Chapter 4

مؤلف: Jovie
The spot next to me was already cold by the time I woke up the next day, just like how it had always been for the past three years.

I used to always come up with excuses for Lorenzo, saying things like him just being used to waking up early, or being too busy with work, or naturally disliking intimacy after sex.

But now, I learned that it wasn't because he disliked intimacy. It was just that he disliked intimacy with me.

I suppressed the nausea in my guts, cleaned up the mess left from the previous night, changed into my work clothes, and headed toward the company.

I realized that something was wrong as soon as I set foot into the company.

Everyone's eyes were still fixed on me, but even more blatantly, disdainfully, and with more schadenfreude than yesterday. It was like they were waiting for some drama to unfold.

My colleague next to me, Nadia Russo, cautiously tugged at my sleeve and whispered, "Eliana, there's a problem with the database from the case you were handling. The Underboss wants to see you at his office."

I felt my heart sink.

I pushed open the door to the Underboss', Claudio Bianchi's office, and saw that Fiore was already seated inside.

She was wearing a white suit with exquisite makeup on her face. She even gave me a fake smile when she saw me walking into the room.

"Eliana, you and Fiore had been jointly managing the database for the Famiglia's cases. But now, all the core data has been corrupted, and it's all garbled. Explain this."

Claudio spoke while rubbing his temples, looking exhausted.

I was just about to speak when Fiore immediately cut in first and said, "I know that I locked the computer after checking the database with my other colleagues that night. Only Eliana and I have access to the computer, and I was with the other colleagues for the entire night. They can vouch for me."

She then paused and looked at me with a sly expression on her face. "As for Ms. Torre… Nobody knows where she was that night."

I quickly thought back about that night, my mind racing.

I was with Vincenzo at the apartment that night. He had prepared a candlelit dinner for me and even opened up a bottle of wine he claimed was a special brew from Rotugal. It tasted a little funky, but I didn't think much about it and drank it all up.

After that, I fell into a daze and made love with him all night long.

So, Vincenzo hadn't been romantic that night after all. It had just been a scheme all along.

He had spiked the wine long before I drank it so that I would blank out and give them enough time to frame me for the blunder, and so I wouldn't be able to defend myself.

"I was with Don Caputo that night," I said, gritting my teeth as I spoke.

I had no choice but to expose my three-year secret relationship with Lorenzo to save myself. However, the office door opened just then, and Lorenzo walked in, expressionlessly tossing an iPad onto Claudio's desk.

It was video footage from the office surveillance cameras, showing him entering the office together with Fiore on the exact night the data was corrupted.

"I was with Fiore discussing a new dock project that night, and this is the full CCTV footage as proof. It's impossible that Fiore was the one who did it."

Lorenzo didn't even spare me a glance, speaking in such a calm manner that he might as well just be describing the weather.

All my blood ran cold at that moment.

His Plan A was to expose my intimate photos and ruin my promotion. Meanwhile, he came up with a Plan B to frame me for the database error so Fiore could maintain a clean record.

If the photos didn't ruin me first, then this disgrace of me ruining the database would ensure that I could never recover in this industry.

They had set up a trap for me from the very start, luring me in step by step, completely removing me as an "obstacle" from Fiore's path to her promotion.

"I understand," Claudio said with a sigh. "Since you're unable to provide an alibi, Eliana, then you will be held responsible for this. Rebuilding the database will cost millions of dollars. But considering you're a long-time employee in the Famiglia, you can just pay the fine, and we'll leave it at that."

"It wasn't me!" I exclaimed in a shaky voice. "I never did it!"

Claudio waved his hand dismissively at me and stopped me from fighting back. I could only walk out of his office in a dejected manner.

I'd only just reached the hallway when I heard Lorenzo's voice from the back.

"You don't have to worry about the fine. I'll pay it on your behalf. You've already lost the chance at the promotion because of your photos, but Fiore must have no stains on her record at all. Just admit the fault and take one for her."

I stopped in my tracks, looked up, and forced the tears back in.

So to him, my career, reputation, and life could never hold up to Fiore's career—something that couldn't get a single stain on it.

"I'll make dinner for you myself tonight to make it up to you," he added in a self-righteous tone he probably thought was a gentle one.

I didn't look back at him nor stop walking forward.

I couldn't afford to eat the dinner he was planning to make for me. The price for it would be my entire life in his hands.

I went back to my seat, turned on my laptop, and opened a blank document before typing out my resignation letter.

All three years of our relationship were only worth this thin sheet of A4 paper now.

I printed it out, signed my name, and went knocking on Claudio's office. I set down the letter before him.

"Thank you for the Famiglia's support. This is my week's notice for my resignation. I've already made up my mind about leaving. Kindly acknowledge it as soon as possible."

Claudio looked at me with shock in his eyes.

"Are you really planning to resign, Eliana? Someone's already agreed to pay the fine on your behalf. You—"

"I've made up my mind."

He looked at me for a while. Then he sighed and signed off on my resignation letter, acknowledging that my notice period and the resignation procedures would be completed within the week.

I took a copy of the letter back from him. It was very light, but it weighed down heavily on me, almost suffocating me.

I would be flying off to Grayland in exactly one week as well.

And when that time came, I would be 30,000 feet above sea level in the air, leaving behind this utterly rotten city and never returning for the rest of my life.

I cocked my eyebrow at Lorenzo without denying anything.Gastone Orlandi was the first person I met after landing in Grayland. He respected me, appreciated me, supported all of my endeavors, and even quietly arranged for more bodyguards to keep me safe while I was being harassed by Lorenzo and Vincenzo.Gaston was nothing like those two hooligans."He doesn't fucking care about you!" Lorenzo yelled at me at the top of his voice. "He knew that Vincenzo and I would come pestering you immediately once you came back to Deyork, yet he still made you come all by yourself! He doesn't even love you!"He sounded like he was also trying to convince himself besides me.I chuckled and looked at him with an icy gaze."Shut up. You have no right to judge Gastone. He respected my choices, knowing that I wanted to come alone to Deyork to handle things myself. That's why he never stopped me. He only quietly sent his people to protect me and keep me safe. This alone is something that you will neve

Lorenzo caught sight of Vincenzo outside Eliana's apartment building, looking equally as disheveled and worse for wear. But now, the brothers had turned into sworn, bitter enemies, all for the sake of one woman. Their relationship had soured completely.Lorenzo had his bodyguards forcibly take Vincenzo back to Deyork while he remained in Grayland, waiting outside Eliana's apartment building every day, just as Vincenzo had.He sent her flowers, jewelry, and everything she used to like, but Eliana never even spared them a glance now.He tried apologizing to her and admitting fault for his sins, telling her that he was wrong, he was sorry, and that he was deeply in love with her. He begged for another chance, but Eliana only stared at him like he was a mere stranger."You're acting a lot like an investor who bought the wrong company stock and is now desperately trying to recoup and salvage their losses, Lorenzo Caputo. But all the hurt and damage you caused me can't be erased with ju

In the end, Vincenzo called up Lorenzo instead. His voice was hoarse and desperate and tinged with a hint of lunacy and sobbing."Lorenzo! I'm done! I'm finished!"Lorenzo's heart dropped to his stomach when he suddenly received a tearful call from Vincenzo in the middle of the night, wondering if his brother had run into some serious problems while overseas."What's the matter with you? Did you have too much to drink?" he asked with a frown, grabbing his coat and getting ready to leave.Vincenzo began slurring and mumbling incoherently on the other end of the line like he was just talking to himself. There would even be times when the sobbing was suddenly interrupted by a series of gags and sounds of throwing up.In other words, Vincenzo couldn't explain what was going on with him.It wasn't until Lorenzo's hand was already on the office door handle, about to open it, when he suddenly heard the name that Vincenzo kept exclaiming."Eliana! She said she hated me! She said I was

It was supposed to be Lorenzo and Fiore's one-month anniversary.Fiore insisted that Lorenzo go to the movies with her, so he did and cancelled all his important meetings just to be with her. However, halfway through the movie, urgent calls kept flooding his phone one after another.Lorenzo looked down and replied to a few text messages, but Fiore suddenly snatched his phone away and turned it off."Lorenzo Caputo! Are you even keeping me company in the first place? We're on a date, and yet, you've been on your phone the entire time! What the hell do you mean by that?"Lorenzo's temples throbbed. All of the pent-up frustration he'd built up over the past month finally exploded all at once.He got into a massive fight with Fiore. She said hurtful things to him, calling him a bastard and a cheater for still thinking about Eliana. She also downright insulted Eliana and said that she deserved to have her nude photos leaked all over the internet. This was the first time Lorenzo ever

"Hello, Eliana speaking. May I know who this is?"Lorenzo gulped as he fought to stay calm, only daring to speak just as she was about to hang up."It's me."Eliana seemed to have recognized his voice at once. When he was about to ask her if she was doing well in a foreign land, he was suddenly cut off by a series of beeping dial tones. She'd just hung up on him. This had never happened before, as he was always the one who hung up on her, not the other way around. He immediately dialled her number again, but this time he only heard a robotic message informing him that his calls couldn't be connected anymore.Lorenzo tossed the phone down and covered his face in anguish. He'd finally figured it out now.Eliana hadn't blocked his phone number, not because she still had feelings for him, but because she never even had his number saved since they barely talked on the phone at all.Yet, as soon as she recognized his voice, she immediately blocked him.He kept hearing the busy t

Fiore fell sobbing into Lorenzo's arms, exclaiming loudly that yes, she would very happily agree to get together with him.The crowd erupted in thunderous applause. Lorenzo slid his arm around Fiore's waist and pulled her into his embrace, but somehow, he just couldn't feel joyful about it. The hollow feeling was still there.Subsequently, the days Lorenzo spent with Fiore after that were far more difficult than he'd ever imagined.Fiore was spoiled and willful, and she often demanded his constant company for meals and shopping trips, even if he was in the middle of something urgent. She would always whine and pester him about it until he gave in.Lorenzo began thinking about Eliana more and more.He remembered her always being the quiet woman who'd silently bring him a warm cup of coffee when he worked overtime at the office. She'd prepare hangover pills and a warm meal after coming home from social events and stay by his side all night long. She'd also set aside her own work a
