"Don't worry, I'll take care of things," I told Marco, my voice steadier than I felt.

The weight of everything pressed down on my shoulders. Rosa's execution. The warehouse attack. The photo of Aria.

All of it led back to one man.

Vanessa came back to the room with Aria, Aria balanced on her hip. My daughter was babbling happily, completely unaware of the storm brewing around us.

"What happened?" Vanessa asked, her dark eyes searching my face.

"Nothing I can't handle."

The lie came easily. Too easily.

I bent down and kissed Aria's cheek, and she laughed, clapping her tiny hands together. The sound was pure joy, innocent and untainted by the violence that surrounded our world.

*At least something good remains.*

"I need to make some calls," I said, straightening up. "Can you keep her occupied for a while?"

"Of course."

Vanessa's voice was soft, concerned. She reached out like she wanted to touch my arm, then pulled back.

The almost-touch burned more than contact w

The door was slightly ajar, and I could hear everything. "—The Morettis are getting too close," a voice I didn't recognize was saying. "They're asking questions. Digging into things that should stay buried." "Let them dig," Alessandro's voice, cold and dangerous. "They'll find nothing." "What about the girl?" My blood turned to ice. "What about her?" "She's a liability. She knows too much." "She knows nothing." "Are you sure about that?" There was a pause. A long, terrible pause. "I'm sure." But I could hear the doubt in his voice. The uncertainty. They were talking about me. "The De Luca business is expanding," another voice said. "We need to secure the eastern territories before anyone else makes a move." "Then we make our move first." Alessandro's words were like ice. "What about the competition?" "What about them?" I pressed my hand to my mouth, trying to process what I was hearing. They were talking about business. Dangerous business. The kin

Pain shot through my body as I shifted in the massive bed. Everything ached. Every muscle. Every nerve. Every inch of skin that Alessandro had touched with his hands and mouth. The soreness was a reminder of what we'd done. What I'd let happen. What I'd wanted to happen. My heart hammered against my ribs as the memories flooded back. The way he'd looked at me by the pool. The way he'd kissed me was like he was drowning. The way he'd made me feel things I'd never felt before. The way he'd claimed me. Body and soul. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the images. But they were burned into my memory. The way his hands had felt on my skin. The way he'd whispered my name like a prayer. The way he'd made me forget everything except him. Everything except us. Alessandro's arm was still wrapped around my waist, holding me against his chest. His breathing was deep and even, lost in sleep. He looked younger like this. Peaceful. The hard lines of his face softened,

"Stop."The word hung between us like a blade. But I couldn't stop. Not when she was looking at me like that. Not when her body was arching beneath mine, begging for what her mouth was trying to deny.I grabbed her wrists, pinning them above her head."Don't worry," I whispered against her lips. "You won't regret this."She trembled beneath me, her breath coming in short gasps. I could feel her pulse hammering against my thumb where I held her wrists."Alessandro, we can't—"I silenced her with a kiss. Deep. Demanding. Claiming. Her protests died in her throat as she melted into me. This was what I'd been craving for weeks. This surrender. This fire between us threatened to consume everything in its path. She was mine. She'd always been mine.Even when she was running from me, even when she was lying to me, even when she was hiding whatever secrets were eating her alive.Mine.---I kissed her like I was drowning and she was air. Like I was starving and she was sustenance. Like I was

One week.Seven days since Aria's fever broke and she smiled at me like nothing had ever been wrong.Seven days of Alessandro watching me with those dark eyes that seemed to see straight through my soul.Seven days of pretending I wasn't drowning in feelings I had no right to have. The tension between us was suffocating. Every accidental touch sent electricity through my veins. Every shared glance across the dinner table made my heart race. Every time he said my name, I felt like I was coming apart at the seams. He'd meant what he said in the hospital. About wanting a family. About not caring what I was hiding. But he didn't know the truth. And when he found out, his beautiful promises would turn to ash.---Aria was finally sleeping peacefully in her crib, her fever long gone but my protective instincts were still on high alert. I'd been checking on her every hour, unable to shake the memory of how small and fragile she'd looked in that hospital bed.The penthouse felt too quiet. Too

As if sensing the tension, Aria started fussing. Vanessa immediately shifted into caretaker mode, picking her up and soothing her with soft words. "It's okay, baby. Mama's here." She froze as soon as the words left her mouth. "I didn't mean—" "You did mean it." "I'm not her mother." "In every way that matters, you are." Tears filled her eyes. "Don't say that." "Why not? It's true." "It's not true." "She loves you. You love her. You take care of her. You protect her. What else is there?" "Biology." "Biology doesn't make a mother. Love does." "Alessandro." "Love makes a family, Vanessa. And we're already a family." "We're not—" "We are. Whether you want to admit it or not." She looked down at Aria, settling back to sleep in her arms. "This is dangerous." "What is?" "Thinking like this. Feeling like this." "Why?" "Because it's not real." "It feels real to me." "It can't be real." "Why not?" "Because I'm not who you think I am." "I don't care who you were. I

The penthouse felt different when we returned from the hospital. Quieter. More fragile. Like everything could shatter if I moved too fast. Vanessa carried Aria straight to the nursery, her movements careful and protective. I followed, watching how she checked and double-checked everything – the temperature, the baby monitor, the locks on the windows. "She's safe now," I said quietly. "I know." But her hands were still shaking. "Vanessa." "I should make her some food. Something light. The doctor said—" "I'll help." She paused, looking at me with those dark eyes that had haunted my dreams. "You don't have to." "I want to." --- The kitchen felt intimate with just the two of us working side by side. Vanessa moved with practiced efficiency, warming milk and preparing soft foods while I watched her every gesture. The way she tested the temperature on her wrist. The way she hummed softly while she worked. The way she'd broken down completely when Aria got sick. I'd never see
