The first strike didn’t land on her skin. Instead, Salvatore brought the flogger down across the mattress beside her hip, the crack of leather on fabric loud enough to make Olivia jump violently against her restraints.

“Again,” Salvatore commanded, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. “Who do you belong to?”

Olivia’s teeth clenched so hard her jaw ached. She refused to give him the satisfaction. She refused to be broken. “I told you,” she hissed through gritted teeth, “I belong to—”

The second strike caught her across the fleshy part of her thigh. It wasn’t a brutal blow, but it was precise—a stinging, hot bite that made her gasp and arch her back instinctively. Her skin bloomed a sudden, angry pink where the leather had connected.

“You’re wasting my time, Olivia,” Salvatore said, stepping closer. He didn’t look angry.

“I’ll ask one more time,” he said, his voice dropping to a conversational tone that felt far more dangerous than shouting ever could. He stood at the foot of the bed, the flogger dangling loosely from his hand. “And if you refuse, I will find other ways to make you talk. Ways that won’t leave marks, but will certainly make you regret your silence.”

Olivia’s breath hitched. The threat was implicit, heavy in the air between them. She looked at him—really looked at him—and saw the absolute certainty in his gaze. He wasn’t bluffing. He had dismantled her entire life in a matter of hours; he could certainly dismantle her composure.

“You can’t keep me here forever,” she said, though the conviction was draining from her voice with every passing second.

Salvatore tilted his head, a lock of dark hair falling over his forehead.

“I can,” he said simply. “And I will.”

He moved to the side of the bed, his shadow falling over her. The leather tails of the flogger brushed against her ankle, a cold, teasing sensation that made her flinch.

“You think this is about power, Olivia. It isn’t. It’s about order.” He leaned down, his face inches from hers, his hazel eyes boring into her brown ones. “The world is chaos. People like you—people who think they can just walk away from things they’ve started—you create chaos. I am simply bringing you into alignment.”

He straightened up and walked toward the small bar in the corner of the room. The clink of glass on glass echoed through the silence. He poured another drink, his movements slow and deliberate.

“Drink this,” he said, returning to the bed with the tumbler.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, the weight of his body causing the bed to dip toward him. The amber liquid swirled against the crystal sides of the glass, catching the dim ambient light.

“I’m not drinking anything from you,” Olivia spat, her voice trembling despite her bravado.

Salvatore didn’t flinch. He held the glass steady, his gaze never leaving hers. “It’s not poisoned. It’s scotch. High end, since you seem to have no taste for anything better.”

He reached out with his free hand, his fingers wrapping around her jaw again—not crushing, but firm enough that she couldn’t turn away. He pressed the rim of the glass against her lips.

“Drink,” he said. It wasn’t a request.

Olivia clamped her mouth shut, her eyes burning with tears she refused to let fall. The smell of the alcohol was sharp, overwhelming in the small space between them.

Salvatore didn’t pull the glass away. He held it there, steady and patient, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw with agonizing slowness. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, broken only by the sound of her own frantic heartbeat drumming in her ears.

“Stubbornness is a virtue in business, Olivia,” he murmured, his voice smooth as silk. “But in a relationship, it’s just a barrier. And I am very good at removing barriers.”

He tilted the glass slightly. A single drop of scotch escaped the rim, landing on her lower lip. It was warm and sharp, a tiny invasion that made her shudder.

“One sip,” he said. “Then we can discuss how you’d like to spend the rest of your afternoon.”

Her resolve was fraying at the edges.

Her jaw tightened, the muscle working beneath her skin as she fought the urge to yield. But the warmth of the liquid on her lip was a constant, stinging reminder of his control. Her throat worked in a dry swallow.

“Fine,” she rasped, her voice barely audible.

She opened her mouth just enough, and he tipped the glass. The scotch hit her tongue—burn and honey and smoke—forcing her to swallow reflexively. She gagged slightly, the harshness of the alcohol catching in her throat, but she forced herself to finish the sip before pulling away.

Salvatore set the glass on the nightstand with a satisfied click. He didn’t move from his position on the bed, his presence looming over her like a predator that had successfully cornered its prey.

“Good girl,” he said softly. The praise felt more insulting than a slap.

Olivia’s face burned, not from the alcohol, but from the sheer humiliation of the words. She turned her head away, staring at the dark wall, her breath coming in jagged hitches.

“Don’t call me that,” she whispered.

Salvatore’s hand moved from her jaw to the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in her hair. He didn’t pull, but the weight of his touch was enough to remind her exactly where she was. He leaned closer, his lips brushing against the shell of her ear.

“You’ll learn to love it,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Or you’ll learn to fear it. Either way, you’ll accept it.”

He released her hair and stood up, the mattress springing back into place without him. He walked toward the wardrobe again, his footsteps silent on the thick carpet.

“I’m going to prepare lunch,”

The unbuckling of the brass fittings was a quiet relief, but the weight of her surrender remained heavy in the room.As her arms fell from the wooden headboard, Olivia’s muscles trembled violently from the strain. She couldn’t hold herself up; her strength had completely evaporated, leaving her limp and shivering on the mattress. Before she could collapse into the cold sheets, Salvatore’s powerful arms caught her around her waist and shoulders, lifting her effortless frame into his lap.He didn’t move away. He sat back against the heavy mahogany headboard, drawing her tight against his chest. He pulled the velvet duvet up and around them both, cocooning her bare, burning skin in thick, soft warmth.“Shh, dolcezza,” Salvatore murmured, his deep baritone a low, grounding rumble against her ear. “I have you. It’s over.”Olivia buried her face in the crook of his neck, her chest heaving as silent, hot tears finally spilled over her lashes, soaking into the collar of his open dark shirt. S

The ledger sat open on the mahogany desk in the corner of the master bedroom, its cream-colored pages catching the dim, flickering light from the stone fireplace. Olivia had spent the entire night staring at its dark copperplate script, her eyes tracing the rigid rules over and over until the words burned into her mind like a brand.Obedience. Protocol. Discipline. When the heavy oak doors opened at precisely seven o’clock that evening, Olivia was sitting on the edge of the velvet armchair, dressed in the simple silk robe Salvatore had left for her. She didn’t rise. She couldn’t. Her heart was hammering against her ribs with a frantic, suffocating rhythm that made her fingertips go numb.Salvatore walked into the room with his usual slow, measured grace. He had shed his suit jacket and tie; his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, his sleeves neatly folded back to his elbows. In his right hand, he carried a long, dark velvet box with gold brass latches. He set the box down o

The blue silk dress hung in the walk-in wardrobe like an exhibit in a museum—a liquid drape of deep sapphire that caught the soft recessed lighting of the dressing room. When Olivia put it on, she realized it had been tailored to her exact measurements without a single fitting. It clung to the curve of her waist, fell in a long, unbroken line to her ankles, and left her shoulders and collarbone entirely bare. There were no zippers or buttons she could reach easily; it fastened at the back with a row of small, fabric-covered hooks, requiring her to stretch her sore arms behind her back to secure herself into his chosen armor. At precisely five minutes to six, the electronic lock on her bedroom door chimed, and Lorenzo stepped into the entryway. He offered a respectful nod, his eyes remaining strictly professional.“The Don is waiting in the formal dining hall, Mrs. Capone,” Lorenzo said, gesturing toward the corridor. “If you will follow me.”Olivia didn’t argue. The weight of her sign

The morning arrived not with the gentle rise of sunlight through a window, but with the quiet, mechanical hum of the master suite’s automated blackout shades retracting.Olivia opened her eyes to find the vast room flooded with crisp, northern daylight. She was alone in the king-sized canopy bed, the space beside her cold and undisturbed. For a brief, disorienting second, her mind tried to pull her back to the cramped, noisy dormitory on 112th Street—to the sound of traffic, her alarm blaring for an early library shift, and the aroma of cheap coffee brewing in a communal kitchen. Then she moved, and the sharp ache in her lower body shattered the illusion. She sat up slowly, pulling the velvet duvet tight around her shoulders. On the nightstand sat the dark leather-bound folder Salvatore had left hours before, its brass corners gleaming beneath the sunlight. Beside it rested a silver tray containing a single white porcelain cup of dark espresso and a gold-plated fountain pen.The elect

The heavy oak door clicked shut, leaving Olivia alone in a room that felt entirely stripped of air.She remained slumped across the vanity, her lower body numb, her bare skin trembling violently against the freezing marble. The silence in the master suite wasn’t peaceful; it was a vast, heavy void that pressed into her chest until she could barely expand her lungs.Slowly, agonizingly, Olivia pushed herself up with her unmined hands. Her wrists bore deep, angry red indentations from the silk ribbon, the skin tender and hot to the touch. Every muscle in her core protested as she swung her legs over the edge of the vanity, her feet touching the plush rug. The moment her weight hit her feet, a sharp, white-hot ache shot through her pelvis, forcing a soft, broken gasp from her throat. She reached out, her fingers catching the edge of the dark wood vanity to keep from collapsing onto the floor. On the floor beside her lay the remnants of her composure: the silk blouse tossed aside, the fro

He leaned over her, his weight pressing her flat against the vanity. One hand came up to cup her jaw, forcing her face to turn toward the mirror. She saw herself—pale, disheveled, eyes wide with a terror that was rapidly being overtaken by something else entirely.“Look at what you are,” he commanded, his voice low and steady. “This is the woman who thought she could say no to me.”His free hand moved down, his fingers tracing the line of her thigh with a clinical precision that made her skin crawl. He found the center of her heat, his touch unapologetic and firm. Olivia’s breath hitched, her body betraying her with a sharp, involuntary arch.“You’re already reacting,” he noted, his thumb pressing into her sensitive flesh. “Your body is far more honest than your mouth.”He pulled away just as quickly as he had approached, leaving her shivering in the sudden cold.He stood back, watching the way her chest heaved beneath the bare skin of her torso. The silence in the room was absolute,
