Chapter 3

Author: Greedy Kitty
I was locked in confinement. Aside from Cesare Esposito, the staff who brought my meals each day, I had no contact with anyone.

Still, I had to get out of this room before I could plan my escape.

I asked Cesare to relay messages, but he always said Fiorenzo was not at the manor.

I knew Gianna was behind this. I decided to take a gamble.

One rainy night, I confirmed that Fiorenzo's Rolls-Royce Cullinan had not left the grounds. Cesare delivered my dinner through the small window in the door right on schedule.

Just as he was about to leave, I called out softly, "Cesare!"

He seemed to know what I was going to say and answered without hesitation.

"Signorina Diamante, Don Ricci is not at the manor today."

"It seems Gianna has given you plenty of incentive, but if I die, do you think Fiorenzo won't take his anger out on you?"

Then I broke the porcelain plate and slashed at my wrist. Blood poured out, dripping onto the expensive handwoven wool carpet.

I smiled at Cesare through the blood, a smile that said I would get what I wanted.

Through my fading consciousness, I heard Fiorenzo's anxious voice. He had nearly lost all the composure and elegance befitting a Don.

"Listen, I don't care how hard it's raining right now. The blood I need must arrive immediately.

"String up Cesare and hang him in the basement.

"If anything happens to my Principessa, everyone will pay a terrible price!"

When I opened my eyes again, I heard him say tiredly, "You're awake. Looks like I'll have to replace all your dishes with plastic ones."

"No, Papa. I've come to my senses." I lowered my eyes, showing just the right amount of vulnerability.

Fiorenzo studied me, weighing my words.

"If I disappoint you, you can confine me anytime."

In the end, he gave in.

For the first time since the wedding, he kissed my forehead. His tone was as helpless and indulgent as always.

"Clarissa, you know I can never say no to you."

After regaining my freedom, I learned to hide my time. Fiorenzo took the doctor's advice and allowed me to walk in the manor gardens to clear my mind.

I walked alone in the garden, thinking of ways to escape, when a familiar figure entered my line of sight.

It was my piano instructor from two years ago, the one I had left without saying goodbye.

"Signor Lombardi, it's been a while." I greeted him.

"Signorina Diamante."

Luigi Lombardi's awkward movements drew my attention to the fact that he was now missing several fingers.

"What happened to your hand?" I walked over, concerned.

"It's nothing. This is the price of gambling debts. Now Don Ricci has me working here as a gardener." He moved his hands behind his back.

My instincts told me there might be more to this story.

"Out for a walk?" He changed the subject.

"Yes, but it's just as boring. If only I could leave this place forever." I shrugged with disappointment.

"Perhaps I can help you." Luigi looked at me with certainty.

I had not expected an opportunity to come this quickly.

"That's wonderful. How?" I said quietly, my voice excited.

"We can use the delivery truck to get out. The driver is from my hometown. Today is his last delivery here. I'll go talk to him."

Luigi's blue eyes lit up as he ran toward the truck unloading flowers.

"Clarissa, you're flirting again! I'm going to tell Fiorenzo and see how your Papa punishes you!"

Damn it! Gianna appeared out of nowhere.

She thought she had caught me red-handed, but as she brushed past me, she accidentally pushed me into a mud puddle.

At that moment, Fiorenzo's voice also carried over from the distance. "Have you seen Clarissa?"

"Tell him I'm not here. I'll go clean myself up!" I said in a low but stern voice.

Not wanting to anger Fiorenzo, Gianna hurried past and intercepted him behind a row of small pine trees. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Luigi helped me onto the truck. I said to him, "We need to hurry."

Everything went so smoothly that it felt suspicious. Though I did not want to think too much. I just wanted to get away from Fiorenzo's land as quickly as possible.

Luigi and I pawned my jewelry and bought a secondhand yacht. Finally, we sailed toward the shores of freedom.

I tried to relax my body and smiled as I teased, "I even managed to lose you, didn't I? As for how I knew, I saw the news. Right now, the only people who would follow me are either you or them. At least I know now it's not you."Fiorenzo hesitated for a moment before laughing heartily. He swept me up in his arms. "Still planning to leave?""No, I need to be here to make sure you're safe." I spoke in a slow, clingy tone.He was pleased, but only I knew my palms were drenched in sweat.I decided to act before dawn, when even the staff who delivered early morning groceries had not yet arrived. After nightfall, I changed into a pure white nightgown and took a bottle of red wine to Fiorenzo's room.He looked up at me with an amused expression. This pervert loved seeing me in white because he enjoyed defiling pure things.I forced myself forward and pressed against him. He impatiently lifted my skirt. I stopped his hand and pointed at the wine. "A little atmosphere, Fiorenzo."He got

Like the car speeding forward on the highway, my mind was racing to figure out how to respond."No need to be nervous. I won't hurt you. I know you have nothing to do with the Ricci family's crimes. I found you because I'm hoping you can help us obtain important evidence to convict Fiorenzo Ricci." Rory looked at my cautious expression as he spoke."Do you know what happens to people who betray the mafia? Besides, I don't even know if we're being followed right now." I looked nervously out the rear window. There was indeed a black Dodge following us."The one behind us is my colleague. I'll ensure your safety, both now and in the future."I looked at him through the rearview mirror. His smile was honest and handsome, the kind that easily put people at ease.He brought me to an office at the police station and got me hot coffee and a chocolate donut. I nodded my thanks, then said, "Let's begin. What do you want to know? What do you want me to go back and get?""No rush, Ms. Diam

I had been recuperating in the Ricci family's private luxury hospital room for a long time and had mostly recovered. The past few days, news feeds had been filled with stories about the Ricci family being caught up in a bribery scandal. I wondered what method he would use to escape this time.Fiorenzo came to visit me when he had time. "I'll buy you a property near the Melodia Theater. You can go to work normally, even tour. Just remember to come home."He gently stroked my hand. His once bright eyes were now filled with bloodshot veins. I even felt he had aged recently."Knock, knock." Matteo rapped on the door and entered. He said viciously, "Boss, we caught that bitch."Fiorenzo brought several men with him, and I walked with them into the basement of the manor. The dark, damp environment and nauseating smell made it clear this was where the Ricci family imprisoned and punished traitors. In the small interrogation room, Gianna was suspended in the center with her hands bound.

I did not know when he had transferred me to this lavishly decorated room. Either I had slept too deeply, or it was that damned sedative again.Anger and fear drove my instinctive retaliation. I punched him in the chest. Battle-hardened as he was, he clearly felt no pain. Instead, a wicked smile curled at the corner of his mouth."Clarissa, isn't this what you've always craved?" He rolled over, pinning me beneath him, trying to enter me."Get off me, you shameless bastard!" I cursed, every cell in my body resisting him."Before, you were my adopted daughter. I restrained my feelings to keep the family from falling into scandal. But now you're Fernanda. I can make that identity real for you, and then we can truly be together." He bit my earlobe as he spoke in that seductive voice of his."You want me as your mistress? What about your delicate little wife? Does she know what you're doing?"With that, I bit down hard on his shoulder until the taste of blood spread through my mouth.

Two months later, the restaurant where I worked as a server happened to need someone to play piano. The owner did not believe I could play at first, but after I performed an impromptu jazz piece while still wearing my apron, he said, "Fernanda, you're a genius. You shouldn't be buried here. Interested in performing on a bigger stage?""Of course." I never wanted to live in that leaky basement again. Fernanda was my alias now.The owner happily kissed my cheek. "I'll arrange for you to perform at the Melodia Theater. The governor will be there too. If you do well, you could become the theater's resident pianist."Seven years of isolation meant that at 21, I had no proper credentials. That night, I had swum ashore on my last breath. But with nothing to my name, I could only work multiple jobs while struggling to adapt to this complex society.Still, no matter what, freedom felt incredible. For the theater performance, the band and I practiced hard every day. I had to win this oppo

We planned to head to the city of Morok. The Curiaca family there was at odds with the Ricci family. Fiorenzo would not venture there easily. On the boat, Luigi told me the truth. His missing fingers were also courtesy of Fiorenzo, because Fiorenzo believed Luigi had developed feelings for me that he should not have.I caressed his damaged hand. "So do you really have feelings for me?"His cheeks flushed red. He nodded. This was an honesty Fiorenzo did not possess.I realized that perhaps I should find someone close to my age, have a normal romance, and live an ordinary life.At this thought, tears suddenly fell without my control. Luigi carefully wiped away my hot tears, his tone as reverent as a believer facing God."Clarissa, from the first moment I saw you, I secretly vowed to become your most loyal knight. As long as you are happy, I will give you everything, even my life."Under his gaze, I kissed his forehead. "Thank you."As the boat pulled away from the mainland, I p
