Chapter 4

Author: Redleaves
Orlando and Romina's engagement party was a lavish affair.

At the party, Romina gave a speech thanking the Bennetts for twenty years of love and care.

She wept with emotion, like she was accepting an award onstage.

The guests nodded their approval. "Adopted, but truly closer than blood."

Someone glanced at me and murmured:

"Heard that one's the biological daughter? Looks pretty ordinary to me."

"Raised by poor folks, after all. No breeding in her."

Orlando held Romina close, tenderly wiping away her tears.

I thought I'd let it all go.

But seeing it play out in front of me, my chest still ached, faint and dull.

The voices around me blurred, like I was hearing them through glass.

I couldn't watch anymore. I got up to go back to my room.

The moment I pushed the door open, I stopped cold.

The room had been torn apart, every drawer hanging open.

I lunged for the nightstand.

The jade bracelet my adoptive mother left me was gone.

I rushed back to the ballroom.

In the crowd, Romina was showing off the bracelet on her wrist. "Pretty, isn't it? My sister let me borrow it."

I walked over, voice trembling. "Give it back."

Romina startled like I'd frightened her, her knees buckling, and the whole of her went down.

The bracelet on her wrist struck the floor hard.

Crack.

It split into pieces.

Romina covered her mouth, face white. "Sister... I, I didn't mean to..."

The guests whispered, pointing at me like I was the punchline of a joke.

Orlando came over.

First thing he did was gently help Romina up. Then he nudged the shattered pieces aside with the toe of his shoe.

"It's just a bracelet. Name your price."

My eyes burned. I crouched down and gathered the pieces one by one.

A shard sliced my finger. The blood that welled up felt like it was coming straight from my heart.

"My adoptive mother left me this."

My voice shook beyond my control. "It's the last thing she gave me before she died."

Orlando pressed his lips together.

He knew what she meant to me.

Three years ago, when she passed, I nearly fell apart. He was the one who stayed with me through that darkness.

But Romina only cried harder.

Orlando drew her into his arms and soothed her softly. "Don't cry. It hurts me to see it. There, now."

My mother walked up. "Ophelia, you're the one who scared Romina. Stop causing scenes."

My father spoke too. "It's just a bracelet, and a cheap-looking one at that. I'll buy you ten of them."

I found a bag and carefully tucked the broken pieces inside.

This wasn't something money could fix anymore.

I walked up to Romina, raised my hand, and slapped her across the face.

Smack!

The whole room fell dead silent.

Orlando was the first to react. He swung his hand up.

Smack!

He slapped me back.

My cheek burned, and the taste of rust filled my mouth.

I turned my head back to look at him. His face had the cruelty of a circling vulture.

"Ophelia. You're not fit to insult my Donna."

[oh my god! the male lead went way too far! that was the villainess's late mother's keepsake!]

[the lead's an actual animal! he knew exactly how much that bracelet meant!]

[no way! I'm with the villainess on this one! I'm forming an Avengers team with her!]

I wiped the corner of my mouth and looked at the bright red on my fingertip.

I rubbed it hard between my fingers until the blood was gone, then said coldly:

"Cut the talk. Pay up. Twenty-five million."

Then I turned to the so-called biological parents. "I don't want this family."

With that, I walked out of the ballroom.

Behind me, my mother's voice followed. "Let her go! Let's see how far she gets!"

Outside, I flagged a cab and went straight to the hospital.

My phone buzzed.

Orlando had sent the money. Twenty-five million, with a note: I'm sorry.

I didn't reply. I had no intention of forgiving him.

At the hospital, the doctor asked me carefully, "Are you sure? If you're sure, sign here."

I signed.

When it was over, I went straight to the airport, my face pale.

I was going to find Damian.

In the departure lounge, a text came in from Orlando.

"Effie, I want to sit down and talk. Calmly."

My stomach turned.

Was he serious? Now he wants to call me "Effie"?

The announcement came over the speakers. "Now boarding the flight to San Francisco..."

I sent Orlando one last reply.

"Go fuck yourself."

I blocked him and stood up.

Then I walked to the gate without looking back.

Three months later, I got a call from my father, of all people. He danced around it for ages, until I'd had enough and was about to hang up. Only then did he stammer out what he wanted."Effie, can you help your father out? Lend me some working capital?"He sighed and laid it all out.It turned out that over the past year and more, the Hales and the Bennetts had been hammered relentlessly by the other families. The mafia world respects only strength. The two men who'd been played by Romina had no business being Dons, no business holding the territory their men had bled for.Orlando was like an old dog that had been gelded, drained of all fight, doing nothing but drinking in front of my photo all day.Hale territory had mostly been carved up already. The Bennetts weren't faring any better. The family was in disarray now, and my father badly needed capital to keep things afloat and hold the last of his ground.I answered calmly. "A loan? Sure. What's the collateral? And the interest rate

Orlando stood stiffly in the crowd.A year apart, and he'd thinned out a great deal.He wore a suit I'd given him once. It hung off him now.His hair was still combed neatly, but half of it had gone gray. When I came down off the stage, he sidled up to me."Effie, congratulations."I smiled and nodded. "Thank you."Seeing him again, there wasn't a single ripple left in me.If Orlando was a mountain, then I was the wind, free.I'd long since crossed over him."Effie, this whole year... I've been waiting for you... I said I'd wait forever..."He hung his head, voice hoarse, his feet shifting like they couldn't find solid ground. Then something occurred to him, and he pulled a special box from inside his coat.It was made of crystal. The lower compartment held an old photo of me.The upper one held a ring.I raised an eyebrow. It was the seven-carat pink diamond, the one he'd bought and once promised me."Now that your company's gone public, you must be happy. The anger's probably mostly

Damian had been under a lot of pressure lately.Once the project officially launched, he ran nonstop, like a machine.A startup was a bottomless pit. The forty million I put in burned through fast. The company was performing well, and the user numbers were climbing quickly. But we needed more capital.Damian decided to bring in another round of investment. For it, he dressed himself up with great care."How do I look?" he asked nervously, knotting his tie.I looked him over with a smile. He had on a well-cut suit that showed off his lean, athletic build, broad at the shoulders and narrow at the waist. His blond hair was combed back without a strand out of place, his fair skin glowing like a diamond. It was true. Clean him up a little, and he was better looking than anyone.[is this even the side guy? I almost didn't recognize him!][tech nerd? this is a full-on finance heartthrob!]He turned a circle in front of me. "Well? Give me your honest take, the investors are coming any minute!"

[Orlando's Perspective]Orlando pulled the wedding ring off his finger and slid it across the table to Romina."Romina, the engagement's off."Romina went white, asking in disbelief, "Orlando, do you know what you're saying?""I do." Orlando raised his voice. "The engagement is off.""Have you lost your mind? Ophelia's gone! And she's never coming back!"Romina shot to her feet and screamed, hysterical, "You're calling it off for her?"Orlando dragged a hand down his face, his voice heavy with exhaustion."Romina, you know exactly what you've done.""All that evidence in your hands, you dug it up yourself, didn't you?"Romina's expression flickered.Of course she knew. The engagement she'd "reluctantly" accepted. The coffee she'd "accidentally" spilled. The ring she'd "hidden." The bracelet she'd "broken."Too many. Far too many to count.Romina's eyes darted, and she dug in stubbornly."I have no idea what you're talking about! Orlando, our engagement isn't a game! This is about two g

Late at night, my phone suddenly rang.An unknown number.I hesitated, then picked up."Hello?""Effie?" It was my mother's voice, thick with tears. "Effie, it's Mom..."I was silent for a few seconds. "Mrs. Bennett. Is there something you need? Otherwise I'd like to rest.""Effie, Mom is so sorry... Mom knows everything now... you lost the baby, all alone..."I frowned and asked calmly, "How do you know that?""Orlando told us. He confessed everything. We only just learned the truth..."She was sobbing, struggling to breathe."We wronged you. Please come home, won't you? I'll make it up to you..."I looked at the moon outside the window, then at Damian, fast asleep.I chose to forgive. Not to forgive my mother. To forgive myself.I stopped blaming the girl I used to be for the mistakes she made.I was just a girl back then, standing lost in the fog like anyone else."Mrs. Bennett, I don't need anything made up to me. And I'm not coming back.""Effie...""That's all. I'm hanging up now

The next day, Orlando went on standing downstairs, playing the loyal knight.Too bad I wasn't his princess.I ignored him.He could stand down there until he turned into a museum exhibit for all I cared. Before long Damian showed up. He looked at Orlando down below and asked, frowning:"Who's that guy?"Damian had left New York five years ago. He didn't know Orlando, and I'd never mentioned him.I thought it over, then made Damian a cup of hot tea."Want to hear a story?"Damian looked at me and nodded, a little tense.I told him everything about me and Orlando. He listened quietly, sipping his tea now and then."There. Story's over. Anything you want to ask?"I asked it lightly, but my eyes were fixed nervously on the tea in the cup.I was a little afraid of the answer I might hear next."Just one question."I lifted my eyes to him.He swallowed, blinking nervously, his words coming out in a stammer:"You... you're not... you're not going back with him, are you?"Then he looked away a
