Chapter 1

I had just paid my parents' annual care fees in full and headed into town to pick up some baby clothes.

When it was time to check out, I pulled out Jack’s credit card and handed it to the cashier.

The card machine beeped twice before the cashier shook her head apologetically.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. This card has been declined.”

A faint confusion flickered through me before my phone buzzed sharply in my pocket.

The caller ID simply read: Lily. Jack’s Personal Secretary.

I answered the call, and Lily’s shrill, triumphant voice cut straight through the line.

“Ella! I froze your card! Do you have any idea how hard Jack works to keep this company afloat? You laze around at home all day, splurging on pointless frivolities like this baby dress!”

“From today onward, I’m taking charge of every single cent you spend. You need my explicit approval for any purchase, and your monthly spending cap is six hundred euros exactly. That dress costs two hundred and ninety-eight euros!”

A low, amused chuckle escaped me.

The shop owner leaned against the marble counter, casually scrolling through a news podcast on his phone.

“Twenty years ago, the Bellandi family vanished from the public eye. No one has seen the Don or Donna in public since, but everyone knows their empire still runs every major industry in Italy. Some say they retired to a private villa in Tuscany; others claim they still pull all the strings from behind closed doors.”

The owner glanced up, shifting his gaze between me and the fleeting flash of a vintage family photo on his screen.

He muttered under his breath, “Y’know, you bear an uncanny resemblance to the Bellandi Donna in that old picture from the 2000s. Could you possibly be her daughter? Just kidding. How could the Donna's daughter ever have her card declined? Oh. I believe you have enough money to pay for the dress, don’t you?”

I offered him a faint, noncommittal smile and pulled a handful of cash from my wallet to settle the bill.

In that instant, a sharp, cramping pain surged through my abdomen.

I doubled over, gripping the counter tightly as cold sweat soaked through the back of my shirt.

Alarmed, the shop owner immediately dialed emergency services, and I was rushed to San Raffaele Private Hospital, one of Milan’s top medical facilities.

A nurse approached my hospital bed with a payment slip, and I handed over every card in my wallet. Minutes later, she returned with an awkward, sympathetic expression.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Every one of your cards has been suspended.”

Drawing in a slow, steady breath, I dialed Jack’s number.

The call rang three times before being picked up, yet Lily’s voice was the one that greeted me.

“What is it now, Ella? Jack’s busy in a critical corporate meeting. He doesn’t have time for your trivial matters.”

“I’m at the hospital. I think I'm going into labor, and I need to cover the medical fees.”

I forced each word out through gritted teeth, enduring the throbbing ache in my belly.

Lily let out a disdainful scoff.

“Childbirth isn’t some extravagant medical procedure. You're probably thinking about booking an overpriced VIP suite? Forget it. I’ll send someone over to sort out the basic fees later.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

I stared at the blacked-out screen, my eyes turning icy with certainty. I should never have trusted Lily.

Then I called Tom, the old steward of the Bellandi family who had served my father for forty years.

“Miss Ella.” The voice on the other end was steady.

“Tom, I’m at San Raffaele Private Hospital. All my accounts have been frozen.”

Tom responded in an even, calm tone.

“I’ll be there within ten minutes.”

After wrapping up the last of the company affairs, I checked into the family’s private hospital without delay. This time, with two lives hanging in the balance, I dared not be careless for a single second. My parents moved into the adjacent VIP suite the same day, and Tom took full charge of all external business, shielding me from even the slightest disturbance. My father had the top obstetric team in Europe on 24-hour standby, stationing two nurses outside my door around the clock. My mother spent every waking minute by my side, simmering bone broth in the suite’s kitchen, folding tiny linen onesies stitched with the Bellandi crest, and adjusting the thermostat three times an hour to make sure I was comfortable. One afternoon, she was peeling a pear for me, the knife gliding smoothly through the flesh, when she paused mid-motion. “Ella,” she said, her voice softer than usual, “I’ve been meaning to ask you something. What will you do when the baby grows up and asks where their fa

For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Then Jack’s face twisted with rage. He jumped to his feet, pointing a shaking finger at us.“You think you’re better than us?” he screamed. “You think you’re so special just because you have a big house? You’re nothing but a bunch of liars! You were probably poor your whole lives! You just borrowed this house to make us look stupid!”Lily jumped up too, her face red with fury. “Yeah! You’re just jealous of us! You’re jealous that Jack loves me and not you! That’s why you’re doing this! You’re a bitter, ugly old woman who can’t keep her husband!”They screamed and yelled and called us every name they could think of. They said we were frauds. They said we were criminals. They said we would rot in hell.I didn’t say anything. My parents didn’t say anything. We just sat there, drinking our tea, and let them rant. They weren’t worth getting upset over. They were just two pathetic, greedy people who had gotten caught. When they finally ran ou

We didn’t let them go home to change. We just led them out the back door of the building and into a black car that was waiting for us. Jack and Lily didn’t resist. They were too shocked, too scared, to do anything but obey. The drive took an hour. We left the city behind and drove into the rolling green hills of Tuscany. Jack and Lily sat in the back seat, staring out the windows in silence. I could see the confusion and fear growing on their faces as we drove further and further away from town. Finally, the car turned down a long, winding driveway lined with cypress trees. At the end of the driveway, a massive stone villa came into view. It was surrounded by acres of gardens, with a swimming pool and a tennis court and a stable full of horses. A dozen security guards stood at the gates, saluting as we drove through.Jack and Lily’s mouths fell open. They stared at the villa, their eyes wide with disbelief.“Where are we?” Lily whispered, her voice trembling.“You don’t need to k

The lobby was packed when I arrived at nine o’clock sharp. Reporters crowded the front, their cameras flashing constantly. Businessmen in expensive suits stood around drinking champagne, chatting loudly. Jack and Lily were at the center of it all, glowing with pride. Lily was wearing a red dress that cost more than most people make in a year. She bought it with my money, of course. Jack was shaking hands and slapping backs, acting like he owned the world.Monica was standing by the door, checking names off a list. When she saw me, her face twisted into a sneer. “What are you doing here? You were fired! Get out before I call security!”I didn’t even look at her. I just kept walking. Tom stepped forward and gently pushed her aside. She stumbled backward, letting out a shriek of outrage. The room went quiet. Every head turned toward me.Jack’s smile froze on his face. Lily’s eyes widened with shock.“Ella! What are you doing here?” Jack said, his voice tight. “I told you to stay home

I didn’t move a muscle. I didn’t even blink. When the sound finally died away, the hall was so quiet I could hear Jack’s breath hitch.I knew exactly who was calling. It was Lily. She thought she was calling the number that belonged to Luna. Luna was actually my family’s most trusted personal assistant, who had spent three years repeating my words verbatim to Jack over the phone. Three days ago, when Tom first told me Lily had touched my parents, I had called Luna and told her to stop all contact with Jack immediately. I took over her phone number myself. Every call, every message from that point on would come directly from me.I had given them enough rope. I had let them play their little game. But when they moved my parents from their suite, when they left me stranded at the hospital with a baby on the way, they crossed the line that even the kindest Bellandi would never forgive.Without a word, I turned on my heel and walked toward the elevator. Tom fell into step silently besid

Early the next morning, before we arrived, Tom had already informed me that Jack and Lily had fired all the senior employees I had personally promoted over the years.I instructed Tom to give each of the dismissed employees a generous severance package and tell them I would personally invite them back to the company. When we arrived at the corporate headquarters, an all-staff meeting was underway in the main conference hall. Lily stood confidently on the stage, holding a projector remote. A stream of my personal spending records flashed across the large screen. “Take a good look, everyone!” Lily’s voice trembled with feigned grief and indignation. “This is Ella Hale! While Jack exhausts himself working day and night to sustain this company, she idles at home, spending money without restraint. A single dress costs thousands of euros; a bottle of perfume is worth a small fortune...”“At this rate, the company will eventually be drained dry by her reckless extravagance! I froze her car
