Chapter 4

مؤلف: Chelsea
Viola ducked behind him at once.

"Derek, she just tried to kill me. It was terrifying.

"All I did was tell her about Mia, and she came at me like a maniac."

Derek looked at me, his eyes ice-cold.

"Sylvia, you really never change."

He flung me aside. I slammed into the iron door behind me, tearing open the old wound in my abdomen. Pain doubled me over.

I opened my mouth, but I couldn't make a sound.

Derek had already turned to leave, but when I still hadn't gotten up after a long time, he stopped.

Viola grabbed his sleeve right away, her eyes red.

"If she's willing to come after me now, what if she comes after you next?"

The hesitation vanished from Derek's face. Disgust took its place.

He bent down, grabbed my arm, and hauled me off the ground.

"Apologize to her."

I sagged in his grip. I didn't even have the strength to stand up straight.

But when I heard that, I began to laugh through my tears.

Derek frowned.

"What's so funny?"

I looked up at him. My vision was already blurry, but I kept my chin up and said, "Derek, Mia's dead.

"You don't have anything left to threaten me with."

His grip tightened. Sweat beaded on my forehead from the pain, but I went on, "Don't you hate me? Then kill me. Avenge your father."

Derek stared hard at me.

"You want to die?

"Sylvia, you owe the Shelby family so many lives, and you think you can just say you want to die and walk away clean?"

I looked at him. I'd lost every reason to want to live.

"Then what else do you want? For me to kneel? To beg?"

I gave a small shake of my head.

"I won't. You never believe a word I say. From now on, even if I'm dying right in front of you, I won't call your name again."

Derek's expression hardened. He grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him.

"You think I can't do anything to you anymore?"

I met his eyes quietly.

"You know I'm terrified of snakes. But what scares me most now is you coming near me.

"Derek, you make me sicker than those snakes do."

The air seemed to freeze.

Derek stared at me for a few seconds. Then his lips curved into a cold, frightening smile.

"Fine. If you hate me that much, I'll give you what you want."

He turned to his guards and ordered, "Take her to the fight club."

They dragged me all the way to the Shelby family's underground fight club.

The night's fights were in full swing, and gamblers around the ring were screaming.

Someone recognized me and whistled.

"Ms. Loren's back? Here to be a punching bag again?"

Derek ignored them.

He led me straight past the ring to the training cage at the very back.

A man was standing there.

A scar cut across his face. He looked absolutely vicious.

The heavy bag at his feet had been battered out of shape. Everyone at the club knew who he was.

It was Kane Mercer, the most ruthless fighter at the North Side underground fight club.

Word was he never held back in the ring. He'd once broken a traitor's ribs one by one.

Derek shoved me down at his feet.

"She's yours. If you kill her, dump her somewhere far away."

With that, he and his men turned and left.

The iron door clanged shut, leaving just Kane and me in the training room.

I couldn't hold on any longer. Blood surged into my throat, and I coughed up mouthful after mouthful onto the floor.

Kane swore.

"Hey, don't die on me in here."

I couldn't make out what he was saying. On instinct, I grabbed the leg of his pants.

"If I die... put me with Mia..."

Before I could finish, I coughed up more blood.

Kane looked grim.

"Shut up. Save your last words for later."

I stared at him, dazed, as he bent down and scooped me up like I was a kitten.

In the arms of the most brutal fighter around, I felt surprisingly warm and safe.

I thought of Derek again. If I could start over, I'd wish for just one thing: never to meet you.

My thoughts wandered, and I slowly sank into his arms.

"Hey, troublemaker, don't you dare fall asleep!"

I could hear him breathing hard, telling me to stay awake, but my eyes kept getting heavier.

I was so tired...

Just let me sleep...

Three months later, the family's highest-ranking members waited in the hallway outside the private medical suite at the Shelby estate.

The first thing Vincent did when he woke was grip Derek's wrist and ask, "Where's Sylvia? Didn't you two get married?"

His memories stopped just before Derek and I were due to get married.

Derek was quiet for a second, then scoffed. "That traitor doesn't deserve to stand in front of you. She betrayed the family. She deserves to die!"

Vincent let out a long, regretful sigh. "She's not a traitor! She risked her life to come warn me. If she hadn't, I'd be dead!"

When the family's senior members heard the truth from Vincent himself, they all looked stunned.

They knew exactly how much I'd suffered during Vincent's years in a coma.

One of the elders looked at Derek, who was frozen in place, and asked carefully, "Derek, is she... still alive?"

Everyone turned to look at the young Don.

His eyes were bloodshot. He stood rooted to the spot in shock, muttering to himself, "That's impossible... You must be wrong. It can't be..."

Later, Vincent personally arranged my funeral.Mia was reburied next to me.There was no Shelby crest on my headstone.Kane and I had agreed on that before I died. While I was alive, that name had kept me trapped for ten years. After I died, I didn't want anything to do with it.Derek knelt at my grave for seven days.On the eighth day, he returned to the family and settled the score with Carlo. Not long after, officers from the Third Precinct on the east side found a woman's body on the shore. She'd drowned like Mia, but her death had been far more gruesome.According to the medical examiner, she'd been suspended upside down in shark-infested water while still alive. The sharks had nearly devoured her before she drowned, and her remains were dumped afterward. The dead woman was Viola. One by one, everyone who'd tormented me paid the price. But none of that meant anything to me anymore.Kane refused all compensation from the Shelby family. He kept running the gym.Every night after clo

Derek drove me back to the gym himself.Kane was already waiting at the door. The car had barely stopped when he hurried over. His face still bore the marks of Derek's punches."Sylvie, did he hurt you?"I shook my head."No."Kane looked me over from head to toe again and again, his eyes reddening.I didn't want him to cry, so I tried to distract him. "I'm hungry," I said.Kane quickly wiped his face."What do you want to eat?""Spaghetti with meat sauce.""You got it."The apartment above the gym looked much as I'd left it, but there were plenty of small new touches.Flowers sat on the windowsill, a few photos hung on the wall, and a thick stack of handwritten pages rested on the desk.Kane looked a little embarrassed as he said, "While you were gone, I learned a bunch of new words."There aren't any underground fights at the gym anymore. Oh, and I can bake bread now."He kept talking, as if he could pretend I still had plenty of time as long as he didn't stop.Derek's car was parked

Another two weeks went by, and the treatment actually made me look a lot better. Some color had returned to my face, and I was eating more than before.Derek was thrilled by every sign of improvement.Whenever a doctor said I was doing well, he pressed them for answers. Was the treatment working? Was I getting better? He'd even had someone get my old room ready again. But when the follow-up report came back, all the doctors kept their heads down. Nobody dared say a word.Derek opened the report and stared at it for a long time."What does this mean?"The lead doctor had no choice but to explain."Don, the improvement in Ms. Loren's condition only reflects better nutrition and pain management."Her organ damage is still progressing, and the treatment isn't working anymore. At this rate..."The doctor paused. "She has a month at most."Derek threw the report across the room."That's impossible! She's gained weight! She finished her whole breakfast yesterday!"And you're telling me she's

When I woke up, I was back at the Shelby estate. The room was full of doctors. Derek sat by the bed, and the moment I opened my eyes, he leaned closer."Sylvie."I couldn't stand the sight of him."Get out."Derek's face tightened for a second, but he didn't lose his temper."I found the team that treated you before."The doctors say they can keep trying. If you cooperate, maybe..."I cut him off."Maybe what?"Maybe once I'm better, you can go back to punishing me?"Derek looked worse by the second.I looked at him and started listing everything he'd done to me, one thing at a time."Making me kneel and put Viola's shoes on for her."Throwing me back into the casino, then sending me to the fight club to get beaten for 12 hours a day."Or do you think all that wasn't enough, and you're getting ready to start over?""No."Derek's voice was tight. "Never again."A laugh escaped me."Then why are you trying so hard to save me? Don't tell me you can't stand the thought of me dying."Derek

Alarm flashed across Kane's face. He dug through the bag of medicine for my painkillers."Sylvie, hang on a little longer."But before he could give me the pills, Derek snatched them away."What is this?"Kane's face went dark."Give those back to her!""I asked you what this is!"Derek clutched the few loose pills, eyeing them with suspicion.Sweat was pouring down my face from the pain, and I didn't have the strength to argue with him."Derek... give them to me."He finally realized something was wrong when he saw that I was in too much pain to stand. He handed the pills to Nico and ordered someone to test them immediately.Kane pulled out another pill and held it to my lips.I leaned against him for a long time before the pain in my stomach finally eased a little.Derek stood there watching. His expression darkened as he watched Kane hold me and heard him call me "Sylvie" over and over. But this time, he didn't shove Kane away. The test results came back fast. Nico said quietly, "Do

As soon as Derek's stitches were removed, he left the hospital. He gathered every man he could and headed to the North Side.Private clinics, boxing gyms, off-the-books motels, black-market pharmacies. For seven straight days, he turned nearly every place where Kane had ever been seen upside down, but he found nothing. It was like Kane and I had vanished into thin air.Just as Derek was about to widen the search, he spotted Kane outside a private pharmacy. The man everyone at the fight club had feared just months earlier now wore a plain black jacket and carried a big bag of medicine."Stop!"Kane heard him and turned to walk the other way.Several guards quickly closed in. Derek rushed forward and grabbed Kane by the collar."Where's Sylvia?"Kane didn't say a word, so Derek punched him in the face."I asked you where she is!"Blood trickled from the corner of Kane's mouth. He wiped it away like it was nothing."Dead."Shock and rage twisted Derek's face. His next punch was even harde
