantly, and a wave of fiery pain tore through my hand.

Sofia laughed with delight at my misfortune, but as soon as the study door opened, she put on a fake scolding face. "Cesare said you're capable, but you can't even carry a bowl of soup without burning me."

Cesare rushed over, anxiously checking her reddened hands. Then he turned to me and berated me. "Sofia has been pampered her whole life and never hurt like this. How could you be so careless?"

When he noticed my injuries, he didn't say more. He scooped Sofia into his arms to get her treated and told me to follow them to the hospital.

Cesare drove hard and fast. Every time Sofia whimpered, he turned to check on her, his attention fixed on her alone.

Then suddenly, a speeding car slammed into us.

The impact slammed me against the car door, and a sharp pain tore through my side as blood soaked into my clothes.

Through the haze, I faintly heard the doctor's voice. "This lady just passed out from shock, but the passenger in the back is losing blood fast. If we don't treat her immediately, she may not survive."

"Take Sofia to the Family's private hospital first! I can't let anything happen to her. Nothing else matters!"

Cesare's urgent, furious roar was the last thing I heard before slipping back into darkness.

When I finally opened my eyes again, Luna was at my bedside, her eyes red and swollen.

"Elena, I just got back from Sicily when I heard what happened. The doctor said you were bleeding out. You almost didn't make it!"

She held me as she cried, and all the grief I'd kept bottled up finally spilled over. I clung to her, crying for what felt like forever.

Once my emotions had settled, she gave me water and started chatting. "Have the past few years been good? Did my brother ever bully you? What about your boyfriend? When will I meet him?"

I stiffened and replied softly, "Don Valeri separates business and personal matters. He never bullied me. My boyfriend... we've broken up."

Luna quickly comforted me. "It's okay. The next one will be better. I know plenty of reliable Capos in the Family. I'll introduce you!"

Just then, the hospital door opened, and Cesare walked in with a dark look. "Don't even think about introducing anyone to her. Every guy you know is a playboy. None of them are suitable."

"Cesare, stop talking nonsense!" Luna shot back. "You're hung up on Sofia, and you're trying to control who my best friend dates?"

Cesare's temper flared, and his voice came out sharp. "Feelings can't be forced. Stop trying to play matchmaker."

I tugged lightly on Luna's hand, then looked at Cesare calmly. "She was joking, Don Valeri. What brings you here?"

He looked at me, his tone softening a little. "Luna came straight to the hospital the moment she landed. I came to take her home and to check on you."

"Go already, will you?" Luna snapped at him. "Elena's seriously injured. Don't you dare dump any more work on her."

After Cesare left, Luna told me, "The nurses said yesterday you were hanging by a thread. My brother had people searching the whole city for blood to save you."

I froze for a moment before reality settled back in.

He did all that just so I wouldn't die.

If it ever came down to a choice between Sofia and me, he would never save me.

So, I was done fooling myself. I would never let myself hope anymore.

During that time, Sofia was locked in the villa's basement, enduring every kind of torment. She went hungry, barely slept, and every cruel thing she had ever done to me had come back to crush her a hundredfold. When Cesare stepped into the basement, she lunged at him like a drowning woman clinging to a lifeline. She scrambled across the floor, wrapping herself around his leg, sobbing uncontrollably. "Cesare, I was wrong! I-I know I was wrong! I won't bother you or Elena ever again. I'll stay far away. I'll never appear in your life. Please just let me go."Cesare looked down at her, his expression cold and unreadable. There wasn't a flicker of mercy in his eyes. Without another word, he tossed a stack of photos onto the floor in front of her.Sofia's eyes widened, and her face drained of color when she saw the photos. They revealed the past she had tried so hard to bury. It showed how she had struggled in Sicily, trading her body for resources, ruining her reputation, and only ret

As Cesare watched me walk away without looking back, he sank into his chair and was unable to hold back his tears any longer. He knew that this time he had truly lost me, and he would never get me back.He stayed in the coffee shop for a long while, only getting up when an employee informed him it was closing time.Outside, a heavy storm had rolled in. Rain came down in sheets, cold and unforgiving, but he didn't bother with an umbrella. He let it drench him completely as he wandered through the streets without direction or purpose. He didn't know how long he had walked. He only realized where his feet had carried him when he looked up and found himself standing below my apartment building. He didn't dare ring the bell. Instead, he curled up near my door like a lost child, whispering my name again and again."Elena... Elena..."Rain mixed with tears, blurring his vision. He was exhausted. At some point, he fell asleep slumped against the wall. When he woke again, Cesare found

On the plane, Cesare ran through the moment he would see me over and over in his mind, rehearsing countless apologies. He had even prepared a redesigned Family crest necklace, planning to propose. When the plane landed, he went straight to the address Luna had given him, heading for the coffee shop tucked away in Chicago's Little Italy. When he pushed open the door, the bell chimed softly. Then, he looked up and saw me instantly.A single month had changed me.I was no longer the woman who wore fitted office suits and moved carefully around him. I sat in the corner in loose, comfortable clothes, my hair gathered in a simple knot that revealed the delicate curve of my neck. I had a faint smile on my lips, and my gaze was calm and composed.Cesare's heart skipped a beat, and he held back the urge to run to me and pull me into his arms. He walked over slowly, his voice tense and unsure."It's been a while, Elena."I looked up at him, expression calm and unreadable, and simply nodd

Early the next morning, Cesare drove back to the estate. The moment he reached the gates, he saw Sofia on her knees in the dirt, held down by two bodyguards. Her hair was a mess, her face streaked with tears, and she was still cursing me under her breath."Elena is a piece of trash. She's the reason I ended up like this."Members of the Family passing by slowed to stare, whispering to one another.A few maids who had always been close to me finally lost their patience."Ms. Costa, you're out of line. Ms. Carter worked here for four years and never did anything wrong. You were the one bullying her.""Exactly. Elena never fought back because she has a good temper, yet you kept pushing her."Sofia was stunned speechless. When she spotted Cesare approaching, she scrambled across the gravel and clung to his leg like a lifeline."Cesare, look at them. They're all ganging up on me for Elena. Fire them. Fire all of them."Cesare kicked her away. His eyes were ice-cold. "I told you to

  • The Don Who Couldn’t Keep Me   Chapter 8

"Cesare...?" Sofia covered her face, her eyes wide with disbelief. His gaze was icy, utterly devoid of the tenderness he had once shown her. Any trace of leniency was gone. He felt nothing but revulsion for the woman in front of him. If it weren't for her, he never would have lost me."Why is it always Elena!" Sofia cried, completely losing control. "She's just a secretary! Some nobody! I knew the first day I got back that she had feelings for you. It's better she's gone! You said I'm the only one you love! What does that even mean now?"Cesare didn't answer. Once he faced his own feelings, he didn't even have the energy to argue with Sofia. But Sofia had been spoiled. The more he ignored her, the angrier she got at me. She grabbed the cup and decorations from the desk, smashing them one after another on the floor. "You're in love with her! You want her back!" she shrieked, almost unhinged.Cesare looked at her and finally understood. How had he been so blind? He had hurt me

When Cesare returned to the estate, a few of the secretaries immediately surrounded him, handing over stacks of documents. "Don Valeri, here are the recent financial reports," one said. "This is the list of Families withdrawing from cooperation," another added. "And here's the update on the maids. A batch of senior staff are leaving."He flipped through the papers, headache building with every page. He slammed them onto the desk and roared, "I've been gone for just a few days, and the Family is already falling apart? You didn't even try to hold onto our business partners?"The room fell silent. After a long pause, one secretary spoke up timidly, "Don Valeri, Ms. Carter usually handles these tasks."He instinctively wanted to call her name, then froze, remembering I was gone. His face darkened further. "If she can do it, why can't any of you?"No one dared answer. Everyone knew that for four years, I had run everything flawlessly, keeping the Family in perfect order.
