Chapter 5

Autor: Sundream
My long silence stirred Rossi's suspicion.

The pressure coming off him thickened layer by layer until the air itself was suffocating.

Those deep-set eyes locked onto me, weighing, probing.

"Or have you been faking it from the very start, this whole obedient act? Hmm?"

My heartbeat picked up on its own, slamming painfully against my ribs.

"Whatever result you want, I'm willing to accept it."

I answered softly, with the same old meekness.

He stared at me in silence.

I held my breath, strangling the instinct to tremble, terrified that one crack would bring everything down.

At last, he looked away, his voice relaxing into a faintly teasing note.

"Just a joke." His voice was light. "No one is interested in a woman carrying another man's child."

His eyes dropped to my belly.

"I hope everything you've said is true.

"You're coming with me to tomorrow's Easter celebration. I'll make a public donation at the church. You know what your job is."

With that he turned to leave, pausing at the door to coldly instruct the servants that without his permission, I was not to take a single step out of my bedroom.

Early the next morning, I carefully padded my belly into a visible but gentle curve. At a glance, I looked like a woman just beginning to show.

As we set out, Rossi's gaze landed on the swell of my belly, and a flicker of satisfaction crossed his eyes.

I knew exactly what he was thinking.

At this grand public celebration, my only role was to play his visibly pregnant, devoted girlfriend: stand at his side, draw every eye, and shield Bianca and his unborn heir from any threat waiting in the wings.

The moment we arrived at the church, I spotted Marco Solano.

As the Family's underboss, Solano was expected to attend public functions meant to bolster its reputation.

Our eyes met, and we gave each other the slightest nod.

But even that brief exchange displeased Rossi.

He gave a low cough that carried a veiled warning.

I withdrew my gaze at once and meekly slid my hand around his arm.

The celebration ran its course without a ripple.

Soon, the ceremony reached its final stage: the public donation.

The Family had already donated twelve thousand dollars to the church in private to secure its continued protection.

This public donation was pure theater, a show staged for outsiders to win hearts.

Rossi stood beside the priest, shaking hands for the cameras, every inch the gentleman entrepreneur.

The instant the flashbulbs went off, the church's heavy doors burst open.

A team of FBI agents in tactical jackets poured in.

"Mr. Rossi, you're under arrest on fifteen federal felony counts, including bribery of public officials, extortion, and international smuggling. Come with us. Now."

The church erupted.

Every eye snapped to Rossi.

And Rossi's gaze went first to Solano, standing beside the agents. A contemptuous smile curled his lip.

"I'm a law-abiding citizen. On what grounds am I supposed to answer your baseless accusations?"

He straightened his collar, taking his time, not a trace of panic in him.

I knew where his confidence came from.

He was suspicious by nature. He relied on Solano, but he had never truly trusted him.

Whatever evidence had passed through Solano's hands was nowhere near enough to shake his foundations, let alone convict him.

The FBI agents traded glances, hesitating.

Into that standoff, I slowly rose from my seat.

I stepped out of the crowd. Under the stunned gaze of the entire church, I spoke clearly.

"And what if the accusation is mine?"

The sting of disinfectant hit me as I pushed open the door to the hospital room, and I saw Rossi in the bed at once. His face was paper-white, his lips bloodless, his breathing so faint his chest barely moved. The moment he saw me, his dull, dying eyes flared with a weak light. He strained to lift his hand, and it fell back limp. Hoarse, broken sounds scraped out of his throat as he rushed to explain."I... Bianca deceived me."She told me that giving you to Luca was only a test of your loyalty. She said the arrangement was temporary. That once the alliance between the two families was stable, I could swap someone in for you and bring you home safe."Of all of them, he always seemed the most easygoing, the most respectable. I had no idea what he..."I stood quietly at the bedside, listening to his desperate excuse as he lay dying, and felt nothing at all.I knew perfectly well he must have seen the recent reports about Luca.I bent down and leaned close to Rossi's ear."You don't need

In front of the entire neighborhood, Vincent Galati hurled fragments recovered from the blast site and reports tracking Rossi's operatives against the estate gate."Look at it, all of you! This is proof of what Rossi did! The man is deranged! He buried a ton of high-grade TNT under a main city road for a terrorist assassination!"My brother Galati was ambushed on the road and blown apart! Not even his remains were left to us! Savagery like this cannot be forgiven, not by God or man!"He jabbed a finger at the estate gate, murderous intent plain in his eyes."Today, I, Vincent Galati, swear before all of you: the Galati family and Rossi are enemies to the death. There will be no truce and no end!"We will call in every connection we have and pay any price to make Rossi answer for Galati's death with his own life!"Reporters on the scene caught the entire confrontation on camera, and by that afternoon the story topped the local headlines.News that mafia leaders had used high explosives

All his life, Rossi had been suspicious and meticulous, calculating every move. The one exception, the one person he gave his whole heart to, was Bianca. But his beloved Bianca had never loved him. Even the child wasn't his.Rossi had always prided himself on controlling everyone around him. When he learned that he had been living inside someone else's lie all along, hatred finally swept away the last of his reason. In an instant, all his love for Bianca twisted into boundless hatred for Galati. He mobilized the last hidden forces he had left from inside prison and, heedless of everything, had a full ton of TNT buried along the route Galati traveled every day. When his closest lieutenant learned that Rossi meant to bomb Galati, he tried desperately to stop him."Don Rossi, you can't do this! A high-explosive attack on a public road is a major federal offense. We can't erase the evidence in time. We still have a way out now, but once we do this, there will be no coming back!"But by the

Rossi's gaze wavered. The color drained from his face, then surged back."She can feel the Family shaking. She knows you can't protect her anymore. Afraid I'd make her answer for what she'd done, she came begging me to spare a place for her in the new order."I took out my phone, pulled up the recording I had saved, and pressed play. The familiar female voice came through the speaker."I never loved Rossi. The man I truly love has always been Dominic Galati. The truth is, I came back to the States long ago. I've been at Galati's side ever since. He kept my return quiet for me."Before long I was carrying his child. Then a revolt broke out inside his family, and he couldn't protect me anymore. So I remembered how Rossi used to be obsessed with me..."Before the recording finished, Rossi snatched up the phone and hurled it to the floor. His eyes were bloodshot, but he still clenched his teeth and refused to bend."I know your little tricks better than anyone. I'm not falling for this."H

The fluorescent lights of the prison visiting room were a harsh, deathly white.Rossi sat across from me. A few days had weathered him. Stubble shadowed his jaw, and a new gauntness sat around his eyes, but none of it could blunt the sharpness in his gaze.He stared at me hard, a fanatical smile tilting his mouth."And here I never knew how much you were capable of hiding."I've had it checked. You were never pregnant at all. I should have seen it long ago. You're an untamed little leopard who's been playing the docile fool right in front of me."I kept my eyes lowered and said nothing. At my silence, Rossi leaned forward, the excitement in his eyes burning hotter."Good. Very good. When I get out, a fight with someone as ruthless as you will finally be worth having."I finally raised my eyes, my voice flat."There's something I think you should know."I slowly drew a yellowed medical certificate from my pocket, its corners worn soft.It was a hospital report issued years earlier, afte

At that, several other elders chimed in, pressing for me to leave.Disdainful looks converged on me from every direction, and the room locked into a standoff.I did not panic or argue. I simply raised one hand and set a neatly bound stack of ledgers on the long table. The pages were packed with years of dock revenue, smuggling ledgers, business dividends, and income and expenses from secret operations. Every entry could be traced and verified. My expression stayed calm, and I let each word fall with certainty."You elders speak of this Family empire as if rules built it. Yet through more than half of its hardest years, I balanced the books night after night, kept its internal affairs in order, and bled beside Rossi to keep it alive."Rossi trusts no one. For many of the hidden businesses and back channels, I'm the only person who understands the entire operation."I swept my gaze slowly across the room, neither humble nor defiant."Now the Don is behind bars and the Family is shaking i
