Chapter 3

Author: Sorhay
“Ms. Mancini, your leg!” A server exclaimed.

It wasn’t until then that Vincent noticed that my leg was bleeding.

As his eyes widened in shock, he released Sophia and drew close. “How did that happen?”

Pushing myself off the ground, I straightened my back.

I met his anxious gaze.

My lips curled slightly.

I had to wonder how many pieces Vincent’s heart had been carved into.

In each piece, how much of it was true?

“All the best with the engagement,” I uttered with composure.

Vincent stared at me, hard and long, before loosening his collar in frustration.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Evelyn.”

Vincent shifted his gaze to Sophia, who was crying her eyes out in distress.

He snapped at the people nearby, “Escort Ms. Bilotti back! Get her a doctor!”

Vincent then turned his attention back to me. “Come with me.”

“It’s just a minor injury. There’s no need to trouble you.”

“Evelyn! Stop being so stubborn!” He raised his voice.

I was taken to a lounge room on the floor above.

“Stay put for the time being. Don’t wander around or start any drama.” He slapped a quick band-aid on my wound before turning away.

Silence fell over the room.

I sauntered to the window and watched his car drive away with Sophia inside.

It was just a superficial wound.

‘Enjoy your last moments of peace, Vincent.

‘I will be sending you an engagement gift that you’ll never forget for the rest of your life.’

The media gathered at the pier where a super yacht was anchored.

A red carpet was rolled out from the shore right up onto the deck of the Pearl.

No one spared a second glance at the cleaner I was disguised as.

Pushing the cleaning cart, I brushed past Vincent.

The delicate trim of his engagement attire grazed my cart as we crossed paths.

His face beamed with pride.

Next to him, Sophia looked dazzling in her white gown.

Before boarding the yacht, Vincent murmured to his men, “Secure all entries and exits. Don’t just let anybody come through.”

“Understood, Don Colleo.”

Little did Vincent know, the Pearl would become the end of his ambition.

We would never meet again.

The pier erupted in clamor as champagne-colored bubbles rose into the air.

I backed into the utility room and locked the door behind me.

That was when I turned on my microcomputer.

Without a doubt in my mind, I pressed the button to engage execution.

A command was issued.

A stream of data burst through to the agencies’ databases.

On deck, the ceremony had reached the part where the couple raised their glasses.

Every device on board blew up with breaking news alerts.

The commotion escalated fast.

“Don Colleo! The ledgers… the deals… They are all leaked to the public. The media and the cops…” A pale-faced subordinate rushed to Vincent.

The piercing wail of police sirens blared from the pier, growing louder by the second.

The noise tore through the celebratory music and chatter.

Standing on the platform, Sophia was horrified, staring at her mobile screen.

Vincent clenched his fists, veins on the back of his hands bulging.

He hissed through clenched teeth furiously, “Where did the leak come from?”

On the opposite end of the deck, Gray’s operative articulated the well-rehearsed response, “It’s Evelyn.”

Color drained from Vincent’s face.

The entire city was engulfed in the storm of the sudden scandal.

The flashing police lights bounced off the waters, casting the sea in an unsettling glow.

My mind and body were overcome with a sense of detachment and fatigue when I hit the final key and watched everything unfold.

It felt like a part of me was taken away when I sent out the evidence.

I figured it was the lingering obsession I had carried with me in those seven years.

With a leap, I dove from the yacht’s eighteenth story.

Faint, frantic cries echoed from somewhere.

I slowly shut my eyes.

The sirens hit like a blast of ice, extinguishing the final flicker of frenzy.Sophia stiffened and looked at the flashing lights in a daze. Vincent snapped his head around, color draining from his face. He stared at the approaching vehicles before turning back to me. Vincent’s eyes were filled with disbelief. Several uniformed officers moved swiftly onto the helipad. “Mr. Colleo, Ms. Bilotti, based on the report and the evidence gathered, you are hereby summoned for questioning on suspicion of multiple serious offenses. Please cooperate with the investigation.”Pulling herself together, Sophia backed away in fear and dropped the knife. Vincent took another long, hard look at me, the complexity in his gaze eventually fading into dead, lifeless gray. Standing on the helicopter stairs, I felt nothing. “Let’s go,” I slipped into the cabin and spoke calmly. The cabin door closed behind me, and silence fell.Janna’s voice reflected nothing new. “Ms. Mancini, initial feed

“That’s impossible! It can’t be!” Vincent screamed and pushed Janna out of the way. He ran madly after my receding figure, though I was already far ahead.Vincent sprinted forward desperately. With the estate’s security alarm going off, the security personnel in the dark jumped out to stop him. I approached the helipad where the chopper was running. The propellers whipped up a huge blast of air. Vincent raced toward me in anguish. Oblivious to the gravel hitting him, he dropped to his knees and stared intently at me. “Don’t go! “Evelyn! Evelyn! I’ll make you fall in love with me again! “Wait for me! Hear me out!” Unbeknownst to him, the moment I executed the final command of Operation Sweeper, all of Evelyn’s emotions, be it love or hatred, had already been released, laid bare, judged, and erased to nothing, along with the evidence.“I was wrong, Evelyn. I don’t know what came over me then. Can you give me another chance?” His voice was hoarse. He pleaded, “I’ll beg

I headed out of the estate, only to run into Sophia, who looked rather disheveled at the door. She charged toward me, her arm up in the air as piles of photos scattered across the floor. “Why are you still holding these pictures close to you, Vincent? Didn’t you say that I was your one and only?” Of the many flying photos, one landed right in front of me. The photo was grainy and distinct. In a busy fish market, I wore a cheap T-shirt, my face slicked with sweat. I smiled straight at the camera while holding a freshly gutted fish. The young man with his arm around my shoulders, striking a defiant gesture at the camera, was Vincent. In the photo, his eyes held pure, street-born confidence. The Evelyn in the picture was vivid, alive, and her eyes full of life. However, that person was not me. More accurately, she was just a role I once played. “Evelyn.” Vincent’s voice cracked. “I never married Sophia,” he said urgently while grabbing my arm.“I know that you have

We stared into each other’s eyes while standing several feet apart. The frustration and violence in Vincent’s eyes were replaced by a peculiar thrill. Raising his brow, Vincent carried himself offhandedly as if everything was under his control. We started walking toward each other, and the distance between us was rapidly closing. At last, we stopped just a step away from each other. Dipping his chin, Vincent looked at me. “Tsk. Here you are anyway.” I took a quick glance at him before heading toward the back alley next to the bar. Without a doubt, Janna was near. Sure enough, Janna stood by a Bentley. As I showed up, she gave a nod. “Ms. Mancini.” “What’s the word on the situation?” I opened the car door and stepped inside, my tone flat. “Gray has been expecting you,” Janna slipped into the driver’s seat. She started the car. “Following your instructions, the last set of documents involving Vincent’s offshore accounts and several critical cover operatives has been

Once Janna made sure the penthouse suite was secure inside out, she asked, “Should I beef up security, Ms. Mancini? Vincent—” “That won’t be necessary. You’re dismissed.” I cut her off. Though Janna clearly had something on her mind, she excused herself respectfully. “I’m just be next door if you need me.” The dazzling cityscape at night stretched outside the window. Something in the air was off. I closed my eyes. The presence drew close. Soon enough, the familiar scent of tobacco and danger was right in my face. Vincent’s face hovered inches from mine. He locked gazes with me, his eyes bloodshot and his breathing heavy. “Why did you pretend not to know me?” His voice was barely a murmur. His tone shook with emotion. “Why didn’t you reach out? Do you have any idea the lengths I went through to find you?” I looked at him with composure, not even alerting my security. “I don’t know you.” My response was identical to one I had given at the event hall. The frustra

Janna positioned herself in front of me. Vincent stopped a few steps away, his voice raspy. “Evelyn.” Those familiar with the history exchanged glances. Taking my time, I stepped out from behind Janna and met Vincent’s gaze. Under the spotlight, I was flawless in my haute couture gown and impeccable makeup. Next to the man with obsessive eyes and the lingering stench of incarceration, we looked like we came from two different worlds.“Sir, do I know you?” I spoke, my voice distant. Vincent’s eyes widened, and his muscles along his jawline tensed. He stared into my eyes as if trying to bore into the depths of my soul. Vincent reached his hand out toward me. However, the same Sophia, who faltered to the side, pounced and held onto Vincent’s arm. “Honey! She hit me! She nearly killed me!” Sophia pointed right at me in tears as if the world had done her wrong. Vincent froze before taking a brief look at Sophia with downcast eyes. Before she knew it, Vincent flung S
